Dear Friends of the College, I am excited to share with each of you our Annual Report for 2013-2014. It provides you with a snapshot of the many exciting things that happened at Bellin College. This past year provided many opportunities for our students, faculty and our staff. In the fall, the College began its fifth year in our facility. I marvel at the many positive comments from our customers on the beauty and upkeep of our building and grounds. The students have definitely settled in and found their favorite places to study, unwind and enjoy a laugh or a game of volleyball outside. We have been blessed to have such a wonderful campus setting, created with the support of our donors. Bellin College applied for reaffirmation of our ten year accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) this past year. The HLC team visited our campus April 7-9 to assess the nature of the College’s mission, integrity of the organization, teaching and learning practices, evaluative methods, resources, future planning and institutional effectiveness. In July we learned we were granted another ten year accreditation status. Receiving this reaffirmation is a very significant achievement for the College, and we are excited to move forward and continue to focus on quality projects as part of our ongoing assessment.

The College’s leadership placed a large emphasis on refining the overall strategic plan for the organization this year and identified five key areas of focus: customer service, people, quality, growth and financial integrity. Each area consists of a plan and associated metrics and benchmarks. We hope our concentrated efforts across these areas of focus will elevate our customer service for all, build and strengthen relationships, set clear expectations for success, ensure financial stability and allow the College to adapt to meet the changing needs of the community, our students and our friends. I want to personally thank all of our donors and friends for your support. Bellin College is making a difference in the healthcare profession through your generous contributions. We continue to graduate excellent nurses and radiologic technologists, and are humbled by the trust and respect you place in our educational program offerings. As we look to the future, we continue to grow and expand our services to the community, region and the state. Through education, we have a better future. I hope you enjoy our view of the past year. Best Regards,

Connie J. Boerst Connie J. Boerst President/CEO

Dear Friends of Bellin College, The Bellin College Board of Trustees is pleased to share our 2013-2014 Annual Report with you. As I write this update, the Packers and Badgers are coming off of important and impressive wins in the last several weeks. The teams are on a roll. So is the team at Bellin College. We may not have a football team, but BC has a team of tremendous students, outstanding coaches (our faculty), and dedicated managers (our administration). Last year, we graduated 77 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), five Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and nine Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Science (BSRS) students. Since we converted to the BSN program in 1985 and the BSRS program in 2009, we have graduated approximately 1,400 bachelor prepared nurses and 17 bachelor prepared radiologic technologists. The vast majority of our grads are serving in Northeastern Wisconsin today, making up a large percentage of the region’s healthcare professionals. Our students are studying, practicing and executing in the field like the Packers and Badgers. We have our own Hutson Center for practice; our simulation labs. The simulation spaces include various low- and high-fidelity mannequins, including a delivering mother and infant. In the radiologic sciences portion of the lab area, there is a computed tomography (CT) simulator, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) simulator and an x-ray machine. After learning and practicing in the safety of the Bellin classrooms and labs, our students go into the field at over 85 area clinical partner locations for additional hands-on training.

Like athletes, our students need the support of their community. With over 85% of Bellin College students receiving some form of financial aid, oftentimes this support comes in the form of scholarships. The generosity and support of College friends like you is truly appreciated not just by board members and administration, but by our students: the future healthcare professionals of the region. Please take a moment to review the information and stories shared within this report. If you have the time, consider dropping by for a visit. We love to showcase our training facility and our players to the community that believes in us. I thank you for your continued support and for being a valued part of our team. Sincerely,

New Additions to the BSRS Program Big things have been happening in the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences program at Bellin College. Toshiba America Medical Systems made two major contributions to the program in 2014, with their total in-kind gifts totaling over $300,000. Toshiba donated a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) simulator valued at approximately $75,000 to be used for educating future imaging professionals this fall. The simulator will be utilized in the courses Principles of MRI and Ancillary Imaging and Cross Sectional Anatomy. It will also be used in inter-professional simulations with students and other healthcare professionals. In the spring, Toshiba donated a computed tomography (CT) simulator, and the machine has been a part of the curriculum since April. Combined, the two pieces of equipment give students an opportunity to learn how to use the technology they will one day be using in the field.

Summer Camps Over the summer, Bellin College hosted three camps for high school students entering their junior or senior years who were interested in a career in nursing or radiologic sciences. There were two separate nursing camps and one radiologic sciences camp. During both nursing camps, students had the opportunity to shadow nurses at local hospitals, visit a variety of clinical settings, experience and practice nursing skills on the Bellin College campus, and tour an emergency room and the Eagle III emergency helicopter. One camp was for commuters who live in the Green Bay Area and one was an overnight camp where participants had the opportunity to stay in the dorms on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus. This was the first year BC hosted a radiologic sciences camp, and staff members found that this offering was very well-received and attended by students interested in the field. This camp was a one-day experience that allowed campers the chance to experience hands-on activities regarding basic radiology skills, learn and practice basic caregiving, visit a variety of radiology departments at Bellin Health and discover many opportunities available within the field.

Disaster Simulation In April 2014, Bellin College students underwent a life-like disaster simulation in the laboratory space. It was one of the first simulations hosted by BC that involved students in both the BSN and BSRS programs. Students had to spring to action and enter the disaster area to locate patients, triage them and evacuate them to safety. It was an opportunity to promote interprofessional teamwork and practice skills learned in the classroom.

Snapshots of Gratitude April Jensen Bachelor of Science in Nursing Class of 2015 I’m not your typical college student. I’m what they like to call an adult learner. I’m 31, married to the man of my dreams and a mother of two daughters. I was never able to complete a college degree after graduating high school. I went to college in Idaho right after graduation, but I came back home, got a job and a year later I ended up having open heart surgery. This experience was pivotal in guiding me to pursue a nursing career. After getting married, we decided to start a family. I spent five or so years being a stay-at-home mom. I cannot express how much my two girls have changed my life and made me a better person. I chose nursing because of the many experiences I had during my open heart surgery, but also because I wanted to be a role model for my girls. I wanted to make sure my they knew that education was important to me and that success comes with hard work. A well-known heart surgeon, Russell M. Nelson, said, “Don’t be afraid to pursue your goals—even your dreams! There is no shortcut to excellence and competence. Education is the difference between wishing you could help other people and being able to help them.” It is the education I am receiving at Bellin College that will allow me to pursue my goals and dreams of becoming a nurse and eventually a nurse practitioner and providing care to rural areas of northeast Wisconsin. Many thanks need to be said to those who support and encourage students like me in our educational journey. Receiving a scholarship has been a huge blessing in my personal life. To the donors that support education at Bellin College, thank you! I will forever be grateful for your generosity and kindness. I hope to follow your example and support students just as you do. There has been no greater blessing for myself and my family than being awarded financially for hard work and dedication to education. Thank You!

“To the donors that support education at Bellin College, thank you! I will forever be grateful for your generosity and kindness.”

Eight years ago, when I was 14, my family was challenged with a life-changing experience. My mother and I were on our way home from visiting my grandpa at the nursing home. As we were about to pull into our driveway, we noticed fire trucks, police cars and ambulances surrounding my uncle’s house, which is right down the road from our house. Right away, fearing the worst, my mom said, “I hope it’s not Nick.” As we pulled up behind a long line of backed-up traffic, we saw my sister running toward our car, screaming and crying. Seeing the ThedaCare Med Flight helicopter in the neighboring field, we became increasingly aware of how serious this really was. The nightmare had begun; the very thing my mother had feared was taking place right before her eyes. My brother, Nick, 17 at the time, had been working on my uncle’s farm and was throwing all kinds of scraps from the shed onto a huge bon fire. He was tossing load by load using the skidsteer. He didn’t know there was a can full of gas in one of the loads. Instantly after tossing that load on, the blaze backfired. He panicked, jumped out of the skidsteer, and stopped, dropped and rolled. It wasn’t working, but luckily for Nick, my uncle happened to be at the farm and in yelling distance when he heard my brother’s cries for help. He grabbed my brother and did everything he could to put out the flames. This incident changed my brother’s life forever. Nick was taken by helicopter to the Burn Center in Madison. Third degree burns covered over 60 percent of his body. He went through ten skin graft surgeries in an attempt to replace the damaged skin. He was hospitalized for three months and had to endure countless physical and occupational therapies. Not only did he experience physical pain, the emotional stress was overwhelming. He was struck

with post-traumatic stress disorder, which was caused by flashbacks. He would wake up in cold sweats because he re-lived the tragedy in his nightmares. It was incredibly difficult to watch him go through this. When we look at Nick now, there isn’t that much of a change on the outside. He lost some range of motion in his right elbow, and his entire chest and right arm are skin-grafted. This incident made me realize how badly I wanted a career in the medical field. I wanted to give back because of the excellent care that was provided to my brother during his time of need. With all of the bills from my brother’s accident, my family knew they wouldn’t be able to help out as much with my tuition as they would have liked. This didn’t sway my decision though; I still had my mind set on helping others by receiving the best education. I decided I wanted to be an x-ray technologist because this is my way of giving back. When someone gets hurt or sick, I am the one aiding in an accurate diagnosis, which will help lead them to recovery. I love the feeling I get when I know I have done something positive to help someone, in any way. This is exactly what Bellin College donors are doing. The scholarships they provide do more for students like me than they could ever imagine. At the beginning of my four years, I looked at the projected tuition cost and thought to myself, “How could I possibly pay off approximately $90,000?” With a semester and a half left, I only have $20,000 in student loans to pay off rather than the $90,000 that I had originally thought. I was able to get it this low due to hard work and the generous donations made by scholarship donors. Every little bit helps and I am genuinely thankful, from the bottom of my heart for their support. Page 7

Awards for Excellence Lucyanna Hitch Award for Excellence Awarded to Carlee White, BSRS Class of May 2014 The Lucyanna Hitch Award for excellence is a tribute that recognizes one student from our graduating class of October, December or May who best exemplifies Bellin College’s values of integrity, community, caring and excellence. The College was honored to present this award to Carlee White, Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences (BSRS), class of May 2014. Carlee is a compassionate and dedicated individual who consistently received praise from her professors and clinical supervisors. One thing that distinguished Carlee from her peers was the countless volunteer hours she has given to the community. She was involved with Student Senate since her freshman year and held positions of treasurer, president elect and president. She was the first radiologic science student to become part of the Bellin College Ambassador’s Club. She was also involved with the Northern Wisconsin Area Health Education Program, Wisconsin Express, and was a student representative for the radiologic science committee. Carlee is presently employed at Bellin Health in the imaging services department. Nishioka Family Faculty Award for Excellence Awarded to Karen Van Beek, Assistant Professor of Nursing Each year a faculty member is recognized for their outstanding service to the College through the generosity of Dr. Nishioka and his family. The College presented Assistant Professor of Nursing, Karen Van Beek, with this award for her outstanding service and consistent demonstration of the College values. Karen is an energetic and enthusiastic fuclty member whom students note is an excellent role model. She is a resource to many people at the College, and students relate that she expects nothing but the best from them. Karen has taught in several courses across the traditional and 15 month programs, and she is the advisor for the IHI open school chapter at BC. She contributes to the advancement of nursing education at the College by participating in curriculum development, design and research, along with making contributions to the profession at the national level. 2014 Scholarships Endowed Scholarships

Endowed scholarships are an important resource for our students. To endow a scholarship, a gift of $25,000 is given. An endowed scholarship memorializes those who have passed away or honors a living loved one. These gifts are kept in perpetuity. Only the economic growth from the total endowed scholarship fund is used to make scholarship awards. Legacy Society The Legacy Society of Bellin College was started in 2001 to provide donors the opportunity to remember the College in their estate planning. Sometimes making gifts to the College during one’s lifetime is not possible, and a bequest is more feasible. An estate gift leaves a legacy to our students by supporting their education and making a career in nursing and radiologic sciences possible. We thank the many forward-thinking benefactors of the College whose legacies have already provided us with $1.7 million in gifts. The following Legacy Society members identified Bellin College in their planning giving: Beno Family Trust Dr. Thomas and Louvain† Beno Dr. Penelope Peacock Croghan Dr. Vera Dauffenbach & Rev.
