The Regeneration Project Interfaith Power & Light 2007 ANNUAL REPORT

A Message from our President CAN

RELIGION CHANGE THE CLIMATE?

I think so. The Interfaith Power and Light (IPL) Campaign moved into five more states in 2007 and thus with 25 state programs the movement for “a religious response to global warming” is gaining momentum and prestige. The IPL Campaign has engaged hundreds more people to put their faith into action and address the human potential for solving the problem.Through the extraordinary efforts of IPL and others, climate protection has become a priority issue for mainstream religious denominations. Our Religious Leaders Summit in San Francisco last April was instrumental in helping that to happen. It was a highlight for us to have Muslims, Jews, Christians and Buddhists stand in solidarity and in agreement that the moral voice of religion can and must bring about the change that needs to happen to save creation. We have entered into dialogue with scientists and policy makers at a high level, giving us a leadership role not imaginable just five years ago.

Moving Forward A Major Growth Year We are proud to report that we’ve enjoyed a very successful year. In fact, managing our success has been our greatest challenge. More and more faith groups and congregations are waking up to the threat of global warming and realizing their responsibility to play a major role in addressing this ecological and moral crisis. Our growth and momentum continue to build and Interfaith Power and Light is now firmly established as the “go-to” organization on this issue for the faith community. As a result, we are receiving a multitude of requests and invitations for affiliation, support, and involvement from all quarters. All this added up to make 2007 a major growth year for us. To keep up with the demand for our services, we added new state affiliates, new staff, and new programs.

New States In 2007, our Interfaith Power and Light affiliated network experienced tremendous growth, adding five new state programs: Hawaii, Kentucky, Ohio, Rhode Island and Utah for a total of 25. Prospective new state affiliates are approaching us regularly as word of our campaign grows and the religious response to global warming builds.

New Staff In 2007, we added three new staff positions including an executive director, a development director, and an online communications manager. These new staff positions reflect our commitment to building the organizational infrastructure needed to support our rapid growth and the demand for our program. In addition, we began a strategic planning process to steer our development over the next five years.

New Programs ShopIPL.org, an online energy efficiency store was launched this year with a grant from the EPA. This website, specifically geared to congregations, offers a discount to our congregational members and their congregants. And to sweeten the pot further, a portion of each sale goes back to the state IPL, helping states grow and diversify their revenues. Expanded Online Capacity: Our new online software allows our members to send messages to their elected representatives in support of important policy priorities like clean energy and capping greenhouse gas emissions with the click of a mouse. Our national email list includes 20,000 people from the faith community in all 50 states. In 2007, our action alerts generated thousands of letters to help pass the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards (CAFÉ) – the first time Congress increased fuel economy in three decades.

IPL Mission The mission of the Interfaith Power and Light Campaign is to be faithful stewards of creation by responding to global warming through the promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. This campaign intends to protect the earth’s ecosystems, safeguard human health, and ensure sufficient, sustainable energy for all.

Our Interfaith Power & Light Affiliated N Here’s a sampling of some of the many programs we’ve initiated across the nation.

Cool Congregations in Iowa and Beyond Developed by Iowa IPL, Cool Congregations is an innovative energy stewardship program that has now become a signature project throughout our affiliated network. It is focused on congregational households’ energy consumption patterns, including calculation of carbon dioxide emissions, and exploring and selecting energy efficient practices to reduce that energy use. The program encourages households to take up a year-long effort to reduce their carbon footprint by at least 10%. Think of it as an energy ‘tithe’.

Sister Pat Nagle of Oregon IPL attended the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali as a representative of Interfaith Power and Light and the World Council of Churches, presenting our message of the moral imperative to fight global warming on an international stage.

Minnesota Oregon

Interfaith Diversity in Utah Utah IPL understands the power of working together. One of our newest IPL affiliates, Utah has already garnered the support of a diverse group of faith communities, including Methodist, Episcopalian, Mormon LDS, Unitarian, Jewish, UCC, Lutheran, Catholic, Muslim, Quaker and Mennonite.

California Clergy Advocate for Global Warming Policy On September 5th, California IPL brought 12 clergy and religious representatives to Sacramento for a Global Warming Advocacy Day in the state capitol. With 23 meetings packed into a single day, CIPL promoted a bill to provide incentives for residential solar water systems, a companion to the “Million Solar Roofs” law that was passed last year, as well as other important legislation addressing smart growth and green building standards.

2007 Annual IPL Leader Conference Each year, IPL leaders come together for training, to lay groundwork for regional and national collaborations and to share best practices. In July, the annual conference took place in Loveland, Colorado, outside of Denver. Hunter Lovins, from Natural Capitalism, was a keynote speaker.

In the News

Network Michigan IPL Spearheads Online Energy Efficiency Store Michigan IPL’s pioneering online shopping cart was the springboard for our national web-store specializing in energy efficient products, tailored specifically to congregations’ needs. Collaboration between our IPLs in Michigan, Illinois, Georgia, Greater Washington, Oregon and Texas resulted in the launch of www.ShopIPL.org, which offers a variety of Energy Star rated products, including lighting. This innovative program offers a discount to our members while also generating revenue for state affiliates.

Vermont IPL volunteer Ron McGarvey, a retired energy auditor, travels throughout the state, performing free audits for congregations. His recommendations often result in significant cost and energy saving improvements to the facilities. But it’s not just dollar signs that inspire. “If we’re really going to have a long-term effect on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions,” he said, “people have to be motivated by more than just, ‘how much money am I going to save?’ You do it because it’s the right thing.” Since the launch of the program,Vermont IPL has conducted audits of over 80 houses of worship.

Fighting Coal Plants in North Carolina North Carolina IPL played a key role in stopping the construction of one of two proposed coal-fired power plants, turning out half of the people who testified in Raleigh at the annual NC Utilities Commission public hearing in January. North Carolina IPL members also testified before the NC Division of Air Quality and helped to organize additional citizens’ hearings in three metropolitan areas. Prior to 2007, public participation in these hearings was rare, and for people to speak from the faith perspective was, perhaps, without precedent. North Carolina IPL remains vigilant and continues its campaign against the other proposed plant, near Charlotte.

Accolades The Rev. Sally Bingham was featured in a list of the Top 15 Green Religious Leaders. The 2007 U.S. EPA Climate Protection Award was presented to the Rev. Sally Bingham and the IPL Campaign acknowledging leadership, innovation, dedication and achievements in climate protection.

“Today we stand together as a religious force for change.” InApril,The Regeneration Project hosted a Climate Summit for 14 Protestant,Catholic,Evangelical, Jewish, and Muslim national leaders. The result was a declaration on the moral responsibility of the U.S. Government to address global warming, later signed by 600 more clergy and denominational leaders. The leaders also committed to educate and mobilize their constituencies on the issue. Subsequently, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church testified to the U.S. Senate using the information gathered at our summit.

An Interfaith Declaration on the Moral Responsibility of the U.S. Gover nment to Address Global Warming

T

his is an historic moment when Jews, Christians, and Muslims stand together in solidarity with a shared sense of moral purpose on global warming. We accept the overwhelming scientific evidence which forecasts extreme consequences for the Earth and all its inhabitants if we fail to act. We support each other as we take leadership in our distinctive religions to address this challenge to all of humankind. Each of our diverse traditions has a common concern for creation. The Hebrew Bible calls us to “till and to keep” the garden. The Koran declares that God created the Earth in balance, and that human beings are the trustees of creation. Christians, too, ar e challenged to be stewards of the garden and to love our neighbors. All of our traditions call us to ser ve and protect the poor and vulnerable. And it is the world’s poor, who contribute the least to this problem, who will suffer the most from global warming. Our Earth is in great peril. We cannot risk the consequences of inaction. Recognizing that human beings are largely responsible for creating this problem we stand together as brothers and sisters dedicated to finding solutions. Global warming is not just a political and economic issue. It is a moral and spiritual issue that calls for leadership fr om faith communities. Ther efore, we are mobilizing a religious force that will persuade our legislators to take immediate action to curb greenhouse gases. We believe that placing science-based, mandatory limits on greenhouse emissions is one of the most effective ways to reverse the warming trend. These limits can be achieved in ways that will stimulate the economy, encourage technological innovation, and lift up the poor. We can begin by investing in renewable energy, embracing an ethic of conservation, and prioritizing a healthy environment. Today we stand together as a religious force for change. We have seen the truth and must declare it. Global warming is real, it is human-induced, and we have the r esponsibility to act. W e will work together in an historic ef fort to pave the way for a cultural change in America. And while recognizing our differences, we agree on a call to action. We stand together with a shared purpose: a reverence for life. The Most Rev. Dr . Katharine Jef ferts Schori Presiding Bishop The Episcopal Church
