odds ’n’ ends HONOLULU:

State and federal authorities plan to move a newborn Hawaiian monk seal away from congested Waikiki so it can remain a wild animal and won’t become accustomed to interacting with people. Officials will take the seal shortly after it is weaned to a remote, undisclosed part of Oahu island, David Schofield, the regional marine mammal response coordinator for the National Marine Fisheries Service, said Tuesday. Officials have moved newly weaned seals from other areas popular with people in the past, like Poipu on Kauai, Schofield said. The aim is to allow the seal to grow up with other seals instead of playing with and mimicking humans. There’s also a risk people may feed the young seals, even by accident. “We want the seal to learn to be a seal, not to be a pet,” Schofield said. Hawaiian monk seals are a critically endangered species. There are only 1,400 remaining in the wild. The seal’s mother gave birth in late June. It was the first seal born in Waikiki, one of the world’s most famous tourist beaches, since record-keeping began a few decades ago. (AP)

Southern California beachgoers have gotten up close and personal with a baby whale. A gray whale about 15 to 18 feet long cruised into Dana Point Harbor on Tuesday morning. It swam into a shallow children’s area called Baby Beach and circled a pier. Kayakers were able to get within a few feet of the animal, which at one point swam under paddleboarders. Capt Dave Anderson, who runs whale watching tours out of the harbor, says the whale appeared to be a skinny juvenile who was foraging in the mud. He says it’s probably the same whale that was spotted Monday farther south in a Carlsbad lagoon. (AP)

A 3-day-old baby deer is being sent to a wildlife reserve after somebody thought they were helping the fawn by removing it from a desert area in Arizona. Mike Demlong, Wildlife Education Program Manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, says a man found the fawn , thought it was abandoned and took it into a bar to see if anybody else wanted to take it home. The fawn ended up in the hands of Arizona officials, though. And now, because it was ripped from its mother and depends on humans for survival, it will never be able to go back into the wild. Demlong said nobody knew the man who took the baby deer, so they won’t be pursuing an investigation. (AP)
