Going through the tough times and the end result of its effect on self and family. We will discuss your story and hopefully lighten some of your burden so that you can leave the workshop without feeling heavy hearted.

Our Faithful Companions: Conceptualizing The Value And Health Benefits Of The Human Animal Bond The roles of animals in the lives of people have been sensationalized over the years and there has been more attention given to the healing benefits of interactions with various species of animals. Our relationship with these beings lends itself not only to the physical benefit of interacting with a furry or feathered friend as a companion, but also to the emotional and health benefits. Within this session, attention will be given to defining the key ingredients to the human animal bond, key theories that explain why it occurs as well as clarify the psychological and physiological benefits derived from the bond.

5. Understanding The Relationship Between Sex Addiction And Depression Presenter: Ma’at Xi, Ed.D Sex is a healthy human pleasure that is essential for the survival of the species. This course will provide an understanding of the relationship between sex addiction and depression and how to heal from this complex and misunderstood addiction.

Richard Ettelson will discuss aspects of recovery from depression and bipolar illness that have to do with relationships and support systems. The goal for the talk will be to help people maximize support from others to enhance their recovery.

2. Learn To Manage Anxiety Through Relaxation Presenter: Tracey L. Shepherd, PhD Discuss the effects of anxiety on our mental and physical health. We will also discuss the importance of reducing anxiety and stress through various techniques.

3. Maternal Mental Health: Shedding Light on Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Presenter: Janiel Henry, Psy.D Current research estimates that about 15- 20% of women experience perinatal mood and anxiety disorders during the perinatal period. Understanding Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders and building awareness regarding this topic is critical for the health and effective treatment of not only our mothers and infants but for our entire community.

Riding The Rhythms Of Self-Care Presenter: Gurucharan Khalsa, PhD To nurture a relationship with the core self in the simple rhythms of life – of movement, breath, the beating of the heart – is to is to strengthen your ability to return to a healthy, effective core from which you can then move more fully into what you deem to be of lasting value. We will practice grounding: in the body, in relationship and in spirit.

9. Bipolar Disorder - The Future Presenter: Himasiri De Silva M.D. Will discuss the present classification, STEP-BD program, Influence of Genetic Studies and future treatments. The future looks bright.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER— Antoinette MK Brunasso, Psy.D Stress And Mood Disorders: Finding Healthy Ways To Cope. Living with a mood disorder is not only challenging to the individual but to the family as a whole. When stress is added to an already challenging situation, this can cause strain within self, relationships, and the family. Understanding the stress while finding better coping strategies will decrease symptoms and strengthen relationships with self and others.

WORKSHOPS 10. Learning To Forgive: A Relational And Psychodynamic Approach To Forgiveness Presenter: Dustin Shultz, MA, LMFT A tenet of psychodynamic therapy, self-awareness is an important element. Having an ethos of self-awareness and self-exploration, psychodynamic therapy strives to not only alleviate symptoms, but lead people to live healthier lives that continue to improve after treatment is done. Participants will be able to identify areas of forgiveness, what forgiveness is and is not, and what forgiveness does for our healing.

11. The Power Of Positive Psychology For A Happier You Presenter: Kristin Kleppe, Psy.D Positive psychology studies the age-old question of why some people are happy despite difficult life circumstances and others are unhappy despite the best of circumstances. In this session, Dr. Kristin Kleppe reviews the latest research in positive psychology including techniques that can be easily adopted to improve physical, emotional and spiritual health.

12. Evidence-Based Psychotherapy and Its Usefulness in Treating Trauma-Related Concerns Presenter: Christine D. Scher, PhD Dr. Scher will describe what evidence-based psychotherapy is, why it is important, and how to locate mental health professionals committed to evidence-based practice. She will also discuss scientifically-supported psychotherapies for trauma-related concerns such as PTSD and depression.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER— Dennis Walstrom, PhD Heartspeak: The Psychotherapeutic Language of Healing The human heart has taken on a new significance as the center for integrating brain, body, mind, and spirit. Far more than just a muscle, the heart plays a central role in coping with stress and depression, reorienting to trauma, as well as in relationships, creativity, and work. Dr. Wallstrom offers time-honored methods for accessing the wisdom of the heart in ways that bring healing and wholeness to our lives.

Music Has Healing Powers Presenter: Mike Sullivan, Musician Having gone through depression, anxiety, and OCD throughout his life, music is the medicine that helps him achieve inner peace, on a daily basis, and you can too. Music Heals. Music is medicine. Music can enhance your inner peace, one day at a time.

15. The Heartpath: The Shared Journey of the Scientist, the Helper and the Healer. Presenter: Dennis Walstrom, Phd In this workshop Dr. Wallstrom demonstrates how one may engage the heart of a person to bring healing, growth, and change to all dimensions of life. By traveling the “heartpath,” we engage the whole person, and address the “innermost being,” the “secret heart,” with laughter, metaphor, story, touch, and contemplation.

WAYS TO CUT CONFERENCE COSTS Eat a hearty breakfast before going. Flying will eliminate the cost of meals and lodging and gas. Otherwise, take snacks in the car, such as canned Slimfast, cheese, buttered crackers, mixed nuts and BOTTLED WATER. Divide the gas costs. Arrange ahead for up to four roommates. Eat a hearty lunch but save some of it for a light dinner you can box to take to your room. Free snacks will be available in the Conference’s HOSPITALITY ROOM both days. The Creative Arts Consortium will inform you of their decision to display your artwork by September 1, 2017.

The Creative Arts Consortium is an organization that promotes the art, writing and performing arts of persons with mental illness. We have been invited to mount an exhibit at the conference. If you would like to have your art considered for inclusion in the exhibit, it must be submitted for acceptance in the following way: 1. Art must be appropriately framed for hanging. 2. Canvas, if unframed, must be painted or finished on the sides with no staples showing. 3. Artwork or Sculpture must be original. (Absolutely No Copies or Computer Generated Artwork Allowed). 4. Include all important information such as size, media, artist’s name, artwork name. 5. Include a Statement from the artist on a 3”X5” card, neatly printed or typed. 6.
