Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa announces 24th Annual conference March 3rd & 4th, 2016 The Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa announces the 24th Annual Best Practices in Brain Injury Services Conference will be held on March 3rd and 4th, 2016, at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines, Iowa. The theme for this year’s annual conference will be "Now What? The Art and Science of Healing, Services, and Supports." Keynote speakers at this event include Yuri Danilov (Senior Scientist, PhD), Michael GamelMcCormick (PhD), and Karen McAvoy (PsyD). Dr. Danilov is a senior neuroscientist and Director of the Tactile Communication and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory based at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Danilov will present his research on cranial nerve, noninvasive neuromodulation and the development of a Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator (PoNS) device shown to noticeably reduce symptoms related to traumatic brain injury. Dr. McAvoy is the Director for the Center for Concussion at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver, CO and is the author of the REAP Project, a community-based concussion management program for families, schools and medical professionals. Recent recommendations are that children and teens should be treated much more conservatively than adults when it comes to concussion. Dr. Gamel-McCormick serves as Associate Executive Director for Policy and Research at the Association of University Centers on Disabilities in Washington, DC. Gamel-McCormick will provide an national overview of policy in education, employment, community support and healthcare for persons with disabilities.
