Ageia-Specimen Collector Training and Certification

As a Certified Tester for our company, you will have the day-to-day responsibility for not only conducting drug and alcohol screening tests, but also playing a critical role in supporting the drug free workplace program and enforcing policy. Your mannerism and professionalism in this exercise will be critical in treating individuals fairly and with respect. Keep the following points in mind at all times when carrying out duties for this program:  Privacy and confidentiality are extremely important. Regardless of when or why the testing is being done, the individual being tested will probably be feeling numerous emotions including; embarrassment, fear, intimidation, and even humiliation. Your job is to carry out the task in a private fashion without ever saying anything to the individual that would sound accusatory or that could be misinterpreted.

Never leave the subject being tested “out of sight” once testing has started (except when they are in the restroom). Make sure all required forms are completed promptly, accurately, and then filed according to policy. The Executive Director must always be made aware of testing being performed outside of an AGEIA facility.

Illustrated to the right are 2 sample tests; a positive result for marijuana and cocaine and a negative result for all tested drug categories. Make sure that you have a designated witness view and sign for all test results.

Ageia-Specimen Collector Training and Certification Communicating a positive test result can feel uncomfortable for the tester as well as the applicant. Remember, you are not here to discuss this individual’s possible drug use behavior. You are only performing a step in the screening process for hiring purposes. Just the facts. Your statement to the candidate should be as follows: “The results of this test indicate positive for (name the category). Is there a reason the results are indicating positive?” If their response is that they may have a past history of use or they just simply do not know why; respond that our company policy will not allow them to continue in the candidate selection process. Thank them for their interest in our company.

Ageia-Specimen Collector Training and Certification If their response is that they believe a prescribed medication they are taking might be affecting the test result or they are adamant that the results cannot be correct, explain that they may have a second test done at our contracted clinic, but they will have to pay for the test. Explain that if the results are negative they can continue to be considered for the position, but a negative test result is not a guarantee of employment. Let them know that the test must be conducted that same day and if they are selected for the position they will be reimbursed for the cost of the test. If the candidate wants to pursue further testing, provide them with the clinic information, collect the testing fee and complete the Clinic Authorization and Consent form. The original should be kept in your log and a copy should accompany the applicant being tested.
