Quad Dual swimming produces fast results Dennis Clark The Tribune-Star TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute North boys and girls swimming and diving teams faced tough competition while hosting four top-notch opponents in their 2010 Quad Dual at North’s pool on Saturday. How tough was that competition? That competition set six new individual records in the daylong event — four by the boys, two by the girls. Jeffersonville dominated the boys competition with a perfect 4-0 record, outscoring its opponents a combined 510-230. Mount Vernon and Lawrence North were co-champions for the girls with identical 3-0-1 records — the two teams deadlocked at 93-93 in their matchup. While both North teams were winless on the day (0-4), both teams enjoyed some individual highlights despite the stiff competition. “We did OK,” North girls coach John Newhouse stated. “We did a little better last Saturday, but we have a lot of new kids. We’re just not as deep as we were a year ago.” Casey Powers had North’s highest finish of second (200) and had a fifth (500). Megan Curley placed third (diving), Alex Nichols had a fourth (100 breaststroke) and sixth (200 IM), while Celeste Kline had a fourth (100 butterfly) and fifth (100 backstroke). Powers, Kline, Alex Nichols and Caroline Nichols also teamed up for a fourth-place finish in the final event of the day, the 400 relay. “Celeste Kline had a couple season-best times. She’s way ahead of last year at this point,” Newhouse said. “Alex Nichols also did very well. Our divers did well this morning. “Lawrence North is a conference opponent … they’re really good. Mount Vernon, Jeffersonville, they’re excellent. West Lafayette had some really good swimmers also.” The meet certainly had a tournament flavor. Along with the multitude of swimmers present, there was also an overflow crowd watching all around the glass above the pool. Mike Williams has assumed the coaching responsibilities for the Patriot’s boys team, replacing long-time coach Randy Jensen. Williams has taught at North for five years, teaching biology to freshmen, anatomy and physiology to upperclassmen. “I’m real happy with what happened today,” Williams said. “We’ve got a lot of room to grow.

We also have 16 freshmen on the team … for most of them, this was their first real swim meet. They were probably leaps and bounds ahead of where we thought they were in terms of performance. Top finishers for the North boys were Matt Guell (fifth in 100 butterfly), Connor Curley (fifth in 50, eighth in 100), Darren Saunders (eighth in 200 IM, ninth in 100 breaststroke) and Dan Burkett (eighth in 100 backstroke). Williams praised his upperclassmen, notably Burkett, Holden Barnes and John-David Logsdon. But he was very pleased with his younger swimmers too. “Connor Curley. First year on the swim team. Was very, very fast. Fun to watch,” Williams noted. “Courtland Jones swam much better than I had predicted. “We’ve got our sights on one meet and that’s the sectional. We want to do well in each individual meet, but really those are stepping stones for us to get to our goal at the end of the season.” Both North teams will compete next in a dual meet at South Vermillion on Thursday.
