Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© Drama with music for Family Bible Hour Christmas Concert Time: 90 minutes Cast size: approx. 60 (can be modified to use more or less than this number) Theme: This drama tells of a Church Christmas Concert set in the year 1941. It is written in a segmented format in order that the individual segments may be self-standing. This allows for individual, small group practices and permits, where necessary, that certain portions be eliminated due to time or number of performers available. In order to tie the entire production together, two threads run through the entire production. These are: - the rehearsal and performance of "The Three Wise Men". In this on-going segment three young people are "volunteered" to play the three Wise Men in the concert. They procrastinate and complain until sharp words from the janitor finally show them the real reason for witnessing. - the realities of war are kept as a thread running through the program as families and friends deal with having loved ones and neighbours serving overseas in the war effort. Cast: All children from various Family Bible Hour classes Brad the janitor - can be any age from late teen to senior Preacher Jenkins - can be any age from late teen to senior Mother - middle age

Hearts on Fire Quartet (late teenagers): Peter Jon Colin Trevor The Three Wise Men - early or pre-teens (male or female, if possible one girl): Deanna (Balthazar) Kelvin (Gaspar) Daniel (Melchior) Joy In The Morning Monologue: Actress - (mid to late teens) Female singer - any age Props: (See Staging) Little is required in the way of props. Signs are needed for the younger classes showing the individual letters in their recitations.

Page 1

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© Lighting: Bright lighting is required when the children's groups perform. For all other segments lighting should be lower level. For lighting for monologue see specific directions in that section of the script. Costumes: Costumes should be of from the early 1940's, with longer dresses for girls, bib overalls for boys, black suit with white shirt and "preacher's collar" for the preacher. Brad the janitor has bib overalls and a cap. Three Wise Men require robes and crowns as befit kings of that era. Shepherds and angels dressed appropriately. Shepherds have beards.

Sound: Actress in monologue needs lapel mike, singer a hand-held mike. All children should speak directly into standing mike or a hand-held mike held by teacher or assistant. All others will either be un-miked or use area mikes. Ensure that all mikes are hidden as much as possible. Staging: The main prop will be the stage which, at the opening will be in the final stages of construction. This could simply be some boards laid on top of the existing stage, or it could be a stage built 18" to 24" high, and as large as space permits. Along the front will be the provision to have a wire strung across on which quilts will be hung for stage curtains. On the walls have "Buy War Bonds" posters, pictures and materials which will set the time frame for the drama. For the monologue have a background of flats painted black. Have all lines for the younger children's classes on slides or overheads, project them on screen or back wall as children say these lines. In this way, if lines are low volume, or forgotten, audience will get the meaning. Script: Drama opens with Brad coming on stage, moves some boards around, moves off to a position at Downstage Left. As voices are heard Brad steps back into shadows, (arrange that he can still be seen by audience, leave the impression that he can't be seen by the other actors as they come in). The voices of Deanna, Daniel and Kelvin will be heard from the foyer. At point noted, they come into the sanctuary through back doors. Voices: Daniel:

Look you guys! Miz Johnson expects us to have our lines memorized for the church Christmas Concert, for Pete's sake. She'll be really mad if she finds out that we haven't!

Kelvin:

I have half a mind to tell Miz Johnson that I don't want to do this play. And I'm going to tell her what I think of this beard too!

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 2

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© Daniel:

Kelvin, you're always grouching about the beard. We are supposed to be the Wise Men, for Pete's sake. Beards and Wise Men. They go together like, like, . . . well, . . . they just go together, OK? What's so bad about the beards anyways, for Pete's sake?

Kelvin:

What's so bad about the beards? You are asking me what's so bad about these beards? Well, I shall tell you what's so bad about these beards! They are hot, yes, and they are itchy, and what's more, they stink, that's what! Do you get the message, Daniel? And do you realize that we shall have to stay on stage for the who Christmas concert. By the time we're finished, these beards will be positively obnoxious. Now, then. Have I made my feelings quite clear to you, Daniel? Have I given you a very clear indication of just exactly what's wrong with the stupid beards, Daniel?

Deanna:

Well, what I can't figure out is why we're doing this anyways! I mean, what's the big deal, why is it life or death that there always needs to be Wise Men in every dumb concert, every dumb year?

Three enter sanctuary from rear doors, deliver lines as they walk to the front. Daniel:

But it's the Christmas story for Pete's sake! There's always Wise Men in the Christmas story. You know that! Now come on you two, let's get at it, for Pete's sake! Where's your scripts? We might as well go through our lines until Miz Johnson gets here, for Pete's sake!

Deanna:

Since when are you the big boss over this play, Daniel? Have you appointed yourself the director or something? Don't tell me, Mr. John Ford, right? You directed How Green Was My Valley, the best movie of this year, 1941, right? Now 20th Century-Fox sent you to head up this Church Christmas concert, right?

Daniel:

Look, for Pete's sake! All I'm saying is, you guys are goofing off, for Pete's sake! We've got a play to get ready for. We're supposed to be the Three Wise Men, and we're acting like the Three Stooges, for Pete's sake!

Kelvin:

Just keep your shirt on, Daniel! Look, we might as well do it, Deanna, or we'll never get any peace from, . . . from . . Willy Shakespeare here! Where's our lines? OK, here now, you have the first line Deanna.

All three pick up pages, start to read. Deanna:

I want to tell you of happenings of which we were proud participants. I am Balthazar, a member of the Zoroastrian priestly caste of Persia, in the Orient. We were well known as teachers, priests, physicians, astrologers, seers, interpreters of dreams, augers, soothsayers; some called us Wise Men. Some of our number had noted the rising of a remarkable star. This discovery initiated a chain of events

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 3

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© which will live forever in my mind, and in that of my two friends and companions, Gaspar and Melchior. Kelvin:

Yes dear Balthazar, I, Gaspar, had for many years been studying ancient writings. Many of these writings spoke of a coming king of the Jewish nation, a king sometimes referred to as the Messiah. These ancient writings often spoke of a star which was to be a sign of the king's coming. I knew not precisely what the meaning of this star might be. So I called on the expertise of my friend Melchior, a respected astrologer.

Daniel:

When Gaspar spoke to me of this matter I was overwhelmed by the enormity of the search we were about to undertake. It was obvious that in following this star we would be travelling extensively. We would require professional assistance in this area. Instantly I thought of an acquaintance, Balthazar, a renowned traveler, an organizer of camel trains, a man who knew the lands to the west as most men knew the backs of their hands.

Deanna:

And so it was that we found ourselves and our entourage following a bright star. Many of my friends, travellers on these roads, believed we had taken leave of our senses. How, they asked, was it that we would leave all behind, following a star, we knew not where?

Kelvin:

For ages, it seemed, we followed the star, never coming any closer to it's source. And then as we approached Jerusalem the star seemed to gain in intensity. Up ahead shone the mighty palace of King Herod. Aha, I thought! Of course! How appropriate, the King of the Jews, born in the most luxurious palace in Jerusalem. So we made haste to the court of Herod, enquiring of him his knowledge of this happening.

Daniel:

My recounting of the phenomenon of the star seemed to disturb Herod greatly, and all the leaders of the Jerusalem community with him. Herod called a meeting of all the Jewish religious leaders. Herod asked these leaders if they knew where this Messiah might be born.

Kelvin:

It was then that the words of the prophet Micah came back to me, "O little town of Bethlehem, you are not just an unimportant little Judean village. For a Governor shall rise from you, to rule my people Israel". Of course! How could I have overlooked this oft-read ancient writing?

Deanna:

In a meeting with Herod and his advisers we were asked to proceed with haste to Bethlehem. Herod requested that we inform him when the Babe was found, that Herod might also pay his respects. His tone of voice and the secretive glances between Herod and his advisers made me question their sudden interest.

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 4

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© Daniel:

Leaving Jerusalem, we set out those few miles to Bethlehem. My heart near burst within my chest as there, immediately over the little town of Bethlehem, shone the star which we had followed those many miles.

Kelvin:

There before us was a stable, from within came a radiant glow. Entering in we found a baby and his mother. And we fell to the earthen floor, overcome with feelings of adoration. And with great humility I gave my gift of chrusos (pronounce khroo-sos'), gold.

Deanna:

And libanos (pronounce lib'-an-os), frankincense.

Daniel:

And smurna (pronounce smoor'-nah), myrrh.

Kelvin:

In a dream I was warned that we must not return to Herod.

Deanna:

And so, calling on the lessons of my many years of travel, I found a secret route which safely bypassed Jerusalem.

Daniel:

And we returned to our own eastern lands, with this marvelous story in our minds, and the love for this tiny Babe in our hearts.

Actors put sheets down. Kelvin:

I guess the story is OK, but really, do we need to tell this story every year. I mean, there's nothing new, is there?

Deanna:

Oh look, there's Miz Johnson in the Sunday School room, let's go tell her we've been practicing for an hour already. Maybe she'll let us go home now.

Actors leave stage area. Brad comes on stage out from the shadows, looks at the three actors as they leave the stage Brad:

Nothing new? How could they speak the words of that lovely story without seeing the newness that jumps from the words on the page? How could they possibly miss it? Christian kids! They have so much religion in their minds and so little of the love of Jesus in their hearts! Sad, really sad, isn't it? Oh well, I have work to do.

Brad hammers the last nails in the stage. Brad:

There! Solid as a rock! Best stage we've ever had for a Christmas concert at Elm Street Church. In spite of the attitudes of those three kids, it should be a great service.

Trevor , Colin, Peter and Jon carry the quilts, frame and wire for the curtains on stage. Peter:

So, Jon, did Miz Johnson get you to take a part in the concert?

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 5

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert©

Jon:

No chance! I said I didn't want to be in her concert!

Colin:

Oh Jon, that's too bad! I mean, after all, you're just a natural Gary Cooper!

Trevor:

Yeh, Jon. Coop, that's you! I can just see you onstage with your leading lady. Joooody, Joooody, Joooody!

Brad:

Look you guys. Do I get a hand here or not. How be if you guys help out just a little. Anyways, you sound more like Abbott and Costello than Gary Cooper! Maybe if you spend a little more time getting ready and a little less time kibitzing we just might be finished by the time everyone gets here. Remember, it's Christmas 1941, it would be nice if we could be ready before 1942!

Colin:

Yeh, there's a war going on in Europe, let's be Brad's "allies" and get on with it, okay?

Peter:

A war going on, Colin? How would you know? Your family got excused from enlisting so's they could "serve in the local war effort"! Local war effort! Your father had friends in the government, that's all! Most of us send our family over there fighting for your freedom while others hide behind their political buddies!

Trevor:

Sorry, Peter. Have you heard from your brother lately?

Peter:

Heard? Oh, yeh, we've heard alright! Letter said David was, "missing in action". Who knows, a captive in some Nazi work camp, or, or, maybe he's, he's d . d. . . who knows?

Colin:

Sorry, Peter, I didn't mean, like I forgot, that was very insensitive of me.

Jon:

Must be tough on your folks, Peter. How's your Momma holding up?

Peter:

Momma? Momma tries to hide it from the little kids. Lawrence and Milly don't really understand what's going on, anyways. But even though he doesn't show it, I think it's toughest on Pop. You know my Pop. He's really quiet and that, but deep down I know he's dying a little bit more every day. I happen to know that Pop went down to the Army Recruitment Center and tried to enlist. They wouldn't take him though, his bad eyes I guess. They offered Pop latrine duty. I expect my Pop let them know right quick that emptying toilets wasn't how he planned to fight a war!

Trevor:

Is there something we can do Peter?

Peter:

Do? You do whatever you want, but next month when I turn 18 I'm outa here, I'm gonna sign up. I'll show those Nazis a thing or two. Maybe I'll even find David, that is, if he's still, still . . . .

Page 6

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© Brad clears throat: Look you guys, are you gonna stand around all day? The church Christmas Concert'll be startin' in a few minutes and we're not ready. Jon:

OK, let's string the curtains for the stage. Colin, give me a hand with this line, hook it over there. And be careful, this is my Momma's clothesline. She'll skin me alive if it comes back with a kink in it!

Trevor:

You hold on to this end of the quilt Peter, I'll pin this end up.

Brad:

Here comes some people, they're coming into church already. I thought you four were s'posed to be singin' as people came in.

Colin:

OK, let's go, and, Peter, I'm sorry, really sorry for being so insensitive. Please, forgive me.

Peter:

Forget it, it's OK, I guess it's just been a bad day for me. The news of Pearl Harbor last week and then the letter about David, it's been a bad week, I guess. Oh, here comes Preacher Jenkins.

Preacher comes on stage. Preacher:

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Welcome to our 1941 Church Christmas concert. It's cold outside, but we've put extra wood in the furnace. Some of you have brought automobiles, we'll excuse you from time to time as you run outside to warm them up. So let's sit back as the Sunday School ministers to us tonight. First though, please bow with me as we open in a word of prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, we pray that tonight we will learn just a little bit more of Your love for us. Be with each child tonight as they minister to us. And Lord, we hold up our dear ones who are far away on foreign soil tonight, fighting for liberty in places like France, and Britain, the Aleutian Islands, Africa, wherever they are, Lord. Be with them Lord, strengthen them, bring them home soon we pray. Be with those who have lost loved ones in the fighting Lord. In those times when the pain seems more than we can bear, help us to place our trust in You. We pray all these things in your precious name, Lord. Amen. Now, we've asked four of our senior boys if they'll lead us in an opening carol. Stand with us and feel free to sing along, please!

Hearts on Fire sing a cappella It Came Upon A Midnight Clear As carol ends, Mother, who was sitting in audience, screams out: Peace on earth? How can you sing of peace? (Comes on stage) Will there really ever be peace again? How can there be peace when, somewhere, a million miles from home, my little boy is being shot at with real bullets? War is real. Bullets are real. But peace, I'm not so sure that peace will ever be real again. Peter comes, tries to comfort Mother: Come Momma. It's alright. We'll hear from David soon, I just know we will. We've prayed, and we've put it in God's hands. It's up to Him now. Mother:

But, Peter, he's only a little boy! He's only eighteen! He's my little boy! Oh please God, please! Bring my little boy home to me! Please! Why do they have to fight wars with little boys? Why can't they leave little boys with their mothers who love them? It's not fair! It's not fair!

Peter:

Come, Momma. Let's go home. We'll drop by the post office. Maybe there'll be a letter.

Mother:

A letter? You know how I dread a letter from the government. One that says, "We regret to inform you that your son . . ." When we got that letter from the government last month I was scared to open it. When I finally got up the courage to tear it open I was overjoyed to see that it was only a letter telling us that we owed more taxes!

Peter:

It's all right, Momma. Let's go home.

Peter and Mother exit Downstage Right Preacher:

As you all likely know, David is missing in action in France right now. Our prayers go out to this family, and all others who are suffering. Now we have the Grade 1 and 2 class who have a special presentation for us.

Grade 1 and 2 come on stage, (from rear if possible), recite and then sing a carol. Hearts on Fire open the curtains, stand to the sides of the stage as children perform, close curtains afterwards. As children say their lines, project those lines on back wall or screen in order that, if lines are low volume or forgotten, the audience will get the meaning. Children hold up placards showing their letter as they give their lines. If needed, lines could be printed on back of each placard. This would reduce the need for prompting. Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© E - for Everlasting, Jesus, here with us today S - is for the Stable, with oxen and hay E - is for Emmanuel, born for us that day N - is the New star that shone so bright C - for the Christ Child born that night E - God's great gift of Eternal love, Given through Jesus, Who came from above. All: We love You Jesus. Sing a carol

Preacher:

Thank you, children, for that message. Remember please that these children are not here tonight to entertain. They are here to tell us the story of the miracle of Christmas, the miracle that first happened almost 2,000 years ago. The miracle that has continued each and every day since. We will now have the Grade 3 and 4 class to come to minister to us.

Grade 3 & 4 come on stage, (from rear if possible), recite and then sing a carol. A blank placard might separate the two words. If needed, lines could be printed on back of each placard. This would reduce the need for prompting. Note - If there are insufficient number of children, some of the more outgoing children, (or perhaps the oldest) will need to have a letter in each hand and deliver two parts.

Kelvin, Deanna and Daniel enter from Downstage Right. Brad, (broom in hand), enters from Downstage Left. Daniel:

That was a good practice for our play about the Three Wise Men! Wasn't it fun?

Deanna:

Fun? You call this fun? Miz Johnson expects us to remember all this memorization!

Daniel:

For Pete's sake, think about it Deanna! Memorization! Memory work. Memory. Get it?

Kelvin:

Yeh, and I still hate this beard!

Brad:

For Pete's sake, you guys make me sick. Griping and complaining about memorizing lines, wearing beards, whatever! You really don't know what witnessing is all about, do you?

Daniel:

Witnessing? I don't understand. Who's witnessing?

Deanna:

Yeh, we're not witnessing. We're just saying lines.

Brad:

You are absolutely right, you are only saying lines. I'm sure that none of you have really read the lines to understand what the words are saying.

Kelvin:

Saying? You mean the words are supposed to say something?

Brad:

Certainly the words are supposed to say something! Tell me, why are you doing this Christmas concert anyways?

Deanna:

Cause Miz Johnson said we had to.

Brad:

Nonsense! You are doing this to spread the good news of the salvation of Jesus Christ. You are doing this for the Christians who need to be constantly reminded of the old, old story which will always be fresh and new and exciting. And you are doing the concert for those who have never yet heard the clear and compelling facts of Jesus' love. That's why you're here, and don't you ever forget it! You know, you people who have been born into Christian homes tend to sometimes forget that the words you are saying in that play are straight out of God's word! Oh sure, they're all modern and fancy, personally I like it better when we use the good old King James Version words, but nonetheless those words are the words of God! This isn't a time to entertain all your folks, and it isn't a time to show the community how good you

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 12

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© are at speaking in front of people! Figure it out you guys! You are preaching at the concert, that's what you're doing! Daniel:

Preaching? Us? Preacher Jerkins preaches. Not us!

Brad:

And that's where you are dead wrong! Each Christian has the power and the opportunity and the duty to preach the word. Now I'm going to tell you that I'm getting real fed up with you guys, with your lack of commitment to spread the word of God, with your half-hearted efforts at learning and memorizing your parts. And I'm not going to put up with it, do you hear me? Now I don't want to hear one more word about memorizing, or beards or, . . or . . . anything else for that matter! All I want from the three of you is to stop your belly-aching, get busy and get ministering the word of God! And that's my final word on it, OK? Now then, I've got work to do, getting ready for the concert!

Brad walks off stage, three actors watch him leave a look of disbelief on their faces. Deanna:

Well I never! He's not our parent, he's not our teacher! Just exactly who is he, telling us what to do?

Daniel:

I'd say that he's a concerned Christian, that's who. And, for Pete's sake, he's right in everything he said.

Kelvin:

So maybe he's right. That doesn't mean he has the right to talk to us that way.

Daniel:

Look Kelvin, Deanna! We were wrong, we were out of line, we haven't been working at this concert. Now Brad was right, we are preaching at the concert. I don't want to hear another word about it! Let's go and start really learning and practicing our parts, for Pete's sake!

Deanna:

Yes sir!

Kelvin:

Calm down, we're with you! I guess the beards aren't really that awful bad.

Three actors leave stage. Preacher:

We've now got our Grade 5 and 6 Boys who have a really excellent story to tell. Listen, please.

Grade 5 & 6 Boys come on stage, (from rear if possible). Hearts on Fire open the curtains, stand to the sides of the stage as children perform, close curtains afterwards. The Presence of Angels - Boys Grade 5 & 6 Shepherds enter from rear doors of sanctuary in great excitement. This high level of excitement must be carried throughout the main portion of the presentation. Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Shepherd 1:

At first I wasn't sure what it was. As we were resting on the ground, looking up into the heavens, they looked like clouds, high above us, moving as clouds often do. Yes, yes, and then came the sound!

Shepherd 2:

I'm not sure what first drew my close attention. Maybe it was the sound, or perhaps the bright, bright starlight. In my many years as a shepherd I had seen bright stars, but nothing like this!

Shepherd 3:

Well, for me it was the sound. While tending the temple flocks I had often heard the songs of storm and the gentle sigh of an evening breeze. But never had I heard such music as from those skies on that hallowed night. With fearful eyes shaded and protected by an unsure outstretched hand, I caught sight of the impossible - a band of angels!

Shepherd 4:

My fear and apprehension caused my trembling knees to collapse beneath me, bringing me to the cold damp soil of the valley floor below Bethlehem. Yet my soul in exaltation stirred within me - for I sensed in the words of the heavenly chorus, the age-old promise spoken of in the word of God.

Shepherd 5:

"Fear not," the angels proclaimed, and my silent fear dissolved, like dew in the morning light. "For a holy message of joy is what we bring to you."

Shepherd 6:

A holy message? Would not a holy message be delivered to the temple in Jerusalem, to the priests and holy men in our community? But we are only shepherds, poor and held in low esteem by our people. Why would a holy message come to us?

Shepherd 1:

We had always been good shepherds; faithful in watching over the temple sheep which were committed to our care. It was unthinkable that we would even consider leaving these sheep to the ravages of predators and thieves. Yet, now the message of the angels left no doubt - only one thing was important - that the Babe be found! And quickly!

At this point agitation of the actors gives way to peace, calmer tones, a slower pace Shepherd 2:

And we found Him. Kneeling by his cradle in the stillness of that stable, deep joy filled my soul - and a peace, like gentle ointment soothed me.

Shepherd 3:

The Babe, so serene in sleep. The mother, so demure in her quiet confidence. The father, so captive in the enormity of his task at hand. The situation, so moving in it's intensity.

Shepherd 4:

The challenge of God's angels, clear, strong, compelling, left only one possible response - to tell all who would listen of the wonderful news of His coming.

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 14

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© (With intensity) Shepherd 5:

This message we now pass to your ears: "Hear and know what we now tell you Christ is born in Bethlehem! Peace on earth has come from heaven - Good will to all men!"

Shepherd 6:

No more do we need to wait and pray for the coming of the Messiah. He is here! He is here! Praise God!

Shepherd 1:

Angels holy, dressed in white, sing a song not heard before:

Shepherd 2:

"Christ the Lord is born today; He will reign forevermore!"

Shepherd 3:

Gently now, o'er all the earth, angels bring the message down,

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© Joy Cometh In The Morning - Monologue Theme: This drama was written to explore the human feelings which had to cross Mary's mind as she carried her unborn son. While it is entirely true that Mary had benefit of both angelic visits and a servant heart, still she had to be sufficiently human to have concerns, even second thoughts. In this drama the actress begins by playing the role of Mary, complete with period costume. At the conclusion of Part 1 of this monologue a female singer sings Breath of Heaven, (Mary's Song), Words and Music by Chris Eaton and Amy Grant, (Copyright 19692 Closeau Music Ltd. / Age to Age Music, Inc. (ASCAP), adm by Reunion Music Group, Inc. As the song is sung actress moves slowly about Center Stage, reacts to words of the song. At the conclusion of the song, actress, while on stage, removes the costume to reveal contemporary apparel. She goes immediately into Part 2 of monologue where she talks about the pressures, concerns and problems of her current day preparation for motherhood. Cast: Mary - actress Female singer If possible, singer should be on an elevated stage at Upper Stage Center. Actress performs on the regular (lower) stage level. Lighting: Use a low level of lighting centralized at Center Stage for actress, ensure that she does not walk out of the lighted area. For singer use a single sharp spot to illuminate only her upper body. Costumes: Mary in Part 1 will have period costume. In Part 2, (and for singer), contemporary costumes will be used.

Sound: Use a lapel mike for Mary, hand-held mike for singer. Staging: Through the use of black flats, create a feeling of solitude around actor and singer. Script: .

It has been a long day, Father. Today I went to the market. I left home with great feelings of love in my heart. So thankful that I might choose the best of produce and essentials for my new husband Joseph. So grateful that God had provided a husband,

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 17

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© one who loved me, Mary, the poor peasant girl. So overwhelmed that God had so richly blessed me with this opportunity to give birth to, to Him! But in the marketplace my joy soon turned to sorrow and shame as the glances, the whispers rubbed rawness once again. No longer able to endure this thinly veiled feeling of displeasure from my neighbours, with my market basket still half empty, I hurried home to one the who does not doubt, nor second-guess, nor condemn. At the gate I paused to listen to his mallet, a steady cadence, implying certainty as it struck home; to his rasp, a soothing, muted symphony. My husband, the carpenter. A noble profession, a proud profession. But, some said, not the wisest career choice in this, a land where trees, and thereby wood, is scarce to the point of rare. No matter; to be a carpenter was my husband's choice, and in his labor I would glory. Tonight I lie beside my Joseph and listen to his regular breathing, as sleep removes the cares of his busy day. Thank you, dear God, for Joseph. The one who cared, who understood, the one who stood by me when all friends and neighbors berated, worse, ignored me. Truly, even Joseph had problems comprehending. In my first month he did turn away from me, he did doubt. But to his credit he listened as the angel of God brought reassurance. Now he sleeps the dark night through while I lie here by his side, my mind spinning as I try to comprehend the magnitude of the blessing, in some ways the curse, that has been thrust upon my young life. Now as the dark and dreary night gives forth it's first hint of a new day, I search both my mind and the eastern sky, that somehow I might make sense of this happening. A happening of which I was to play a willing yet somehow unconscious role. It was as though I was sitting back, watching as the role was played out. Me, Mary, a mere bit part player in the most significant happening in all of history. Central to the event, yet, somehow, a mere observer. Dear Lord, make me worthy of the task which lies ahead for me. I recall the visit which I made with my cousin, how I learned that in Elizabeth's old age she was to give birth. I felt the leaping of this son of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Now I feel the movement of my own wee one and I marvel at the promise that I bear. I pray Lord that you will use this unworthy vessel to bear your Son into a world which so desperately needs your healing touch. Bless me and my beloved husband, that we might not be deficient in the task which lies ahead. We have talked Lord, and we realize that only as a result of Your guiding and power can we be equal to the task. You have promised to guide, and now God, I shall hold to your promise. For as sure as is the weeping of the night, so comes the joy of the morning. Be with me, my God, and be with my husband. Thank You for providing Joseph as the keeper of Your Son. Singer sings Breath of Heaven as actress reacts to words. At close of song, actress slowly begins to remove costume, talking and moving about stage as she does so.

Jesus, I grow closer to You as I think of Your coming to this earth as a tiny baby. I identify with You and Your dear mother as I too, for the first time, go through the process of becoming a mother. Lord Jesus, today within my body there grows a person, a child. A child to be born during the Christmas season. My first child! How exciting! How scary! How new! And, since it is the Christmas season, I was wondering, dear Lord, wondering about what it was like for Your mother, back before that first Christmas. Am I encountering the same joys and fears and worries and triumphs as did Your mother? I find myself ill at ease, the nagging doubt that I will be equal to the task of bringing up a child as I must. After all, Jesus, it isn't easy for a kid growing up in today's world. I'm worried Lord. Will my child be born, . . well, will he be, perfect. I can't get over how, with the millions and millions of children born, that virtually all are born entirely perfect. Lord, I so want that my child be perfect. And, that makes me wonder, what about Mary? Did Mary have the same thoughts, the same doubts, the same concerns. I do not wish to be sacrilegious, Jesus, but, I can't keep my mind from wondering about the human worries which must have, in the middle of the night, caused her concern. Although I realize that Mary was visited by angels, although she knew that this child was God, still, during the time when she carried You within her body, when You were about to be born, born in that manger, so long ago and far away, did she worry about whether You would be born perfect. Oh, I know she was visited by angels who told of Your coming greatness. This would give her assurance. But, Lord, she after all was human, she must have had some concerns, just as I now do. When You were born did she count Your fingers and toes, relieved to find ten plus ten, pressing a mother's kisses on each one? Did she sing to You, Jesus, did she coo those little words that only babies and their moms understand? And when she wrapped Your tiny body, and held You safe and warm, did she worry about Your future, just as I worry for the future of my unborn child? Jesus, did the shadow of a cross ever darken her joyful face as she gazed down into your eyes? In that manger, in that Bethlehem stable, so long ago was born love. Love which would last for as long as time itself. But that love came to compete with the hatred and tyranny which to this day exists, and intensifies, and expands with the passing of time. It is the sweet suffering of all mothers to know of pain at birth. But You Lord, who deserved to come in majesty and live in splendor, became the Prince of Peace who wore thorns instead of a crown. You, Who came to seek and to save, ended Your earthly life in the same painfilled way in which You entered. You completed Your lonely, suffering journey as You rewrote history and reinforced the making of the earth. Lord Jesus, be with me and with this new life within me. Sustain both of us that we might both live and serve in Your honor. I very much feel an unworthy vessel, seeking to bring life and love and understanding to another human being. And, I can't help but wonder if Mary felt concern as do I.

Kelvin, Deanna and Daniel come on stage to perform The Three Wise Men Deanna:

I want to tell you of happenings of which we were proud participants. I am Balthazar, a member of the Zoroastrian priestly caste of Persia, in the Orient. We were noted as teachers, priests, physicians, astrologers, seers, interpreters of dreams, augers, soothsayers; some called us Wise Men. Some of our number had noted the rising of a remarkable star. This dicovery initiated a chain of events which will live forever in my mind, and in that of my two friends and companions, Gaspar and Melchior.

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© ©Copyright DramaShare® 1995

Page 20

Old Fashioned Christmas Concert© Kelvin:

It was then that the words of the prophet Micah came back to me, "O little town of Bethlehem, you are not just an unimportant little Judean village. For a Governor shall rise from you, to rule my people Israel". Of course! How could I have overlooked this oft-read ancient writing?

Deanna:

In a meeting with Herod and his advisers we were asked to proceed with haste to Bethlehem. Herod requested that we inform him when the Babe was found, that Herod might also pay his respects. His tone of voice and the secretive glances between Herod and his advisers made me question their sudden interest.
