NEW POLICE CHIEF – LT. STEVEN MCDONALD Lt. Steven McDonald, who has a 20 year career in law enforcement, has been selected to serve as the Chief of the Sultan Police Department and Commander of the East Precinct, What are storm drains? The grated storm drains you see on almost every street corner allow rain water to drain from streets. They are especially important during storms when the high volume of water falling on streets would otherwise cause flooding.

effective September 1, 2016. The previous chief, Lt. Monte Beaton, was reassigned to the Personnel Development Division to oversee employee training and development. “I’m looking forward to serving the residents of Sultan and East Snohomish County.” NEW PUBLIC WORKS FIELD SUPERVISOR – NATE MORGAN

How you can help keep catch basins clean Given the City’s limited budget and staff and the size of the infrastructure, City of Sultan requires citizens to help keep streets safe and storm drains clean. Please regularly inspect storm drains in front of or near your house and remove debris. The following simple actions can help keep streets open and catch basins clean: 1. Monitor and clean the catch basin near your house or business, especially prior to a rain event and after a snow and ice event. 2. Stand on the curb and use a rake or pitch fork to clear leaves and debris from catch basins so that water can drain easily. Do not try to remove the grate. 3. Do not rake or blow leaves from your yard into the street. Bag them at the curb in the parking strip and prepare them for curbside pickup. Contact City Hall for information on yard waste service. 4. For leaves that have already fallen on the street, rake them 10 to 12 inches from the curb, allowing water to flow to the catch basin without the leaves. 5. Dispose of waste in trash receptacles instead of sweeping it into the gutters or catch basins. Dispose of leaves and yard debris in curbside yard debris containers. Pile shoveled snow where it can be absorbed into the ground. 6. Notify the City at 360.793.2231 if you cannot clear a catch basin yourself.

The City recently hired Nate Morgan as the new Public Works Field Supervisor. A Sultan resident, he was selected from a strong group of candidates and started in his new position on September 6th. Nate comes to us from Northshore Utility District where he has significant experience in water distribution and sanitary sewer collection. Nate will be replacing Connie Dunn who is retiring from public service in October after serving the City for over 27 years. We are confident Nate will be a strong addition to the Public Works department. Nate says… “I'm really excited to work for this great community.”

RECYCLE RATE INCREASE At the August 11, 2016 council meeting, Ordinance 124216 was approved to increase the current rate for recycle service from $9.15 per month to $10.05 per month. This increase will take effect on October 1, 2016. Therefore, you will see the rate increase on your November billing statement. If you have questions, or concerns, please contact the Utility Billing Office at 360.793.2231.
