COMMUNICATION CORNER

OLIVEDALE HISTORY To clarify the relationship between Lancaster Parks and Olivedale is to answer with it’s history. In 1969 the Shurtz property, consisting of the house and 16.3 acres was willed to the City of Lancaster for a park called Olivedale Park. The official transfer of property to the City/Lancaster Park Board Commission was in 1970. In 1971 the senior “Young at Heart Club” petitioned the Park Board to allow meeting in the Shurtz home. The house was named Olivedale Senior Center. In 1973 a full-time director was hired. It wasn’t until 1974 that Olivedale Senior Citizens of Fairfield County, Inc. a 501c3 was formed with 577 Charter Members. Also, construction of a multi-purpose room, kitchen, and meeting rooms on the lower level and large deck overlooking the 500 year old white oak began. At the same time, a promise to three women, who delivered soup to older women in Lancaster, for the use of the

kitchen when completed. The expansion completed in 1975 along with the newly incorporated “Fairfield Community Meals” preparing meals in Olivedale’s kitchen. In 1979 the expansion to house Fairfield Community Meals was completed. In 1983 Olivedale’s kitchen was renovated. In 1996 the Park Board planned a major expansion to create Wellness Center with exercise floor, equipment and warm exercise pool along with enlarging the upstairs multipurpose area. All paid with grants and donations. So, although Olivedale pays for all activities and help with many upgrades to the facility for the comfort and enrichment of our membership, the Parks budget funds a substantial amount paying for utilities, chemicals, toiletries, bus license and insurance, grounds keeping, instructors, and staff payroll. Suffice it to say that the senior community, utilizing a Lancaster City Park benefits greatly in this relationship.

Display Case Marty Gavin and Jean Moody are “Puttin’ on the Ritz”! This dynamic duo will bring a bit of class to the Olivedale display case. Long ago Inns offered travelers a place to eat and sleep, but little or nothing more. Toward the middle of the 19th century, the rise of a new larger class of wealthy persons created a different clientele. Cesar Ritz won international fame by attracting notables to his institutions in Paris, London, New York and elsewhere. We now use RITZY to label any establishment marked by costly elegance and people and things of a sophisticated nature. This display will be “Ritzy Accessories” of the era.
