South Bethany Comprehensive Plan – Community Questionnaire 2011 List of Property Owners’ Comments For: Beach Services – Beach Patrol

In this survey, responders were asked to provide written comments if they marked 2 or 3 ("Very Unsatisfied" or "Unsatisfied"). Although quite often positive comments and suggestions were provided, most of the written comments tended to be negative.

Comments - Beach Patrol (Lifeguards): TOTAL: 12 Comments/860 Returns (1.4%) After each completed survey was returned to the Town, each completed survey was given a number for record keeping purposes. The number before each comment represents that number.

282-Lifeguards at one chair do not seem to be very efficient. More chairs and one lifeguard per chair seem to be a more safe and efficient way to guard the beaches. 252- As a former lifeguard, I am never very satisfied with lifeguards. 38- And Thank You! 347- Celebrate our lifeguards – appreciation efforts – picnics, contests, etc. 347- Consider purchase of some of the empty lots Oceanside – for parking, lifeguard station (a building for their use – for parking- for first aid) empty lot at North 3rd (no I am not the owner). This is an expensive proposal but worthwhile. 360 - Lifeguards are alert and beaches are well-guarded. 153- Regarding the beach patrol: 1) All chairs should have dry-erase boards to indicate the daily weather, water temperature, tides, rip currents, etc. 2) Warning flags should be flown daily to inform the public of the ocean conditions and danger levels. 3) Each lifeguard chair should have a 2-way radio and better direct communication to police and emergency services. 4) The lifeguards have been fantastic every year but they are handicapped without the above. 480- A lifeguard stand located in front of Sandpiper Village (where beach is widest) is too often unmanned. It seems that since there are more people on the beach there that this location should be a priority for staffing. 525- Does a fantastic job – super!! -1-

552- Way too much talking with each other on Stand 1. 723- Lifeguards need to enforce rule regarding people playing on the dunes. 776- Junior Lifeguard program. Great beach patrol group and they are open to this positive experience for kids and participation. Fee makes this cost neutral. Movie last summer as Beach Patrol fundraiser was a big hit and cost neutral (even made a few dollars). 853- I have listed the beach patrol as satisfactory but continue to notice that they do not enforce the No Glass regulation on the beach. For safety this must be enforced.
