ACC Prepares to Celebrate 40th Anniversary

Registration Hours News@ACC Issue 35 August 2012

Self & Others: Dynamics of Diversity Course Transfers to UConn Transferring credit from one class at ACC to UConn has just become smoother. The Transfer Admissions Office at UConn assessed ACC’s new and improved SOC* 190 “Self and Others: Dynamics of Diversity" course and it has been approved to be used in the Content Area 4 “Diversity and Multiculturalism” for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, according to Jean Egan, Program Coordinator for ACC’s Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Fall classes begin August 29th.

The acceptance was two years in the making. In 2011 and 2012, Egan worked to make sure that all adjuncts had a standard syllabus complete with the same course objectives, the same course description, and were using the same textbooks. Egan ensured that ACC’s curriculum was strong and consistent across all sections of Self & Others. As a result, UConn has now accepted ACC’s course for transfer as a Diversity and Multiculturalism course in the CLAS. “This is very exciting,” says Egan.

Visit ACC’s new web site( www. asnuntuck.edu) until August 22nd to register for fall classes online.

She adds, “This course has been a core course for every student from ACC who graduates with a degree. The fact that it now transfers to UConn and satisfies a graduation requirement for any of our students who transfer is great. It is one more way that we are making transfer easier for our students. The course approval for transfer is effective immediately.” According to Egan, the course focuses on understanding issues of diversity and inequality. The course includes 20 hours of service learning. “We are a community college, and we think students should give back to the community that financially supports their learning. Students now have the ability to help others through service learning, and help themselves by getting transfer credit for this course at UConn,” explains Egan. Students with questions about Self & Others or any Sociology course can contact Dr. Jean Egan at [email protected] or Laurie Chancey at [email protected].

In person registration is available Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Extended hours from 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. are available on August 8,15, 21, 22, 23, 27 and 28th. Senior Citizens may utilize their tuition waiver beginning August 29th .

This year we are celebrating Asnuntuck Community College’s 40th Anniversary! We recognize that it is time to reflect, celebrate our accomplishments, and gain perspective from our past as we plan for the future. The opportunities before us are both complex and exciting: to honor our past, to build additional capacity, to replace our aging infrastructure and renovate and expand our college facilities. It is exciting for all of us to be part of a growing college that is focused on providing a quality education in an accessible, affordable and nurturing environment. In this and in future newsletters you will find articles and pictures featuring our past. You will also be introduced to new faculty, new staff members and to growing programs that are such an important part of Asnuntuck today. You will be helping to design our building and campus to meet the needs of tomorrow as the Master Plan is finalized and implemented. You will be informed about all that we are doing to help students succeed.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer and we look forward to welcoming you all back to Asnuntuck on August 29th. Dr. Martha McLeod
