National Conference titled "Social Innovations for Improving Urban Sanitation: Lessons for Scaling-up" Date: 14 December 2016

Venue: India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

Shramana Dey, Research Consultant, CSTEP, attended the day-long national conference titled "Social Innovations for Improving Urban Sanitation: Lessons for Scaling-up", jointly organised by the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) and Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA). The conference featured various social innovations being employed by civil society organisations (CSOs) in the sanitation sector. Such innovations are being used in many parts of the country and are primarily derived from local needs and context. The participating CSOs endeavoured to answer questions on what were the accomplishments and challenges for their initiatives, and whether the initiatives could be scaled up for implementation at a larger scale. The speakers at the conference included Ms. Sindhushree Khullar, former head of NITI Aayog, and representatives from ministries of national and state governments; research institutions and academia; CSOs like CSYD, Shelter Associates, Kamdar Swasthya Suraksha Mandal and Gramalaya; and international development agencies such as European Commission and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
