Chase and the Utilities Industry: The Utility of Technology The Chase Manhattan Bank (NYSE: CMB) proudly serves the global utilities industry through many channels: the Global Bank, which includes investment banking and capital markets, and Global Services, which includes Chase Treasury Solutions, Global Investor Services, and Capital Markets Fiduciary Services. Chase is a leader in information and transaction processing services. Chase Treasury Solutions provides treasury, liquidity, and investment management solutions to financial institutions, corporations, and governments worldwide and has been recognized for its excellence in technological innovation, its six patents, and its businessto-business e-commerce applications. Given the challenges of globalization, deregulation, and the explosive growth of the Internet, the ability to streamline phases of the supply chain – from procurement to payment, from order to delivery, from receivables to collection – helps clients optimize their cash efficiency. All companies must take a fresh look at the relationship between finance and operations, while at the same time managing risk and growing shareholder value. Chase offers many products that address the needs of clients throughout the payables and receivables cycle. An example of an innovation related to the receivables side of the equation is the Chase e>Stream EBPP Solution. Every time a company sends a bill out, an opportunity exists to build customer loyalty. By replacing paper billing with electronic delivery, the Chase solution offers an efficient way for a company to manage a multiple channel approach to billing, payments, and customer retention: via websites, email, wireless, pagers, and future emerging technologies. According to McKinsey & Co., the Chase e>Stream EBPP Solution can reduce billing costs by $1.25 to $2.75 per bill cycled. These savings come from lower paper and postage costs, reduced billing cycle float,

automated accounting with fewer processing errors, and lower collections, and customer service costs. e>Stream provides a competitive advantage to companies that proactively seek to meet the demand of consumers for Internet-enabled billing. In order to facilitate the routing of electronic presentments and payments between billers, consumers, and member institutions, Chase, along with Wells Fargo and First Union, founded Spectrum LLC, a network “switch” exchange similar to the ATM network. Spectrum routes bills to the online systems of the member financial institutions thereby increasing customer reach to the maximum. Just as the ATM system was local/regional in its infancy and grew to the global reach it is today, so will Spectrum. Chase, through its retail bank, offers the Consumer Service Provider piece of the EBPP puzzle, which closes the loop from biller to consumer. The other two award-winning Global Services businesses are involved with the financing needs of the utility industry as well. When a company issues stock, Chase Global Investor Services is available for state-of-theart securities processing. When a company issues bonds, Chase Capital Markets Fiduciary Services can provide a multitude of debt-servicing trust instruments. The investment bank is known for its expertise in acquisitions and strategic advisory work, project finance, acquisition, and debt arrangement. The Global Power Group won second place in Utility M&A (Power Finance & Risk, 1999) and first place in Americas Lead Arranger (Project Finance International, 1999). The Global Oil and Gas Group won Best Overall Financing Service to the Energy Sector (Petroleum Economist, 1999). The diverse areas of Chase believe that continued ser vice of the utilities industr y is a key par t of its strategy of being the provider of choice to growing companies in the 21st centur y.
