The introduction of the European Red Fox has caused significant conservation problems for many Australian native species. Through many studies and data collected from citizen scientists monitoring hooded plover nest fate in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales, foxes have been identified as a major predator of Hooded Plover eggs. Come to a workshop where you can learn more about fox behaviours, determining prints on the beach, and even how to search for dens. This workshop will provide you with the theory of how to identify fox prints on the sand, track fox dens, and safely determine if fox dens are active or not. There will also be the opportunity to visit a beach and test out your new skills to try and find a den! The day is designed to provide specialist knowledge to Beach-nesting Bird Volunteers and Land Managers with the aim of correctly identifying predators on the beach, and reporting the need for active management at Hooded Plover nesting sites. There will also be GPS training available, to accurately record fix dens, so bring along your GPS unit! Source: Grainne Maguire
