Beach-nesting Birds Project Volunteer Volunteer Position Description

About the Project BirdLife Australia has a history of helping to conserve beach-nesting birds which spans 25 years. Initial involvement was through biennial Hooded Plover counts occurring across Victoria and South Australia since 2006. BirdLife Australia initiated the ‘Promoting coexistence between recreationists and beach-nesting birds’ project. What began as a case study to improve the breeding success of Hooded Plovers along the Victorian coast, evolved into a national Beach-nesting Birds (BNB) Project focusing on citizen science monitoring of breeding success and site-based threats to multiple species including the Hooded Plover, Redcapped Plover, Sooty Oystercatchers, Pied Oystercatchers and Beach Stone-curlews. The project has a multifaceted approach to conservation of beach-nesters including on-ground management of nest and chick sites, development of best practice protocols, education and public awareness campaigns and research. Monitoring via a citizen science program is regularly evaluated to shape the program and ensure an adaptive management approach. Conservation efforts for Beach-nesting Birds currently occur throughout NSW, however in 2016 we aim to further engage coastal communities in education and on-ground actions, and bring together existing volunteers/groups to form a coordinated approach to conservation.
