This annual report may be your first introduction to Angel Flight West–or you may be a member and Command Pilot who flies a hundred missions a year. Regardless, thanks for taking a few minutes to learn more about this unique volunteer pilot organization that gives so much back. Through the generosity of many patrons, volunteers, and especially our volunteer pilots, Angel Flight West was able to arrange 6,318 missions and completed 4,133 in 2009. Some flight cancelations were due to either weather conditions or lack of an available pilot, but most were canceled to accommodate our passengers’ changing schedules. The arranging and flying of these many missions was accomplished in one of the most challenging economic environments in recent history. What follows is Angel Flight West’s annual report for 2009.

All costs are covered by our volunteer pilots or our airline partner, Alaska Airlines. In June 2009, we flew our 40,000th mission. In the following pages you will meet some of the passengers we’ve flown.

For the past 26 years, Angel Flight West has arranged tens of thousands of flights for people in need of transportation to and from non-emergency medical treatment and for other compelling human needs. Every flight is totally free.

As AFW enters its second quarter century, we are positioned to contribute even more to society as a whole and to the communities in which we live. Our next milestone is to fly 5,000 missions annually. To achieve this goal, we will be launching version 2.0 of

There is a lot more to AFW then the ongoing satisfaction of accomplishing our mission. As one of the oldest and largest volunteer pilot organizations in the country, we feel an obligation to support general aviation and public benefit flying. Over the years, we have shared our name, our technology, and our resources with many other volunteer pilot organizations, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). We will continue to support general aviation and public benefit flying around the world.

our Angel Flight Information Data System (AFIDS). We are planning to offer this $100,000 AFIDS upgrade to other volunteer pilot organizations. 2009 also saw the unveiling of AFW’s Culture of Professionalism–Safety Above All Else. AFW is the only volunteer pilot organization that requires each Command Pilot to complete a faceto-face orientation with a Mission Orientation Pilot. Both the NTSB and the FAA have acknowledged our orientation program. Upon completion, the pilot earns credit toward the FAA’s WINGS pilot proficiency program. The AFW Command Pilot Orientation is available to all volunteer pilot organizations on our website. Several years ago, AFW’s Board of Directors took the bold step of establishing the Angel Flight West Foundation, a separate 501(c)(3) organization. The mission of the Foundation is to fund AFW in perpetuity, so that Angel Flight West is self-sustaining and no longer dependent on outside funding, another example of AFW’s long range planning and strategic thinking.

ANGEL FLIGHT WEST ANNUAL REPORT 2009

Whether we are arranging free flights for medical personnel into and out of Haiti, transporting an infant with cancer to treatment, a domestic violence victim to safety, a military veteran, or a young burn survivor to summer camp, the volunteers and staff of Angel Flight West are making a positive difference everyday.

We continue to pursue growth through the Wings representing us in the 13 western states we currently service. In support of this grass roots growth, in 2009 we formally established Community Service Councils as an integral part of each Wing to function in “spreading the word” at the local level.

Thank you to the volunteers who assist in every aspect of coordinating missions, lending a hand in stuffing envelopes and just being available. And, a special thank you goes out to the Command Pilots who flew a mission in 2009.

Regardless of how large Angel Flight West grows, we will always remain a grass roots organization. Our core strength is one pilot flying one mission.

Welcome to our annual report, and thanks to all those who have made our mission possible in 2009. Thank you to all the donors who have made arranging the missions possible.

ANGEL FLIGHT WEST HISTORICAL TIMELINE In the beginning, there wasn’t much; a few pilots, some folding chairs, a hangar at what was then Gunnell Aviation at Santa Monica Municipal Airport in Southern California, and a belief in the hearts of those pilots that they could use their airplanes to help others. The year was 1983. For 26 years, Angel Flight West has provided not just transportation, but care, compassion...and hope. It is a remarkable person-to-person endeavor that has every reason to celebrate its many years of success.

The LA chapter becomes an independent organization and renames itself “Angel Flight West.”

Merger with AirLifeLine and AFW’s relationship with Alaska Airlines begins. Alaska Airlines not only donates 600 tickets annually to help AFW transport passengers throughout the U.S., but also features AFW as one of a few select charitable organizations to receive passenger-donated frequent flyer miles.

Without our volunteer pilots, Angel Flight West would not exist. Our pilots give freely of their time and money, helping healthcare professionals restore health and hope to those whose lives have been disrupted by illness, disaster, or other life-altering events. Their reward is the joy of knowing how much difference they’ve made. Our pilots donate their time, talent, airplane, fuel, and operating expenses, which in 2009 totaled $2,520,950. At the time of their orientation, Angel Flight West pilots must meet requirements that include minimum total flight hours and hours within the last 6 and 12 months. More specific AFW pilot requirements can be found on our web site located at: www. angelflightwest.org. AFW pilots must also hold a current medical certificate, and must supply a copy of a certificate of insurance applicable to the aircraft that will be used for AFW missions. In addition, the pilot must affirm at the orientation that he/she will adhere to all Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR), and that he/she has the certificate rating for the aircraft to be flown when acting as pilot in command on an AFW mission. An AFW pilot renting an airplane must supply proof of a checkout for the aircraft to be used on AFW missions.

On my first Angel Flight West mission, I was sure to tell my passenger that my flying her was far more of a blessing to me then it could ever be to her…to this day, we still argue about who gets more out of the experience. –Todd Underwood, AFW volunteer pilot

It is inspiring to me to be included as a mission assistant flying with AFW, seeing the kindness and generosity given by the pilot, and watching the impact that the pilot, unbeknownst to himself, is having as a great role model. Alice’s grandson RJ’s eyes followed Larry’s every move... play-acting being a pilot all the way home! –Ilene Broder, AFW volunteer mission assistant

You may think you are doing such a small act, simply providing the service of transportation, but you have done so much more. You have given us the life of our daughter. She will grow and see this beautiful world, and she will learn that she is a cancer survivor. – Chuck and Diana, parents of AFW patient Taylor Angel Flight West provides free flights to passengers with a verifiable financial need, or when transportation by private aircraft provides particular medical or logistical advantages. For example, an individual who lives in a rural area without easy access to commercial transportation, or someone who is highly susceptible to infection because of a weakened immune system and cannot be exposed to crowds may qualify for an AFW mission. Passengers must be medically stable and able to walk, to board, and exit the aircraft with little or no assistance. When weather or other conditions keep our pilots on the ground, we do our best to arrange alternate transportation, such as flights donated by Alaska Airlines, or by purchasing tickets through our Passenger Assistance Fund. In addition to medical flights, we arrange transportation for other humanitarian purposes, such as individuals and families escaping domestic violence; injured military personnel taking part in therapeutic programs offered by the Wounded Warrior Project and other veterans’ organizations; and prospective parents hoping to adopt a child. Because not all healing takes place in the hospital, Angel Flight West also serves as the “official airline” for a number of children’s special needs camps attended by youngsters and teens. T

January 16, 2010 Dear Angel Flight West: Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you have done for the “Smith” family! I am a case manager/service coordinator for a state-run early intervention program in Nevada. We serve children up to three years old with disabilities and developmental delays. I heard about you from an AFW pilot, Barb Ausherman. Within a week, the “Smith” family was taking their first flight to Santa Rosa, California, from Reno, Nevada. They wanted to show their gratitude and asked me to type this letter for them. Alondra is two-and-a-half-years-old. She suffers from a birth defect the doctors believe to be anophthalmia: lack of formation of the eyes. For the past 18 months, Alondra has been in treatment with an Ocularist in Oakland, California, about a five hour trip each way. There are no such specialists in Reno or Northern Nevada. At each of her appointments, the Ocularist adjusts Alondra’s “conformers,” which are similar to prosthetic eyes. As she grows, so do the conformers. She will never see, but she will be able to wear prosthetic eyes for the rest of her life and look just as if she was a typical blind child. We live in the mountains and cannot depend on open or safe road conditions to Oakland. As well, the gas is very expensive for the family. Her dad works full time, while her mom stays home with Alondra and their nineyear-old other daughter. The Ocularist needs to see Alondra at least once every couple of months. For the past yearand-a-half, Alondra has been flown by a private pilot through your organization to each and every visit. Come snow, holidays and emergencies, AFW is always there. In addition, your bilingual mission coordinator is a huge help since the “Smiths” speak Spanish. The “Smiths” have nothing but positive and raving comments in regards to your pilots, services and organization. On a personal note, I tell schools and doctors about you. You truly are a godsend! Thank you so much! Your services have kept Alondra on track to leading a more normal and better quality of life. Thanks for all you do for so many other sick children on the West coast. The quick service and turnaround for last-minute requests is an added bonus. I am thankful for that day I met Barb, and even more thankful to the organization of unique and caring pilots you have put together. Thank you again from both the family and myself. Your program is truly amazing!
