In February the CFA Institute held its annual Society Leadership Conference (SLC) in Seoul, South Korea. CFA Society Melbourne sent 2 of its board members, Desmond Goh and Ben Listokin, to join more than 120 other delegates from around the Asia Pacific region. The conference theme was Leadership Excellence, with sessions focused on enhancing society governance as well as showcasing tools available to help local societies deliver more value to their members. Among these presentations was an introduction to Member Nation, an integrated society platform with strong analytics capabilities used to help better understand our members and benchmark against other global CFA societies. Also featured at the SLC was the launch of the Asia Research Exchange (ARX), an interactive platform for participants to share expertise and insight, learn about subjects of interest, and engage others. The SLC wrapped up with the unveiling of the CFA Institute’s new global brand campaign ‘A difference that matters’ which is currently being rolled out globally. The 2 aims of the campaign are to create awareness and understanding of CFA Institute as the leading global advocate for the advancement of the investment profession and also to get investment firms and investors to demand professionals with the highest levels of competences, embodied in the CFA designation.

CFA Melbourne Advocacy Update Dear members,

It’s been a busy start on the advocacy front and I’m pleased to say we have continue to make progress in building our brand as a respected and sought out source of thought leadership within financial markets. A couple of the key initiatives we have completed recently are as follows:

1.

2.

The formation of the Advocacy Council for Australia and New Zealand with the ultimate goal to improve the recognition and the value of the CFA charter. This will involve championing ethical behaviour in investment markets, set benchmarks and standards for good market integrity and establish credentials for professional excellence in financial services. I’m excited with what the council can achieve as its Members include industry experts with practical experience and have the ability to make a real difference to our community. With the ethical and moral hazard issues overhanging the financial planning industry, the local societies have come together and put a submission to the Treasury in relation to the Corporations Amendment Bill 2015 (relating to the Professional Standards of Financial Advisers). The two key recommendations in our submission are as follows:

Adopting Level 1 as the standard accreditation for all financial advisors. This seems logical given the rigorous ethical and technical requirements individuals need to master in order to successfully pass Level 1. Having an ethical framework and mindset when financial planners give advice can only be beneficial to clients. Appointing a CFA representative to the new Standards Body fulfilling the role of an ethics expert. Again this is sensible given we as a group champion ethical behaviour and are all committed to uphold our Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. Having a voice on the Standards Body will ensure an ethically and morally correct viewpoint is considered when decisions are made.

There are a number of exciting initiatives we continue to be working on over the coming months which I look forward to giving you an update on as they come to fruition. Regards, Thomas Tam Advocacy Chair
