Official Rules THE TEAM Teams will be made up of sixten players. Six players will compete on each side; additional team members will be available as substitutes. Substitutes may enter the game only during timeouts, in the case of an injury or if a player from the same team catches a ball. THE GAME The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT" ( Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, official or other item outside of the playing field wall, ceiling, etc ). This may be done by: 1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball anywhere on the body (excludes head). 2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground (if the ball hits a player first and they or another player on their team catch the ball before it hits the ground then the opponent who threw it is out). BOUNDARIES During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may leave the boundaries only to retrieve stray balls. THE OPENING RUSH The game will begin by placing the dodgeballs along the center line. Players then take a position behind their end line. Following a signal by the official or referee, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls. This signal officially starts the contest. Teams may not cross the center line. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken back to the endline before it can be legally thrown. TIMING AND WINNING A GAME The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A threeminute time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the three minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. If both teams share the same number of players after three minutes they will enter sudden death. SUBSTITUTIONS When a player is “OUT” they will stand along the designated outline in order from first out to last out. If a player from their own team commits an act that allows them to reenter onto the court (catching a ball) then only the first out player may enter the court. Players may not rearrange the order of their “OUT” line. RULE ENFORCEMENT All rules can be overruled by referees (referees are UA Youth Leadership Staff and announcers).
