Official Launching

On October 24th, 2007, Chad Gaffield, President of SSHRC announced the Age-Friendly Communities, Active Aging Alliance had been awarded the Community-University Research Alliance (CURA) grant. This official launching marked the begining of a five year project focused on supporting age-friendly community development through rigourous research.

Staffing Updates A warm welcome to Louise Hutton, our new Community Liaison, and Dawn Veselyuk the Project Coordinator. Also, welcome to our new trainees; Toni Morris-Oswald, a Postdoctoral Fellow; Becky Raddatz, a Masters of City Planning student; Sheila Novek, a student in Community Health Sciences; and Kaeleigh Schroeder, a Sociology student.

Age-Friendly Summit The Age-Friendly Summit was held in Portage la Prairie on February 11th and 12th with 70 representatives from ten communities. Kerri Irvin-Ross, the Minister responsible for Seniors, gave the opening statement and announced that the participating communities will share $20,000 in provincial funding. The interactive summit included various speakers, a panel discussion and breakout sessions.

Project Updates WISER Study Phase III

Interviews with 1015 individuals living in Winnipeg have been completed. Analysis of the data has begun.

Age-Friendly Communities Survey

A paper survey was sent to 198 communities and responses have started to return in the mail.

PhotoVoice

Photo taking has been completed by two groups in Winnipeg and one group in Dauphin. The cameras are currently being returned. The project is now starting with a group in Carman.

Portage la Prairie Implementation Meetings

An advisory committee has been established. The committee meets monthly and is now preparing a ‘terms of reference document.’ This document outlines background information on the committee, its purpose, and other details.
