The Bridge to Our Future

Mission Statement Beta Alpha Psi is a not-for-profit international honorary and service organization for accounting, finance and information systems students at AACSB- or EQUIS-accredited universities. Beta Alpha Psi provides opportunities for development of technical and professional skills to complement university education; participation in community service; and interaction among students, faculty and professionals.

The International Advisory Forum, Associates and Affiliates Program In 1974, Beta Alpha Psi organized the International Advisory Forum. The Forum consists of leaders from professional service firms, industry and government. The Forum members support and directly assist numerous projects and meetings to further the objectives of Beta Alpha Psi. Through the advice and assistance of the International Advisory Forum, Beta Alpha Psi instituted the Associates Program in 1981. Each member of the Associates Program provides financial support at a level consistent with the organization’s involvement in business education and employment of accounting, finance and information systems graduates. Members of the Associates Program are given equal recognition for each event or project supported by the Associates’ funds. The International Affiliates contribute their time as individual members of the International Advisory Forum and the support of the not-for-profit organizations they represent. President’s Letter Greetings to Students, Faculty Advisors, Board Members, and Advisory Forum Members, It has been an outstanding year for Beta Alpha Psi. Our theme for the 2010-2011 year was “The Bridge to Our Future.” The focus of the regional meetings and the annual meeting was on helping our members develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to go from being an outstanding student to a successful professional. Our core values include the following:

Building relationships with peers and professionals Recognizing and rewarding scholastic success

Our new initiatives also include one new award and one new competition. The award is the Outstanding Dean Award. The recipient of the first Outstanding Dean Award is Dr. Gail Naughton from San Diego State University. The new competition is the Ethics Award, which will be

Business Information Professionals of the Year Professor Kenneth Milani has touched the lives of thousands of students, colleagues, and members of the local and international communities. His teaching, his development and coordination of the Taxpayer Assistance Program, his participation in professional activities, his talks and his research captured in over 80 publications, speak to a long and significant effort in advancing the profession of accountancy and his commitment to lifelong service. His dedication to both of these goals has been recognized over the years with significant honors and awards. Specific examples that highlight Professor Milani’s tremendous level of service and impact follow: Taxpayer Assistance Program (TAP): Professor Milani developed the Taxpayer Assistance Program in 1972 and has served as the faculty coordinator for 38 years. His vision was to provide his accounting students with an opportunity to offer free income tax preparation service to low-income individuals on a regularly scheduled basis at convenient locations. The program has since expanded to include an international tax assistance program. Kenneth Milani Education Taxpayers can go to numerous library branch sites throughout the community, and all day sites are organized for outlying areas. International students and staff from Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College are assisted at an on-campus site. Unique to TAP is the “SWAT” team, (Students Working at Taxation), a group of students who prepare the returns of elderly and disabled taxpayers by going to their homes. Professor Milani handles all the training of Beta Alpha Psi members and other accounting students. In addition to training on the federal and state forms, he instills a sense of respect and compassion in the students. Working at each site at least once during the tax season, students observe first hand Professor Milani’s caring approach to each taxpayer’s situation. More than 3,000 taxpayers are served by TAP each year. Beta Alpha Psi: In addition to TAP as one of the chapter’s primary community service projects for the spring semester, Professor Milani also presents one professional meeting each year. As most students are members of BAP for two years, Professor Milani has developed two presentations that he alternates every other year: “Tax Tips for the Graduate” and “Personal Finance.” These presentations elicit some of the highest attendance records by the members. Mendoza College of Business: Since 1989, Professor Milani has edited a monthly publication called Value Lines. This publication is a compilation of articles on ethics and value-based leadership and allows the faculty to incorporate timely articles into their classes consistent with the College’s mission of advancing ethical business practices. Since 1998, the week of Valentine’s Day is designated Ethics Week in the College and Professor Milani organizes daily speakers over the lunch hour. Open to students, faculty and staff, the presentations incorporate different ethical and personal values topics. Professor Milani is passionate in everything he does and is committed mitted to both professional activities and service to the community. Ken Milani was nominated by the Beta Sigma chapter at the University of Notre Dame. •

2011 Outstanding Dean Award This year, Beta Alpha Psi announced the new Outstanding Dean Award, which recognizes deans for their support to their universities’ Beta Alpha Psi chapters. To be considered for this award, and the candidate must be serving as the dean of the institution at the time of the nomination and have made a significant contribution in faculty support and/or financial support to helping achieve the goals and objectives of the chapter.

Dr. Gail Naughton

San Diego State University

Dr. Gail Naughton – San Diego State University In this time of serious budget crisis for California public universities, Dr. Naughton has been a tireless fundraiser, promoter of the School of Accountancy, and the Beta Eta chapter. Dr. Naughton understands the value of tenure-track faculty advisor, David DeBoskey, and goes out of her way to acknowledge and make known David’s hard work and dedication, resulting in greater awareness of this service commitment throughout the university and business community. Without such an encouraging dean, that support network would most likely be absent or severely diminished.

More importantly, Dr. Naughton supports and encourages the establishment of outside relationships with the professional community. This enables the Beta Eta chapter to build significant connections that strengthen its ability to attract quality speakers on current accounting topics and fundraise within the professional community. Dr. Naughton, through the College of Business Administration, has made available special resources to allow for travel and many of the activities and events that are integral to the Beta Alpha Psi student experience. Six SDSU BAP members had their travel expenses covered to the BAP annual meeting by funds made available and allocated through the College of Business Administration budget, which Dr. Naughton and her administrative staff procure and administer. Dr. Naughton comes from the world of business. She holds over 100 patents and has founded two separate biotech companies. She was chosen as the Woman of the Year by San Diego Magazine in 2006. In conclusion, Dr. Naughton has been an inspirational and proven leader who unselfishly gives her time and expertise to ensure the success of the BAP program and its top-notch students. Dr. Naughton was nominated by the Beta Eta chapter at San Diego State University •

One of the most vital elements in the success of a Beta Alpha Psi chapter is the Faculty Advisor. Through countless hours of commitment, individual Faculty Advisors make substantial contributions to the professional growth and development of business financial information students. Beta Alpha Psi, through its cooperation with McGladrey, is privileged to recognize outstanding Faculty Advisors who have demonstrated those rare qualities that place them at the top of all the dedicated Faculty Advisors. This year, the board of directors again has selected Outstanding Faculty Advisors based on a nomination form completed by the individual Faculty Advisors. The nomination committee considers (1) years of service, (2) various chapter activities, (3) chapter awards and (4) other supporting documentation. Together, the years of service, activities, awards and other relevant documentation demonstrate the Faculty Advisor’s support for scholastic and professional development of students as well as the overall success of the chapter. For 2010-2011, five professors have been named Outstanding Faculty Advisors. They join 209 of their colleagues recognized by Beta Alpha Psi since the award was started in 1969 in memory of Richard E. Claire by the Andersen Foundation and has been funded by McGladrey since 2007. Honorees receive a plaque and a cash award of $5,000 in tangible recognition of their service to Beta Alpha Psi.

Regional Meetings 2011 Objectives for Regional Meetings Regional meetings focus on 1) promoting inter-chapter activities; 2) encouraging student interest in emerging business issues; 3) providing students the opportunity to develop communication skills, both written and oral; 4) providing members with the opportunity to exchange ideas concerning chapter operations and activities in both formal and informal settings; 5) providing the opportunity for general-leadership training for officers and members; and 6) fostering innovative and unique activities to promote and share best practices. The year’s regional meetings were attended by more than 1,460 students representing 230 chapters. The Nancy C. Harke Executive Office funded more than $85,000 for eight regional meetings. Each of the regional meetings was supported by members of the International Advisory Forum and attended by at least two board members and the respective Chapter Advocate.

2011 Annual Report

All chapters are encouraged to share their Best Practices through a two-step competitive process. Initially chapters will submit an abstract and, if found eligible, make a presentation at their respective regional meeting. Winning chapters (first, second and third place) will: 1) receive verbal recognition and monetary awards and 2) first-place chapters will earn the right to give their presentations at BAP’s annual meeting. Winning chapters at the annual meeting will be awarded a plaque, verbal recognition and additional monetary awards. For 2011, to the left is the list of chapters that won first place at the 2011 regional meeting and will be eligible to participate at the 2011 annual meeting in Denver, CO.

Deloitte has been the proud sponsor of the Best Practices program at both the regional and annual meetings since 2001. Its sponsorship is intended to encourage students to develop and execute programs that promote awareness and student involvement in projects that exemplify values shared by Beta Alpha Psi and Deloitte. These values are captured and promoted through the topics selected each year by the President-elect and the Deloitte Forum Member.

15

Outstanding Chapter Awards and Chapter Information Beta Alpha Psi’s Psi objectives are accomplished through the activities of its individual chapters. Activities of each chapter are evaluated and approved based on a report submitted by the chapter to the Executive Office in accordance with Beta Alpha Psi’s Program for Chapter Activities. KPMG LLP and The KPMG Foundation proudly sponsor the Gold Challenge and Superior Chapter Awards. Seven chapters were named Gold Chapters at the 2011 annual meeting and will receive a monetary reward of $2,500 and a plaque. Each Superior chapter will receive a plaque and a $275 monetary award to be used for a scholarship or other purposes. For their activities, 140 chapters have been recognized as Superior, and 36 chapters have been recognized as Distinguished. Three chapters have been recognized as Significantly Improved, and one chapter has been recognized as Most Improved. The Most Improved receives a monetary reward of $500 paid by the fund established as a Memorial to Beta Alpha Psi’s former Executive Director, Nancy C. Harke.

Nancy C. Harke Executive Office We are very fortunate that Beta Alpha Psi had another excellent year with over 12,000 new candidates and over 1,700 participants at our regional meetings. We received six new petitions and two additional petitions since year end including one from the University of Technology, Sydney. We expect to install up to five chapters in 2011-12. During this year, Beta Alpha Psi launched its e-newsletter with four issues being published and established the BAP Portal. During the year, I have the privilege of traveling to different parts of the country to represent Beta Alpha Psi. At the end of April, I attended the AACSB’s International Conference and Annual Meeting in New York City. As you are aware, Beta Alpha Psi requires AACSB or EQUIS accreditation at colleges in order to have a chapter. At our booth, I thanked many of your deans and associate deans who support our Beta Alpha Psi chapters. I met deans at newly accredited universities and invited them to petition for chapters. I also explained the benefits of BAP to many deans from around the world who are not yet familiar with our honors organization.

The Nancy C. Harke Executive Office is operated under the direction of the Beta Alpha Psi board of directors. Support for the office is provided by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) under the terms of an alliance that has allowed Beta Alpha Psi to streamline the reporting process, and to take advantage of may available resources. Contacting the Executive Office Email: [email protected] Phone: 919.402.4044 Fax: 919.402.4040 Mail: 220 Leigh Farm Road Durham, NC 27707

I am always amazed at the energy level at our regional meetings. I attended meetings in Anaheim, Dallas, Lincoln, Providence and Salt Lake City. They were based on our theme for the year: The Bridge to our Future, yet the programs, topics and activities were different. Thank you very much to the faculty advisors and students of our host chapters, to the board and Forum members, all of the participants, and to our excellent conference planners who coordinate everything! One of the main reasons I went to Salt Lake City was to participate in the installation of our Mu Pi chapter at Utah Valley University in Orem, UT. This was only the third chapter installation I have attended during my 7+ years with Beta Alpha Psi. There was a lot of planning and forethought that went into this chapter installation. There was a lot of pride among the administration, faculty and students upon this new beginning as the Mu Pi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi. We toured the campus, met many faculty members and deans, and most importantly greeted the newly installed members. It was a very memorable evening! I would also like to congratulate the other new chapters that were installed this year: Xavier University, Massey University, and Adelphi University. In conjunction with our regional meeting in Anaheim, I visited several hotels since our 2013 annual meeting will be there. This entails looking at the meeting space available, the flow from room-toroom and the adequacy of the breakout space for our sessions. It also involves walking around the neighborhood to check on the adequacy of restaurants and the possibility of activities for fun, culture, and relaxation. Fortunately, Anaheim is a huge tourist area and will provide a terrific location for our annual meeting. Last fall, Margie Fiorentino and I went to Canada to visit a university that is considering establishing a chapter. We met with the department chair, deans, students and several faculty members, answering many questions about chapter operations. Several of these individuals attended universities in the US and have familiarity with Beta Alpha Psi. On our way, we had lunch with the faculty advisors and officers of our chapters at the University at Buffalo and Niagara University. It was a terrific opportunity for the student officers to ask us questions about how the Executive Office operates. Both chapters were extremely enthusiastic about serving as mentors when we begin to establish chapters in Canada. We are fortunate to have a very dedicated staff in the Executive Office. Margaret Fiorentino is responsible for all communications as well as being in charge of PCA reporting and questions. She, along with our Alumni Representatives spearheaded the creation of our newsletter and portal. Esteban Alicea-Rivera is our Web designer who designs and posts updates our website. Since the beginning of the year, he has been working with a programmer to relaunch our Website this coming fall. I also want to recognize Beth Woloski and her colleagues in the AICPA Conference Planning team who work with us in planning our meetings as well as being the on-site administrators. Thank you to everyone in team AICPA who support our operations. Finally, thank you to our dedicated board members, Faculty Advisors, chapter officers, members and other volunteers who are the essence of what Beta Alpha Psi is today. Best wishes to everyone for a successful 2011-12 academic year!

Financial Statements

Report of Independent Public Accountants To the board of directors Beta Alpha Psi We have audited the accompanying statements of financial position of Beta Alpha Psi as of April 30, 2011 and 2010, and the related statements of activities and cash flows for the years then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Organization’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audits provide a reasonable basis for our opinion. In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Beta Alpha Psi as of April 30, 2011 and 2010, and the changes in its net assets and cash flows for the years then ended, in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America. Financial Statements NOTE 1 — PURPOSE AND SUMMARY OF ACCOUNTING POLICIES: Purpose: Beta Alpha Psi (the “Organization”) is a nonprofit international honorary and service organization for accounting, finance and information systems students at AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited universities. The Organization provides opportunities for development of technical and professional skills to complement university education; participation in community service; and interaction among students, faculty and professionals. The Organization’s objectives are accomplished through the activities of its chapters. Financial resources to promote these activities are provided by the chapters and various public and private firms. Accounting method: The accompanying financial statements are prepared on the accrual basis of accounting. Use of estimates: The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect certain reported amounts and disclosures. Accordingly, actual results could differ from those estimates. Cash and cash equivalents: The Organization considers instruments with an original maturity of three months or less when purchased to be cash equivalents. As of April 30, 2011 and 2010, the Organization’s cash equivalents consisted primarily of money market funds. Investments: Short and long-term investments for the years ended April 30, 2011 and 2010 consist of certificates of deposit with varying maturity lengths. Certificates of deposit with maturities

2011 Annual Report

of greater than three months, but less than one year are considered short-term. Certificates of deposit greater than one year are considered held long-term. Concentrations of credit risk: Financial instruments which potentially subject the Organization to concentrations of credit risk consist of cash and cash equivalents. The Organization maintains its cash and cash equivalents in account balances, which may at times exceed the insured amount under the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”) and the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (“SIPC”). As of April 30, 2011, the Organization’s cash balance did not exceed the current insured amount under FDIC and SIPC. At April 30, 2010, the Organizations cash balance exceeded the current insured amount under FDIC and SIPC by approximately $173,000. Cash equivalent amounts invested in a Sweep Investment Account (“Sweep Account”), collateralized by U.S. Government securities, are not insured nor guaranteed by the FDIC. As of April 30, 2011 and 2010, the balance in the Sweep Account was $0 and $905,000, respectively. Accounts receivable: Credit risk with respect to accounts receivable is limited because the Organization deals with a large number of members in a wide geographic area. The Organization closely monitors the extension of credit to its members. On a periodic basis, the Organization evaluates its accounts receivable and establishes an allowance for doubtful accounts, based on a history of past write-offs and collections and current credit considerations. As of April 30, 2011 and 2010, the Organization has no significant concentrations of credit risk and there is no allowance for doubtful accounts established as management believes that all amounts are collectible.

Financial Statements Website development costs: All costs incurred in planning the development of a website are expensed as incurred. Costs, other than general and administrative and overhead costs, incurred in the website application and infrastructure development stage, which involve acquiring or developing hardware and software to operate the website, are capitalized. Fees paid to an Internet service provider for hosting a website on its server(s) connected to the Internet are expensed over the estimated period of benefit. Other costs incurred during the operating stage, such as training, administration and maintenance costs, are expensed as incurred. Costs incurred during the operating stage for upgrades and enhancements of a website are capitalized if it is probable that they will result in added functionality. Capitalized website development costs are amortized on a straight-line basis over their estimated useful life. The unamortized costs remaining as of April 30, 2011 and 2010 represent salary and outsourced costs associated with new site development and enhancements. Net assets: The Organization’s financial resources have been combined into two net asset classes (unrestricted and temporarily restricted) based upon stipulations imposed by donors. Unrestricted net assets include expendable resources over which the Organization’s Board of Directors has discretionary control and are used to carry out the Organization’s operations in accordance with its by-laws.

Contributed services: The Organization recognizes contribution revenue for certain contributed services received at the fair value of those services. Those services include facilities and organizational support valued at $130,348 and $109,639 for the years ended April 30, 2011 and 2010, respectively, furnished by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. See Note 4 for additional services provided by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. In addition, a significant amount of time, for which no value has been assigned as it does not meet the criteria for recognition, was volunteered by professionals, professors and students to the activities of the Organization. Contributed property and fixtures: Contributed property and fixtures are recorded at fair value at the date of donation. If donors stipulate the use of the assets, the contributions are recorded as restricted support. In the absence of such stipulations, contributions of property and fixtures are recorded as unrestricted support. No contributed property or fixtures were donated for the years ended April 30, 2011 and 2010. Revenue recognition: Revenue from initiation and chapter maintenance fees is recorded in the period the fees are due. Contributions, as well as charter and petition fees, are recognized in the period received. Revenue received from the annual student convention regional meetings and other conferences is recognized in the period in which the event occurs.

Temporarily restricted net assets include resources expendable only for those purposes specified by a donor or grantor. The restrictions are satisfied by specific expenditures of the Organization.
