What is Cri Du Chat? • A rare chromosome disorder in which part of the fifth chromosome is missing. • 1 in 37,000-50,000 births are affected. • Cri Du Chat is slightly more common in females. • When an infant is born with Cri Du Chat, the infant cries like a cat meowing.

Signs and Symptoms of Cri Du Chat • The size of chromosome 5 depleted is related to how severe mental retardation and development delay can be. • Feeding problems • Low birth weight • Poor growth • Severe cognitive, speech, and motor delays • Hyperactive, aggressive, tantrums, and repetitive movements • Odd facial features • Excessive dribbling • May also be born with heart defects.

• There is no specific treatment for this syndrome. • This mental retardation must be addressed and can't be avoided. • Counseling is available and recommended for the parents. • Speech and physical therapy may be particularly useful for children with CDC. • Although it is rarely inherited to the offspring, parents with family history of Cri Du Chat should consider genetic counseling.
