Script Actors walk on stage Tessie:

Hey, Jessie, how’s things?

Jessie:

Do I know you?

Tessie:

Know me? I’m your sister. . . . . Tessie. Helloooo! Earth to Jessie!

Jessie:

Oh, yeh, I know you are my sister Tessie. But, I wonder, do I know you?

Tessie:

Uhhh, yeh. You’ve been out in the sun without a hat again, haven’t you Jessie?

Jessie:

Be serious.

Tessie:

Me be serious? You are the one who is asking the hair color challenged questions.

Jessie:

Well, see, it’s just that I wonder if we really know each other.

Tessie:

Good question. Maybe we oughta review it a bit. First, you are my younger sister. Have been all your life.

Jessie:

Agreed, that’s true.

Tessie:

I was around before you were born. Our parents told me about you even before you were born, told me I was gonna have a little brother or sister.

Jessie:

Must have been a great feeling for you.

Tessie:

It was okay.

Jessie:

OK?

Tessie:

I was kinda pullin’ for a dog.

Jessie:

Thanks a lot.

Tessie:

Not a problem. We all have our disappointments. I overcame the feeling, eventually I even got to thinking it wasn’t a totally bad idea. Until the rubber boot thing happened.

Jessie:

Rubber boot thing? What rubber boot thing?

Tessie:

Mom gave you my red rubber boots with the picture of Snoopy on the sides.

Jessie:

I remember that, you had outgrown them. Mom gave them to me.

Tessie:

They were mine.

Jessie:

They were too small for you.

Tessie:

Doesn’t change the fact they were mine.

Jessie:

Sounds kind of petty if you ask me.

Tessie:

I didn’t ask. And they were bought especially for me.

Jessie:

Tessie, they were standard, off-the-rack Walmart Snoopy red rubber boots!

Tessie:

Naa ahh! These were one of a kind. Snoopy had a black head band.

Jessie:

Black head band? Tessie, you took Dad’s paint and painted a silly stripe across Snoopy’s head! For which Mom grounded you for a week as I recall.

Tessie:

My point exactly. Me and Snoop, we been through a lot, along comes you, first you disappoint me in not being a dog, then you have to steal my Snoopy rubber boots.

Jessie:

I do not believe this! Look, if the silly old rubber boots are so important to you, I still have them, you can have them back.

Tessie:

As if I would want them now! They are too small for me.

Jessie:

Tessie, they were too small for you back then too!

Tessie:

Maybe so, but it was a closer fit back then.

Jessie:

There was a lotta good times back then, wasn’t there, Tessie?

Tessie:

Yeh, great times, Jessie! Like the time we went camping in our back yard, just the two of us.

Jessie:

I remember that! You were afraid of the noises so you came and slept with me in my sleeping bag.

Tessie:

Me? Afraid? I don’t think so Tim, er Jessie. I could sense your fear, so I came to make you feel better.

Jessie:

Whatever! (pauses, smiles) I really got to know you better, being close to you like that.

Tessie:

Yes, it was great. And then there were the times we went to camp together. You were a good camper you know, taught me a lot.

Jessie:

It was good to have you for an older sister you know.

Tessie:

I was always proud to be your big sister. You were a cool kid you know. Where did you go wrong?

Jessie:

Very funny! It was good getting to know you while growing up, but, know what?

Tessie:

Is this going to be a deep philosophical question?

Jessie:

Yes, and no.

Tessie:

I was afraid of that.

Jessie:

Point is, most people just “know” other people.

Tessie:

And that’s a bad thing, right?

Jessie:

Well, yes and . . .

Tessie:

. . .don’t tell me, yes and no.

Jessie:

Exactly!

Tessie:

Notice that fork in the road back there? I think you lost me.

Jessie:

Well, point is, it’s ok that we know people, what their name is, where they live, maybe some of the things they like and dislike. But it’s one thing to know them and another think to “know” them.

Tessie:

Have you ever considered psychiatry? Or being a carnival clown?

Jessie:

You know what I mean. We not only are friends who grew up as sisters, we know each other. We know the deep down thoughts each other has, we share intimate thoughts. We know each other . . .personally.

Tessie:

Good point. Reminds me of Bible study last night. We were talking about knowing God, how we can know Him without knowing Him.

Jessie:

People would hardly even know we are sisters, way we talk, right?

Tessie:

No, what we meant was, it is very possible to know God on a very surface level, know that He exists, maybe even know and acknowledge that He is the Mighty Creator. But it’s quite another to truly “know” Him. For to truly know Him is to acknowledge who He is in our life. Up close and personal.

Jessie:

I’m glad you’re my sister, Tessie.

Tessie:

I’m glad you’re my sister too, Jessie. And, about the rubber boots, I forgive you.

Jessie:

Thanks.

Tessie:

No big thing. It was the principal of the thing, that’s all. You looked really nerdy in them.

Jessie:

Thanks, I think.

Tessie:

You’re welcome. I know.

Jessie:

I’m glad I really know you, sis.

Tessie:

You should consider it a great privilege. I’m awesome . . . . . just ask me, I’ll tell you.

Jessie:

I especially like your modesty.

Tessie:

Check out the good looks while you’re at it.

Jessie:

I love you.

Tessie:

And, you, you remind me a lot of myself.
