From the Principal Dear Parents, Students and Friends of GIS, It is with pleasure that I can announce the new Principal, starting August 2012. Dr Stuart Tasker hails from New Zealand. Most recently he spent 2 years as Head of Senior School at Dulwich College, Shanghai and prior to that 3 years as Head of Secondary at The Regent's School, Pattaya. Before moving to Asia he was Headmaster of Pinehurst College in New Zealand for 6 years. He is a firm believer in holistic education and is keen to ensure that the students of GIS Rayong get the most out of their time at the school. He looks forward to becoming part of the GIS community later this year and to work with the staff, parents and students themselves to make the learning experience at GIS Rayong a rich and rewarding one. He is married to Lee and has two children - Josh is almost 20 and studying Music at the University of Auckland and Rebecca is 18 and is completing IB this year in Auckland. He enjoys most sports, supports Derby County FC and has a black belt in Karate. Next year the Academic Management Team will consist of Stuart Tasker (Principal), Sage Ball (Head of Secondary), Rob Grisdale (Head of Primary and Foundation), Ian Fraser (IB Coordinator) and Chris Stokes (Deputy Head of Secondary and exams officer). Security letter Following an incident last term we have reminded parents that children are not allowed to leave school with another parent under any circumstances, unless there is a signed note giving permission written by the parent of the child in question. This note should be written in the child’s communication book and should be shown to the teacher first thing in the morning. In order to further improve our security for your children, we are going to have a page in the communication diaries - from next term - that asks you to name the person/s responsible for picking up your child from school. There will be space for you to insert a photo for identification purposes. If a person other than the nominated person tries to take your child away – they will not be allowed unless there is a signed note from yourselves in the communication diary. These are the procedures that we will be following after school from the beginning of term 3. We are not a ‘baby sitting service’ hence fees will be charged. In Foundation o At 12.15 or at 14.00 children are released to the responsible named person. o Children not picked up at 14.00 are taken to the purple room where they are looked after by a Teaching Assistant until 15.15. The fee for this service is 50 THB a day. o At 15.15 all remaining children are put into the Year 1 classroom or the Year 1 and 2 playground until 15.30. They are signed off on a register as they leave with their responsible named person. o After 15.30, no children should be remaining. Any children who are remaining will have their parents phoned from school and a supervising charge of 500 Baht, payable that day, will be levied per child. All remaining children are taken to join the Staff Children’s After School Care Club. o At 16.30 parents are phoned again. All remaining children, including staff children, are moved to the front office. o At 17.00 we will notify the appropriate authorities.

In Years 1 and 2  At 15.10 the rolling gate is opened 

Children from Years 1 and 2 wait in their classrooms to be picked up. They are signed off on a register as they leave with the designated person.

At 15.15 all remaining children are put into the Year 1 classroom or the Year 1 and 2 playground until 15.30. They are signed off on a register as they leave with their responsible named person.

Primary students earn their stripes thanks to Tiger sponsorship

Year 5 students were thrilled to receive a few items from the Wild Animal Sanctuary thanking them for their generous sponsorship of a tiger named Simba. Year Five raised an impressive 12,180 baht to sponsor the tiger. The money was sent off to the Sanctuary, specifically to sponsor a boy tiger named Simba, who was confiscated by the police from a man who was traveling from town to town with him in a small cage. Now, because of our kind students, Simba will be able to live in freedom with other wild tigers in the Sanctuary's 100-acre open habitat, eating meat and swimming in the specially-designed tiger pool.

News from Secondary Science Fair A recent Science Fair allowed GIS students to demonstrate their scientific skills. The fair was held at nearby St Andrews International School, Green Valley. While the students' projects were being judged, some fun activities were held and a Science Show was staged by the St. Andrews’ science teachers. Our first challenge was to put together a square of jigsaw pieces. This wasn’t as easy as it sounds but, as GIS is great, we managed to solve it! The next challenge was to measure out exactly 4L of water using a 5L bottle and a 3L bottle. We managed to solve this as well. We were doing well until the next challenge where we had to use a tennis ball, some paper, a bottle and masking tape to hold it together. We designed the rocket and added some water in the bottle. When we launched it using the provided launcher, our rocket simply blew apart. This was probably because of the masking tape not holding it together or too much pressure.

Despite this, the science show was fascinating and we all really enjoyed it. The Science Fair was a great event. All students worked very hard, with great results. There were 21 prizes, thanks to the generous sponsors. Only 7 people participated in this event. Next year we are hoping to host this event. We enjoyed it and If you would’ve participated you’d have enjoyed as well. Arjit.V and Abhi (Year 8)

Celebrating Songkran GIS students celebrated the Songkran new year festival with a special assembly. The Thai department put on several traditional Thai activities, including a demonstration of Muay Thai and some children's games, including 'pid taa tee moh'. Students then poured water over their teachers' hands as a sign of respect.

Picnic in the Park The staff and students at GIS are delighted to be joining the Regent's School Pattaya to raise money for the well-know children's charity in Pattaya, The Father Ray Foundation. On Sunday May 13, Regent’s School and the Fr. Ray Foundation are having a Picnic in the Park 2, which follows on from a similar event in Term 1. It will take place at the Father Ray Foundation Children’s Village near Lake Mabrachan from 3pm until 7pm. It is an afternoon of live music, entertainment, food and drink on sale, fun games and activities for the children and a small entrance fee to support different community projects. GIS will be performing this year; it will be the first joint musical event with family and friends from both schools in the audience. It will be an afternoon of music and fun for all ages and we look forward to seeing many of the GIS community there.

Superhero Mufti Day On Wednesday 4 April students dressed up as superheroes for the day! All money raised from donations on the day went to Dek Dee and a special school in Sattahip as part of our community fundraising. Prizes were given for the best superhero outfits.

We're so proud of Praw! GIS singing star Praw has won a top award for her vocal skills. Praw came joint-first in exams run by the world-famous Trinity College London. Praw was given her honour at the Trinity Awards on 6 April at the AUA Auditorium, Bangkok. Trinity devised the concept of Grade and Diploma examinations in Music in the 1870s and was the first examination board in the world to conduct examinations and awards qualifications internationally. In 2012 they added a new syllabus, called Rock and Pop syllabus. In the Pop Rock category the award winner for Vocals Grade 2 was Tawanya Brander (Praw), who scored 85 points. Four students gained this grade, so all were given first place. Her teacher is K.Rapeeporn Pratumanon (Kru Pearl) Pictured right is Praw with her teacher Kru Pearl, who also won an award. Congratulations to Praw for a fantastic achievement!

GIS Spring Concert

Garden's super-talented musicians impressed a packed audience with their Spring Concert. The GIS Spring Concert and Ceilidh was held on April 3 in the main hall. The evening began with the school choir singing HM's the King's Anthem, followed by a performance by the Yr 10 IGCSE Music group of 'Soul Limbo' (better known as the BBC's cricket theme). After the orchestra performed a Basse Dance and Gopak, the flute group staged an intricate jazz medley. Several Yr 7s then played 'Water Come To Me Eye', and then the school's jazz band made their debut with 'Town With an Ocean View'. The popular ukulele band played an impressive three-chord megamix of songs from different decades, and then the Yr 8 group reminded everyone of the school's sell-out musical Mama Mia, with their version of Super Trouper, which was sung by Praw. The first half ended with the choir returning to the stage for two more songs - Lullaby and Cee Lo Green's hit Forget You. After the break, the hall was transformed into a dance room. The Ceilidh Band then led several traditional dances, with senior students stepping in with several performances to give dancers a well-earned rest. Well done to the Music Department, the performers and everyone who helped make the evening such a success.

Award Winners At the secondary assembly on April 30, Mr Stokes handed out several certificates to our talented students. Below is a list of the subject winners. The winner of the 'Nam Jai Ngam' award for helping out around school and being considerate towards others went to Yr 11's Mar, (pictured above) and the award for Most Improved Student went to Arwut (pictured right).

Their photos will be taken and displayed with cups in the library. In addition to all these awards, several students passed their EAL exams. Two students passed their PET exams and so now join English Set 2. They are Yr 7's Prem (pictured left with Head of EAL Mr Berry) and Kevin. Several students also passed the KET examination: Jab in Year 7, Adib in Year 8 and in Year 9, Golf and Akihiro.

Camilian Centre Visits GIS

On April 4 children from the Camilian Centre came to GIS. After lunch in the school canteen, the children and GIS students headed to the main hall for some musical entertainment, followed by parties in the form rooms. Many students donated toys and gifts which were wrapped up in boxes and presented to the Camilian children. The Camilian Centre is based in Ban Chang and cares for children and adults with HIV. GIS students behaved wonderfully and helped children with difficult lives to have a fantastic afternoon - and made sure they went home with plenty of presents.

Sports News Here are the recent and upcoming sports fixtures for GIS. Good luck to everyone who will be representing the school.

FOBISSEA Games

Primary Students training hard for 'Mini-Olympics' Our Primary Students are looking forward to a major international sporting event, which will be coming to GIS in June. Three students took time out from their busy training schedule to tell the newsletter how much they were looking forward to the games. The Group C Primary FOBISSEA games will be held at GIS from June 5-8. This mini-Olympics will see students competing from schools in Nepal, Malaysia and Vietnam. Oliver, who is in Year 6, is a great T-Ball player, but will also be taking part in the football, swimming and track and field events. He said: "We are trying our best at training and getting stronger all the time. It will be good to meet new friends and just have fun." Oliver took part in a similar FOBISSEA competition in Bangkok last year and came away with an amazing 10 gold medals and three silvers, so he'll be hoping to do even better in June. GIS is currently giving extra training for our young athletes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school as well as during Tuesday club time. Mr Edwards, Mr Lynch, Ms Patsy, Ms Claire and Ms Lucy are giving up their time to help out. According to Lily, in Year 4C, everyone is benefiting from the extra sessions. Lily, who is a defensive star in the girls' football team, said: "I'm looking forward to meeting new friends and, hopefully, winning. We play football every day so we're pretty good." Inez, who is in Year 4E and a striker in the football team, added: "The training is quite hard but we're improving all the time. It's great to have so many teachers helping us out, I'm sure with their support we'll do really well." MBf Taylors has already generously agreed to sponsor the swimming kits and hats. We are also very grateful to the other sponsors: Fairway Thailand, Nomjit Manufacturing, PTT Global Chemical, SCI, Crathco, Advance Media, Lawton Asia, Elite Printer, Hydro-Tech, Union Sime Derby and Mr. Frank & Khun Su Nichols and Mr Barry Soanes. There is still time if you would also like to sponsor the event, which is expected to gain national and international coverage.

If you or your company would like to help out, please contact Ms Lucy, who is coordinating the sponsorship, at [email protected], the Head of PE, Mr Edwards, at [email protected] or Rob Grisdale at [email protected]. We are also going to be running a raffle, tickets only 10 baht each or 100baht for 12. The prizes are being donated by Fobissea parents and can be seen in the front office soon. The money will help reduce the cost to the parents whose children are representing our school.

HELPING MAKE OUR SCHOOL THE BEST IT CAN BE News from the volunteers of the P.T.A. (Parent Teachers Association)

We’re drawing close to the end of the academic year and would appreciate more active participation from GIS parents in helping the PTA. Thai-speaking parents may join, as we have member who can translate your views for you. Is anyone interested in organizing a fundraiser for the PTA such as a quiz, bake sale, garage-sale, etc? By the way, for those of you who have read, ‘Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother’ on parenting by Amy Chua, it would be great to know your views on hard work versus ‘giftedness’. -Rumi Ghosh For more details regarding the PTA please contact Devina at [email protected]

If you have any articles or reports for the newsletter, please send them to [email protected]. Many thanks.
