LSE Urban Age Conference, 2014 Date: November 14-15, 2014

Venue: New Delhi

Sujaya Rathi, Principal Research Scientist and Shrimoyee Bhattacharya, Senior Researcher from CSTEP were invited to attend the 13th Urban Age Conference organised by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Alfred Herrhausen Society, the International Forum of Deutsche Bank, in partnership with National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi.

The Urban Age stands for a worldwide investigation into future of cities and this year’s theme was ‘Governing Urban Futures’. The 13th Urban Age conference attempted to address this link between urban governance and collective capacities to engage with and shape the future development of cities. By enquiring about the way we govern urban futures, it offered a platform to engage with and debate different processes of anticipating and creating visions of these futures.

The conference was attended by eminent researchers, scholars, professors from internationally renowned institutions, practitioners, policy makers and high level representatives from the governments of India and other countries were part of the discussions. The sessions included brief presentations on specific topics, panel discussions and question answer sessions. The discussions focussed on analysing how decisions made (or not made) today have long-term implications, as well as enquire about the underlying conditions and processes that allow for participatory, effective, accountable and future-oriented decision making in and for cities.
