2010-11 Specialized Schools Annual Education Report August 18, 2011 Dear Parents and Community Members: We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for the Alexander Elementary School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Mr. Jeff Petterson for assistance. The Annual Education Report is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site www.theadrianmaples.com and go to the Alexander School link or you may review a copy from the principal’s office at your child’s school. For 2010-2011, Alexander Elementary School made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve. SPECIALIZED SCHOOL INFORMATION The students of ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS receive special education services through the Lenawee Intermediate School District (LISD). In addition to the specialized schools, students receive diagnostic testing, school psychology, school social work, physical and occupational therapy, career technical education, special needs training and speech pathology services. The Lenawee Intermediate School District provides educational services to students from birth through age 26 who have severe handicaps. Students with severe physical, mental, emotional or sensory impairments may receive their educational program at a classroom operated by the LISD. 129 students from ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS attended LISD classroom programs during the 2010-11 school year. The LISD operates the Laura Haviland Program for elementary, middle and high school students with severe emotional and behavioral impairments. 12 students from ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS attended Laura Haviland during the 2010-11 school year. In cooperation with the Lenawee County Probate Court, the LISD operates the juvenile education program housed at the Maurice Spear Campus. LISD operates special education classrooms in local districts including classrooms for students with physical or other health impairments and hearing impairments in Madison; and classrooms
for students with cognitive impairments in Tecumseh and Adrian. 18 students from ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS attended these programs during the 2010-11 school year. The LISD PREP Academy provides educational programs for teen parents from Lenawee County. During the student's instructional program, childcare support is provided. 17 students from ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS attended the LISD PREP Academy during the 2010-11 school year. The LISD TECH Center offers career technical education programs for high school juniors and seniors. 132 students from ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS attended the LISD TECH Center or participated in the co-op/work experience program during 2010-11. This equals 27.8% of the junior and senior population for this school district. The most recent follow-up of LISD TECH Center students (a 2010 study of 2009 graduates) showed 69.1% were continuing their education. Of those continuing their education, 68.5% were continuing in a field related to their LISD TECH Center program. In addition, 74.2% were working (full-time or part-time) with 11 reporting they were seeking employment. Of those working full-time, 58.3% were in a field related to their LISD TECH Center program. Local districts operate special education classrooms open to students from other districts. ADRIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS placed 9 students attend these programs during the 2010-11 school year. CORE CURRICULUM Alexander Elementary teachers follow the curriculum that has been approved by the Adrian Public Schools superintendent and Board of Education. Our core curriculum follows the Michigan Curriculum Framework and is aligned with the Grade Level Content Expectations for the state. This year, our first and second grade teachers will be laying the ground work with the Kent County Curriculum Crafter tool to better manage standards-based instruction that more tightly aligns with the GLCE’s and ultimately, the Common Core standards. STATUS OF THE 3 – 5 YEAR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN Initial work began as part of the school improvement process with teachers serving on content area teams disaggregating assessment data thereby developing content area academic achievement goals. Three times during the school year, staff administers the DRA/QRI to progress monitor student performance in reading. In addition the school staff collect and rate student writing using the Adrian Public Schools Analytical Scoring Rubric. Furthermore, kindergarten staff administers the DIBELS three times yearly to monitor early literacy progress. MEAP data is disaggregated in late February, when data typically becomes available, special care to note trends in sub groups and across content strands. For the 2011-2012 the focus of the school improvement plan falls in three content areas: math, reading, and writing with the bulk of professional development over the course of the last two
years on writing. Reading has focused primarily on developing deeper understandings with math focusing on problem-solving. In addition during the school year, new science materials will be introduced in grades K, third, and fourth with grades 1 and 2 to take on new materials next year. Expanded building-based data will be collected (in addition to MEAP). This includes Dibles in grades K~2 and NWEA in grades 2~4. DATA Third and Fourth Grade students continue to have strong showings on the MEAP test. Test Year

PARENT INVOLVEMENT We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort. Last year, a newly formed Parent Advisory Committee formed and met for the first time. This group holds as its purpose to provide parental feedback and insight into the school day, trends from a parental perspective, as well as input on student achievement. For the 2011-2012 school year, we look to expand the size of this group to provide a more thorough analysis of our school community and its needs. Working together, staff, students, and parents can continue to make Alexander Elementary School a great place to be. CLOSING STATEMENT Alexander students, parents, and staff can be proud of the accomplishments of our students on any given day. From our specialized Kindergarten intervention program, to our 4th grade after school engineering enrichment program, from our positive behavior supports expectations to our after school tutoring, many people realize why Alexander Elementary School is a great place to be. Sincerely,
Mr. Jeff Petterson, Principal Alexander Elementary School
