BLINKY FATALE a sexy and beautiful clown comes out and does a burlesque act. This goes on for awhile. Sometime during her routine she sees HAPPY and reacts. She finishes her routine. There is applause. She steps off stage to talk to HAPPY. BLINKY: Happy, you’re a sight that gives me sore eyes. HAPPY: Oh, hi there, Blinky. I didn’t see you come in. BLINKY: Didn’t cha? I was the one spreading my snatch all over the stage. HAPPY: Oh was that your snatch? It did always spread. BLINKY: What are you doing back here? As I recall the last time you came, Bobo said he would kill you if you ever returned. HAPPY: I do recall something like that. Over a girl wasn’t it? BLINKY: Not just any girl. Over Blinky Fatale. HAPPY: Oh yeah, I remember now, the girl who left me for a no good slimy mobster and clown bar owner. BLINKY: Left you? HAPPY: That’s right. Left me with not so much as a goodbye. BLINKY: Left you?! Ha! You left me. Bobo claimed me, and you slinked away. HAPPY: I went to the academy. BLINKY: Looked a lot like running to me. HAPPY: Why shouldn’t I? You weren’t around, anymore. You took off. BLINKY: That’s not how I remember it. HAPPY: You haven’t changed. BLINKY: They say you have. HAPPY: I had to. I couldn’t be who I was. BLINKY: No one ever stops being a clown. You can take off your makeup and dress up like beige people but you’ll never be one of them. HAPPY: I am one of them. BLINKY: You may look like them, but your heart is a clown heart. I can hear it from here. (like a heartbeat) Honk, honk. Honk, honk. HAPPY: People can change. BLINKY: People maybe, but not clowns.

HAPPY: I don’t believe in fate. BLINKY: It exists whether you believe it or not. Fate don’t care what you think. Why else you think you’re back here? HAPPY: I never knew there was a philosopher in you. BLINKY: I’ve had one or two in me. HAPPY: Look it was good to see you, but I’m here for a reason. BLINKY: Are you sure you know what that reason is? HAPPY: I mean – BLINKY: If you come here to do something, when the time comes to do it, you sure that’s something you can do? HAPPY: What are you talking about? BLINKY: What do you think I’m talking about? HAPPY: What do you think I think you’re talking about? BLINKY: You should have fought for me. HAPPY: What? BLINKY: You heard me. HAPPY: You weren’t fighting for me. BLINKY: What was the point if you weren’t willing to fight for me? Should I fight for a man that didn’t want me? HAPPY: I wanted you. BLINKY: Even now, I don’t believe you. HAPPY: What do I got to do to prove it? BLINKY: Fight for me. HAPPY: It’s too late. BLINKY: While you’re alive, it’s not too late. HAPPY: Blinky, you were like a very beautiful painting that got up and walked into the next room every time I tried to get a glimpse of you. You were sand through my fingers. You were a speeding freight train I was trying to catch on foot. I never knew you because you never stopped moving long enough to show me who you were. You think I knew what to do with you? You think I ever understood what you wanted? God knows you never told me. BLINKY: Happy, you are like the most frustrating man that ever lived.

(They kiss) BLINKY: Let’s get out of here. (beat) HAPPY: I want more. I want everything. The kids, the dog, the picket fence. BLINKY: Let’s run away right now. HAPPY: I don’t know. BLINKY: You don’t know about the me part or the running away part? HAPPY: What about Bobo? BLINKY: What about Bobo? HAPPY: I have unfinished business. BLINKY: Then why don’t you ask Bobo. HAPPY: I’ve been waiting around for him. BLINKY: Maybe I can get him to come out. HAPPY: How could you ever be with someone the likes of Bobo. BLINKY: Bobo treats me good. You don’t know what he’s like. When it’s just the two of us. I know he’s a bad person, but he’s good to me. I’ve known a lot of good people who were bad to me. I like it this way better. HAPPY: I got a good job, a nice apartment, a good life. The only thing missing is you. BLINKY: If I say yes, you walk out of here with me right now and we never look back? HAPPY: Are you protecting him now? BLINKY: It can go both ways. I don’t want to lose you today. Runaway with me. Forget all this. We’ll get married. That’s what you’re saying isn’t it? I’ll be a housewife. (beat) You want kids don’t you? HAPPY: I guess. It sounds nice. Maybe after I talk to Bobo. BLINKY: It won’t just be talking. HAPPY: No. BLINKY: I’ll see if I can get him to come out. HAPPY: I appreciate it. BLINKY: Yeah. HAPPY: Thanks. BLINKY: Whatever.
