Dan Holland, Master of Public Management Biography Dan Holland recognizes that who he is trying to attract to the movement is as important as the buildings he is trying to save. As the founder and CEO of the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh (YPA), Dan recruits young people to join a growing effort to explore, appreciate, and preserve the region’s history. In 2002, Dan started YPA as the only organization in the United States committed to the participation of young people in historic preservation. The organization has grown to more than 350 members in 19 states and has a successful track record of being a catalyst for preservation in southwestern Pennsylvania. Operating from his home base of Pittsburgh, Pa., Dan has more than 15 years of experience in the nonprofit field. Relevant experience includes the following: •Co-Author, “Images of America: Neville Island,” Arcadia Publishing, November 2008, with Gia Tatone. •Primary researcher and contributing author for the study, African American Historic Sites Survey of A"egheny County, 1760-1960, published by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1994. •
Primary researcher for the “The Manchester Neighborhood Transformation Initiative” historic preservation plan for the Manchester Citizens Corporation, Pittsburgh, Pa., 2003.

Successful City of Pittsburgh historic nominations of the Centre Avenue YMCA (1995), Murray Hill Avenue Historic District (2000), New Granada Theatre (2004), and National Negro Opera Company in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood (2008).

Project Director, “Youth Main Street Advisors” video production project with four high schools in the Pittsburgh region to develop recommendations for how young people would revitalize their historic commercial corridors. Funded by a grant from the Heinz Endowments (2007).

An experienced writer, Dan was published in the Spring 2007 issue of Forum Journal (National Trust for Historic Preservation), “How Demographics Shape the Future of the Preservation Field” and the article, “Using Diversity to Re-Frame the Preservation Movement,” for Rutgers University’s Cross Ties magazine (March 2009).
Dan has held positions at both regional and national community development organizations, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Pittsburgh Branch (Pittsburgh), Mon Valley Initiative (Homestead), National Community Capital Association (Philadelphia) and the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (Washington, DC). These positions provided Dan with the opportunity to conduct trainings, build community coalitions, provide technical assistance, and give a number of public speeches. Dan is on the boards of Preservation Action, the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, and Robert Morris University’s Board of Visitors for the School of Communications. Dan was a 2008 Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Dan was named among the “Top 40 Under 40” by Pittsburgh Magazine and the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP) in fall 2007. A Pittsburgh native, Dan has a bachelor of arts degree in applied history from Carnegie Mellon University and a master of public management degree from CMU’s H. John Heinz School of Public Policy and Management. 2009
