Adventures of Sandy Sunday© Message:

Sunday School Program with music teaches about Bible characters and Biblical principles. 18 segments each 25 to 40 minutes Original music order separately http://dramashare.org/item.php?id=44302

Cast:

Two main characters, Sandy Sunday and Mandy Monday, may be male or female (Mandy could be Randy) Actors as required for individual monologs and sketches

Set:

The main part of the set is the B.I.B.L.E. Machine which is equipped with flashing lights, graphics. The machine can be as hi-tech or as ordinary as you see fit, but you should have a keyboard, (which doesn’t need to be hooked up to anything, for effect only). Paint on the following graphics: “The B.I.B.L.E. Machine” ”Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences” ”PLEASE” ”OUTPUT” ”The Amazing Adventures of Sandy Sunday”

Props:

can be as major or minor as resources permit, see individual sketches scarves or costumes should be provided for the children

Costumes:

Segment actors costumes would likely be in traditional Bible dress

Procedure:

The intent is to get the children very involved in the story plots, by miming or speaking some of the action. In individual monologue or drama sketches you will have Sandy touch the actor’s shoulder, which has the effect of freezing actors while the children work through miming the activity of the drama. Individual churches can extend or reduce the length of these segments to fit their individual circumstances. Where possible and appropriate have “Sandy’s Song” sung during the church service, after which the children are dismissed to go to “The Adventures of Sandy Sunday” in their classroom.

Music:

“Sandy’s Song” is used to open each segment, and “The B.I.B.L.E. Machine” is used at the end of each segment. These songs are available on CD from DramaShare, order at: http://dramashare.org/item.php?id=44302 We suggest that a CD of the songs be made up for each child, (or possibly each family), in order that children can take the songs home with them.

This program will be expanded in the future.

Segment 1:

Moses Receiving the Ten Commandments

Sandy and Mandy enter, look around surprised to see anyone Sandy:

Oh hi, didn’t expect to see all you people! Hi! My name is Sandy Sunday, and this is Mandy Monday.

Mandy:

Who are these people anyhow, Sandy?

Sandy:

Well, Mandy, my guess is that this is a Sunday School.

Mandy:

A Sunday School? You mean like a Sunday School on . . Sunday?

Sandy:

Strange, but a lot of Sunday Schools do happen on Sunday, Mandy.

Mandy:

Wow! So what are we gonna do if this room is busy, I mean and we were gonna work on our B.I.B.L.E. Machine and all.

Sandy:

I have an idea! Would you kids like to see how the B.I.B.L.E. Machine works?

allow feedback Mandy:

OK, well we will give the B.I.B.L.E. Machine time to warm up and then we will try it out.

Sandy:

While we are waiting, who can tell me about the Ten Commandments?

Mandy:

I can! I can!

Sandy:

Actually I was asking the children here.

Mandy:

Not fair, how come I never get to answer questions?

Sandy:

Fine then, what is a commandment?

Mandy:

Commandments are like telling someone what they have to do.

Sandy:

Wow, I am impressed, that is very good!

Mandy:

Well, I do know things you know! So, okay now, ask me another question, go ahead.

Sandy:

Well, who did God give the ten commandments to?

Mandy:

My Mom.

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 2

Sandy:

Your Mom? What did your Mom have to do with the Ten Commandments?

Mandy:

My Mom is always telling me what to do.

Sandy:

That is just a silly answer.

Mandy:

Is not.

Sandy:

Is too.

Mandy:

Is not.

Sandy:

Oh fine then, go ahead, tell me, what are the Ten Commandments?

Mandy:

Let’s see, there’s clean up your room, do the dishes, brush your teeth, comb your hair, walk the dog, . . . . don’t tell me, there’s also . .

Sandy:

You have no idea anything about the Ten Commandments do you?

Mandy:

Do so!

Sandy:

Do not!

Mandy:

Do so!

Sandy:

Look, this is just silly. All of the children here want to learn about the Ten Commandments and here you are talking about walking the dog and doing the dishes . . .

Mandy:

Don’t forget the part about cleaning your room, Mom is big on clean rooms.

Sandy:

Well I can tell you for sure that the Ten Commandments have nothing at all to do with your clean room. (thinks, gets an idea) I know! Let’s check out our B.I.B.L.E. system!

Mandy:

The B.I.B.L.E. system? Think that the Ten Commandments are in there?

Sandy:

The B.I.B.L.E. system is our super-efficient hi-tech helper that helps us track down hot news stories from the past and present.

Mandy:

B.I.B.L.E.? What does B.I.B.L.E. mean?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 3

Sandy:

B.I.B.L.E. stands for Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences. So let’s get started!

Mandy:

Wow! Isn’t this exciting? Boys and girls, aren’t you excited?

Sandy:

Well, before we begin on this B.I.B.L.E. adventure, there are a couple of things that us B.I.B.L.E. adventurers always do. First we sing the special song. You will get to know this song really well because we will sing it every time we get together, and also we will be handing out the words and a CD that you can take home with you. For right now, see the words are on the screen here, so let’s sing along, OK?

play CD, leaders lead in singing Sandy’s Song How am I certain And how can I know? I have His promise God loves me so. He is my Father I am His child, His love so amazing So tender and mild. Father in heaven With me below. Love and protect me, Others to show, You love all people, Caring and kind. Lord of creation Be Lord of my mind. As I am growing Show me your will Strengthen and keep me Guide me until Working for others Your work to do Me an example My Saviour, of you. Sandy:

Hey, that was awesome singing!

Mandy:

Sandy! Sandy!

Sandy:

Yes Mandy?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 4

Mandy:

I like that song soooooooooo much, like I would like it if, could we maybe, that is I really think the children might like to sing the B.I.B.L.E. theme song again!

Sandy:

Really? You think the children would want that? Would you children?

repeat Sandy’s Song Mandy:

Wow, that was awesome! I really like, that is, the children really like that song! But you said there were a couple of things we do before we get started. What is the second thing?

Sandy:

Second thing we do is pray. So can everyone stand, bow your head, close your eyes and we will talk to God? Dear heavenly Father we ask that our time together would be a pleasant learning time for each person here. Help each one of us learn more about you and what you want to do in our lives. Father, guide and protect these children and the homes they come from. We pray in your holy name, Amen.

Mandy:

Amen! And now can we get started learning about the Ten Commandments?

Sandy:

We sure can! Now we need all of the boys and girls here to be our B.I.B.L.E. assistants.

Mandy:

Wow! Every one? That is awesome! But . . . can I be an assistant too?

Sandy:

You certainly may, Mandy! First I need one volunteer, who will be our first volunteer?

choose a volunteer, either boy or girl Mandy:

(call child by first name). This looks like a fine volunteer!

Sandy:

Yes, I know that (child’s name) will make a fine volunteer indeed! Now then, (child’s name), would you come up here and be our first assistant? (child comes to front) Now then, (child), would you help us get the B.I.B.L.E., Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences program started? (takes child to the B.I.B.L.E. closet) See that keypad there? Would you punch in the secret code please?

Mandy:

But how would (child) know the secret code?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 5

Sandy, confused: But I just told everyone the secret code. Please. See, it’s painted right here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. P L E A S E. Right there. child pushes the spot marked “PLEASE”, lights flash, noises come from machine Sandy:

There we go! (opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today we are learning about The Ten Commandments, let’s see, here I will type in the code for Ten Commandments. (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Says here, Ten Commandments can be found in the “Exodus” file here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. Let me punch that in . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, here it is, let’s see . .hmmmmm . . . (pause as though reading) Moses . . wilderness . . people . . . Ten Commandments. Yes, yes this will work just about right I think. Now then, (child), we need you to be Moses. Mandy, could you check in the back of the B.I.B.L.E. machine, see if there are any Moses-type things for (child) to wear today?

Mandy brings back costume and/or prop, can be elaborate or simply a scarf for headdress, can even be a item or badge made of paper Sandy:

Oh, thank you Mandy, this will do just fine! Now then all of the rest of the children have very important roles as well, they will be the Jewish people. Now Mandy, we need something for each of the Jewish people to wear as well.

Mandy and assistants will get items for the rest of the children, likely would be less showy that that given to Moses. As these are being handed out, Sandy begins to tell the story, takes pages off B.I.B.L.E. machine Sandy:

Now here is the details about what happened. The Jewish people had been slaves in another country, Egypt, for many years. God knew that being a slave was not a good thing and so God came to one of the Jewish people, Moses, and told Moses that he must lead the people back to their homeland. God wanted the Jewish people to be his people forever, and God wanted them to do what was right. So God said to Moses, “I want you to come up on top of this mountain, and I will give you some rules so my people will know what is right and what is wrong.” So Moses went up the mountain.

Mandy or other assistant guides “Moses” to a separate area. If possible this area would be raised, as in on a sturdy box, a walkway or other appropriate item

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 6

Sandy:

The people waited and waited at the foot of the mountain, waiting while Moses went up the mountain to talk to God. And God gave Moses two pieces of flat stone, (give Moses two large tablets made from Styrofoam), on which was written God’s list of rules, which he called The Ten Commandments. These rules told the people what they must and must not do. Moses carried the commandments down the mountain so the people the people would know what was right and what was wrong.

Mandy:

OK, but just what were these Ten Commandments all about, what did it say on the stone?

Sandy:

The Ten Commandments were: You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them. You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 7

Mandy:

Wow, that was a lot of rules, and really hard to understand! Glad we don’t have those kind of rules today!

Sandy:

Well actually the very same rules, those same Ten Commandments are in effect today.

Mandy:

They are? So we still have to be careful of wanting someone’s ox or donkey?

Sandy:

Very funny, Mandy! But yes, God still wants us to be His people and He still expects us to obey the same rules.

Mandy:

OK but like I say, sometimes I have trouble with reading the Bible ‘cause the language they used is kinda hard to understand.

Sandy:

Well, yes, sometimes it is, and that’s why we have B.I.B.L.E. Machine, Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences. I can just type in a question into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, or ask for a more clear explanation and the details will come right back to me.

Mandy:

Wow, that’s great! So we can get answers from the B.I.B.L.E. Machine. But, know what, I was wondering if these children might know what some of these Ten Commandments mean. Why don’t we ask them first, then ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine?

Sandy:

Mandy, I think that is an awesome idea! OK, your read the first commandment Mandy.

Mandy:

First Commandment is: You shall have no other gods before me.

Sandy:

“No other gods before me”? Any of you have any idea what that means?

allow time for input, treat every answer in a very positive manner, rephrase where necessary to make the child feel good about the experience Mandy:

Hey, this is the part I want to see . .. what does the B.I.B.L.E. Machine have to say?

Sandy pounds away at keyboard, there is a whirring sound and a sheet of paper comes out a slot on the machine Sandy:

Let’s see, says here: Love God only and don’t worship other gods.

Mandy:

I am confused, I mean I can see the part about loving God, that just makes sense. But that part about worshipping other gods .. . I don’t even know other gods, let alone worship them!

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 8

Sandy:

That’s a very good comment Mandy. Can any of you boys and girls think of other gods we might be tempted to worship?

in a positive manner encourage input Sandy:

Well those are some good answers. I see on this page that the B.I.B.L.E. Machine also made a comment. It said, “Sometimes we can allow good things like money, or popularity or success or sports or even school to be a god. God wants that nothing at all in our life other than Him will be worshipped or treated more special than God.” Hmmmm, now that is interesting! Can you think of times when things in your life could become gods?

encourage input Mandy:

That is interesting! OK, the second commandment is: You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.

again encourage input from children Sandy:

I am excited to see what the B.I.B.L.E. Machine has to say about that one! (types on keyboard, sheet of paper comes out) OK, it says here, “Do not build any statues of any gods or worship them.” Any ideas on that one children?

encourage input Sandy:

Excellent answers again. I see the B.I.B.L.E. Machine has more comments. Says here, “See my comments for Commandment #1. As well, do not even make statues of God Himself, for it is the person of God and not something made by human hands that is to be worshipped.”

Mandy:

The third commandment is: You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

invite children’s input Sandy:

Let’s check the B.I.B.L.E. Machine. (types on keyboard, sheet of paper comes out) OK, it says here, “Do not swear or use God’s name foolishly.”

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 9

encourage input Sandy:

Let’s have a look at the Fourth Commandment: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Mandy:

That was kinda long and complicated. Any ideas of how to put it in simple language?

encourage input Sandy:

Let’s check the B.I.B.L.E. Machine again. (types on keyboard, sheet of paper comes out) OK, it says here, “Remember the Lord’s Day, Sunday. Make it holy because it belongs to God.”

encourage input. Increasingly encourage children’s greater involvement. Mandy:

Fifth commandment says: Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

encourage input Sandy:

You guys are getting very good! Let’s check the B.I.B.L.E. Machine. (types on keyboard, sheet of paper comes out) OK, it says here, “Respect your mother and father.”

encourage input Mandy:

Sixth, seventh and eighth commandments say: You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal.

encourage input Sandy:

OK, B.I.B.L.E. Machine, what do you have to say? (types on keyboard, sheet of paper comes out) OK, it says here, “The B.I.B.L.E. Machine sees that these are short and crystal-clear commandments. Do not murder. Do not take someone’s husband or wife. Do not steal. All humans need to remember is, ‘You shall not’ and they will be OK. Enough said!”

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 10

Mandy:

Guess that was plain and clear! Ninth commandment says: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

invite comments Sandy:

OK, B.I.B.L.E. Machine, your turn. (types on keyboard, sheet of paper comes out) OK, it says here, “Do not lie about other people. Never. Not now, not ever!”

Mandy:

And the last commandment is: You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

invite comments Sandy:

OK, B.I.B.L.E. Machine, your turn. (types on keyboard, sheet of paper comes out) Oh I see that the B.I.B.L.E. Machine has quite interesting things to say about this one! It says here, “This is the toughest commandment of all, even for a wonderful machine like me! The commandment means, “Do not want what belongs to others. But sometimes that is very hard!”

Mandy:

You know, the B.I.B.L.E. Machine is right. I mean, when my friend gets a new baseball glove, or new clothing, or gets better grades than I do . . . . well, it’s just hard is all!

Sandy:

What kind of things that belong to others do you sometimes wish were yours?

invite input the B.I.B.L.E. Machine begins to make strange noises and a sheet of paper comes out Sandy:

Wonder what’s happening with the B.I.B.L.E. Machine? Oh, here, let’s see it says, “I try really, really hard but there is a computer back in the store came in, had a really sweet case, flashing lights of all colors, voice activated, ohhhhh man! I want soooooo bad to have all the things! I mean I know it’s wrong but . . . . . . .”

loud screams and screeching from the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, lights flashing frantically Mandy:

I can see that we have some fixing up to do on the B.I.B.L.E. Machine!

Sandy:

Yes, yes we do, but I promise, we will have it fixed and back here for the next edition of “The Amazing Adventures of Sandy Sunday”

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 11

Mandy:

I was wondering, before we leave, if we could sing a song about Moses and the Ten Commandments?

Sandy:

I would like that too, the words are right up here.

Where do we find it Advice we need to see? I know the answer, It’s the B.I.B.L.E. The B.I.B.L.E. Has answers just for me I will never be alone It’s in my heart you see. The B.I.B.L.E. The truth that’s right for me I’m safe and strong Because I have the B.I.B.L.E. Now Moses led the people For a weekend desert stroll But after 40 long, long years It began to take a toll. Moses saw the sinning God, “What am I to do?” God said, “Come up the mountain I have got some rules for you.” Now many years have gone by Since Moses was on hand But still it seems God’s people Have forgotten God’s commands. Still the B.I.B.L.E. Has answers just for me I will never be alone It’s in my heart you see. The B.I.B.L.E. The truth that’s right for me I’m safe and strong Because I have the B.I.B.L.E. Sandy & Mandy:

Bye boys and girls, see you next time!

Segment 2:

Moses’ Journey to Mt Sinai

Sandy and Mandy enter Sandy:

Hi guys, remember me? I am Sandy Sunday, and would like to tell you another Amazing Adventure of Sandy Sunday. I have brought along the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and Mandy Monday is here too! It is so good to see you again. But before we get started, we need to open in prayer, so I would like everyone to bow their head and close their eyes while (one of the leaders) leads us in prayer.

The theme of the session is patience and understanding who we can trust when we are alone, therefore the opening prayer should use this basis. Sandy:

That was very nice, thank you.

Mandy:

Excuse me, excuse me!

Sandy:

Yes Mandy, what is it?

Mandy:

Well, I would really like to sing our special song, OK? . . . Wait, we don’t have anyone to play the piano or anything.

Sandy:

You know, I think that it would be great to sing. And the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can play awesome background music! I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

play CD, leaders lead in singing How am I certain And how can I know? I have His promise God loves me so. He is my Father I am His child, His love so amazing So tender and mild. Father in heaven With me below. Love and protect me, Others to show, You love all people, Caring and kind. Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Lord of creation Be Lord of my mind. As I am growing Show me your will Strengthen and keep me Guide me until Working for others Your work to do Me an example My Saviour, of you. Sandy:

That was very good singing!

Mandy:

Yes it was. You know I had a lot of fun last time when we got together for the Amazing Adventures of Sandy Sunday. What are we going to talk about today?

Sandy:

Well, tell you what, why don’t I just press the “question mark” key on the B.I.B.L.E. Machine and find out?

Sandy presses the key and noises and lights start coming from the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, a sheet of paper comes out the slot Sandy:

Here we are, what does it say? The B.I.B.L.E. Machine says, “Today we will learn about patience, and who we can trust when we are alone. We are going to talk about Moses, and how he went up the mountain to talk with God.

Mandy:

That sounds exciting! Do you think we could have the children act out the story just like last time?

Sandy:

I think that is an excellent idea! All of the boys and girls here can be our B.I.B.L.E. assistants. First I need one volunteer, who will be our first volunteer?

try to choose a boy although it can be either boy or girl Mandy:

(call child #1 by first name). This looks like a great volunteer!

Sandy:

Yes, I know that (child #1) will make a fine volunteer indeed! Now then, (child #1), would you come up here and be our first assistant? (child #1 comes to front) Now then, (child #1), would you help us get the B.I.B.L.E., Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences program started? (takes child #1 to the B.I.B.L.E. machine) See that keypad there? Would you punch in the secret code please?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 14

Mandy:

Do you children know the secret code?

encourage feedback Sandy:

Yes, the secret code is “Please”. See, it’s painted right here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. P L E A S E. Right there. Please is the secret code.

child #1 pushes the spot marked “PLEASE”, lights flash, brief clip of B.I.B.L.E. theme song music begins Sandy:

There we go! (opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today we are learning about Moses going up the mountain called Mount Sinai to talk with God, let’s see, here I will type in the code. (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Says here, can be found in the “Exodus” file here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. Let me punch that in . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, here it is, let’s see . .hmmmmm . . . (pause as though reading) Moses . . mountain . . Mt Sinai. Yes, yes this will work just about right I think. Now then, (child #1), we need you to be Moses. Mandy, could you check in the back of the B.I.B.L.E. machine, see if there are any things back there that Moses might wear for (child #1), that is for Moses, to wear today?

The Jewish people had been wandering in the desert for many years, God had chosen Moses to be their leader. But sometimes the people became very unhappy and started grumbling. So God said to Moses, “I want you to come up on top of this mountain, Mt Sinai, and we will discuss what must happen, so that my people will be happy and content.” So Moses went up the mountain.

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 15

Mandy or other assistant guides “Moses” to a separate area. If possible this area would be raised, as in on a sturdy box, a walkway or other safe, appropriate item Sandy:

The people waited and waited at the foot of the mountain, waiting while Moses went up the mountain to talk to God. They waited and waited and waited.

Mandy:

What a bummer! I hate waiting!

Sandy:

The Israelites hated it too. The people started to grumble . . . I said the people started to grumble . . . (pointing at the children) Hey guys, you are the people, right? . . . Well then . . grumble.

Mandy:

I know how we could do that, just say, “mumble, mumble, mumble”, over and over again. Let’s try it kids . . . “mumble, mumble, mumble”!

children all mumble, mumble, mumble Sandy:

But wait, Mandy, there is something wrong here!

Mandy:

What’s wrong Mandy?

Sandy:

Well, if the people were grumbling, that means they would be sad, kinda angry and mad, right?

Mandy:

Yeh, I guess so Sandy, but why is that important?

Sandy:

Well, see, the children here are playing the part of the people, and they were mumble, mumbling really good . . . but . . . I saw big smiles on their faces. So they didn’t look like they were sad or angry or mad at all!

Mandy:

I never thought about that Sandy! But you kids do want to do this really good don’t you, so if we are going to be convincing we need our faces to act sad and angry and mad, right? OK, let’s try it this way. What is the opposite of sad?

encourage the response, “happy” Mandy:

Exactly! Now, can anyone show me the kind of face you have when you are happy? Now I don’t want to hear a sound, I just want you to show me with your face that you are happy

encourage kids to mime happiness Mandy:

Very good indeed! Now then, can you show me the kind of face you have had at times when you have been sad or angry or mad?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 16

encourage kids to show sadness, anger Mandy:

Excellent! Now as we keep those sad, angry, mad faces, let’s go “mumble, mumble”!

leaders encourage the children by directing them Mandy:

Now that’s much better!

Sandy:

I can see where these people are very sad and mad and angry because Moses has been away so long!

Mandy:

Yes, they were, and one of the people, (takes child #2 from the group and leads to the front), said, “I don’t think Moses is ever coming back, we need a leader, someone to worship!” (to child #2) Can you say that line: “I don’t think Moses is ever coming back, we need a leader, someone to worship!” (child #2 repeats the line)

Sandy, selects another child, #3, and leads to the front: But someone else in the crowd says, “Moses told us to wait right here, Moses will be back!” (to child #3) Can you say that line: “Moses told us to wait right here, Moses will be back!” (child #3 repeats the line) Mandy:

But the first person says, “We have waited too long already, I am going to build a calf for us to worship!” (child #2 repeats this line)

Those are some excellent answers.

Mandy:

I know what we should do! Let’s ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine for its answers.

Sandy:

That’s a great idea, Mandy. (Sandy types on keyboard, noises and lights flashing, paper come out slot) OK, here’s what the B.I.B.L.E. Machine has to say. “The Israelite people did what most of us do when we are alone. They became afraid. Although they had been told that God would protect them, they needed Moses to be right there with them at all times, and they wanted a God they could see. They forgot that although our physical eyes can not see God, God is always with us, no matter where we are, or how bad the situation is”.

Mandy:

Wow, B.I.B.L.E. Machine, that was an awesome answer!

there are a few noises and flashing lights Sandy:

The B.I.B.L.E. Machine says thank you. What I like about this story of Moses is that it not only made sense back in Bible times, it tells a very important lesson to us today. We need to remember that even though we can’t see God, He is with us every minute of our day, no matter where we are.

Mandy:

Do you suppose the B.I.B.L.E. Machine could lead us in another song?

The Adventures of Moses and Aaron

Sandy:

Hi guys, good to see you again. Remember me? I am Sandy Sunday, and I have another Amazing Adventure of Sandy Sunday for you. As always I have the B.I.B.L.E. Machine here, and Mandy Monday is here too! It’s great to be here, let’s open in prayer, so I would like everyone to bow their head and close their eyes while (one of the leaders) leads us in prayer.

The theme of the session is people supporting people in God’s plan, therefore the opening prayer should use this basis. Sandy:

That was very nice, thank you.

Mandy:

Now can we sing our special song?

Sandy:

I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine for some good music! I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

You guys are very good singers!

Mandy:

Yes they are, and I like what the song says too. But tell me Sandy, what is the B.I.B.L.E., Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences story about today?

Sandy:

Well, we have a really wonderful story about two brothers from the Bible.

Mandy:

Brothers huh? I have a little brother.

Sandy:

I am sure you love your little brother, right?

Mandy:

Mostly, yes.

Sandy:

Mostly? You don’t love him all the time?

Mandy:

Try loving the little squirt when he is putting frogs in your bed . . . or tying your scarves in knots! Then tell me how much you love a little brother!

Sandy:

Guess that would make it tough at times huh? Do you children have little brothers? . . . Big brothers? . . . Little sisters? . . . . Big sisters?

allow children time to participate Mandy:

Sandy, did the brothers in today’s Bible story ever put frogs in each other’s beds?

Sandy:

Far as I can tell they never did.

Mandy:

What were the brother’s names?

Sandy:

Moses and Aaron.

Mandy:

Moses, let’s see now, what can you children tell me about Moses?

You guys sure know a lot about Moses. Now can anyone tell me about his brother Aaron?

Mandy:

Isn’t that strange. We know so much about Moses and so little about his brother. I wish we could learn more, don’t you children? (pause) Hey, wait a minute, I have an idea!

Sandy:

Mandy, are you thinking what I am thinking?

Mandy:

I do think so! Quick, let’s put some keywords into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine.

Sandy, typing:

Let’s see, “Aaron” and “Moses”, lets try “brothers” as well. OK! Let’s see what happens!

lights flash, sounds are heard. Actor Aaron comes out from behind machine Aaron:

What a lovely place! I just met some people, we had a great chat! They wanted to know all about my brother . . I was proud to tell them about my little brother. (pause, confused look) My brother. . . . Moses. Yes, I can see you know all about him as well. People I met just a bit ago, they asked who I am. I told them . . . I am Moses’ older brother. (pause, confused look) You mean you don’t know me either? Aaron. My name is Aaron. (pause, confused look) I don’t believe this! I mean, I know Moses was mentioned more than twice as much as I in the Bible, but wouldn’t you think with my name being recorded more than three hundred times in the Bible, that I should be recognized? Oh well, such is the way it is, it seems. Moses was my little brother. Have you heard of the circumstances of my brother’s birth? I was young at the time, only three years old. But I remember as though it was yesterday how frightened my parents were when Moses was born. See our people were slaves in Egypt at the time, and Pharaoh, the leader of all Egypt, he decreed that all male babies were to be drowned in the Nile River.

Sandy, touches Aaron’s shoulder and he freezes: We will just pause Aaron for a minute. What do you think it would be like to have to hide a baby and keep him from crying? encourage feedback Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Mandy:

Why don’t we have some children be Moses’ family and show us how they would look after little baby Moses.

select children, lead them in actions Sandy:

That was very good! Now then, let’s get back to Aaron and his story.

Sandy touches Aaron’s shoulder again and he comes back to life Aaron:

When Moses was born my parents hid him from sight, didn’t tell anyone about the baby child in our house. But as he grew and became louder it was obvious that it wasn’t safe to keep him in our home. My mother devised an excellent plan; she would put the little baby in a basket made of papyrus and allow him to float to a spot on the Nile River where Pharaoh’s daughters bathed.

Sandy, touches Aaron’s shoulder: Let’s pause again and show what it would be like if we were there at the edge of the river. Children are guided to act out the drama, take papyrus basket and set it on a table where it can be seen, have some of the children play the parts of daughters and mother. Sandy touches Aaron’s shoulder an he comes back to life Aaron:

Everything went exactly as planned, Pharaoh’s daughter found little Moses, took him home to her castle, and even adopted him. Want to know something even more amazing? Pharaoh’s daughter hired my mother to care for little Moses! Only God could have arranged such a thing as that; it was obvious God was already working in Moses’ life! Many years later, after Moses was grown into a man, God spoke to Moses, told Moses that God wanted him to lead the Israelite people out of Egypt.

child plays the part of Moses, reacts God said that he would provide a country, a home, a promised land where Israelite people could once again be free. Ever notice what is a natural reaction when God asks people to do something? Moses, he hemmed and hawed, this excuse and that, how he didn’t think he was capable, said he couldn’t even talk very good. That didn’t faze God one little bit, God says to Moses, “No problem, have your older brother Aaron do the talking for you.” Moses tried all other kinds of excuses, all had the same results. Gotta tell you, when God gets an idea in his head, might as well just say “OK, your will be done!” Anyhow, that’s how it was I got back to living and working with my little Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

brother. (pause as though someone in audience is asking a question) What was my role in the great scheme of things? Guess you could boil it all down to a single word: Support. I was there to support Moses. In subtle ways .. . and in more obvious ways. three children are guided to mime the actions of Moses, Aaron & Hur Like when we were at war with Amalek, our soldiers were successful only when Moses held the staff of God high above his head. When the staff was lowered our soldiers would start to be pushed back. So I and Hur, a friend, supported Moses’ arms all day long so that our army were successful. (pause as though someone in audience is asking a question) You ask if I always did the right thing? I am human, I have frailties. Regardless of the important position which God placed me in, still I am a sinner. Still God forgave and God used me. Used me in ways I could never have imagined! What an awesome thing it is to do the will of God! I had to remember that some are called to be the well known leaders, to do the noteworthy things. . . like my little brother Moses. But for some of us our role will be more in the background, less in the spotlight, supporting those who will be better known. Regardless, God works through us as we support others, and God, in turn, provides all the support that we will ever need. Or even desire. Truly I would rather be lowly servant in the house of the Lord, than a king in the palace of man. Aaron goes back behind machine Mandy:

Wow! Talk about a B.I.B.L.E. story, truly Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences!

Sandy:

Sure was Mandy, did you notice how God used Aaron, same as he used Moses?

Mandy:

Machine says, “Today we will learn about faith and righteousness. Says here the Bible story is about an innkeeper called Rahab.

Mandy:

Rahab, who was she, and how did God use her?

Sandy:

Well see God’s people had been wandering through the desert, and Joshua became their leader after Moses died. When they got to the Jordan River the leaders decided they needed to find out more about the armies of Jericho, to be sure they could be defeated. So Joshua sent two spies to Jericho to check things out.

Mandy:

Spies? Wow, I love spy stories. Did they call for Bond . . . James Bond?

Sandy, annoyed:

No!

Mandy:

Then what were the spy’s names? Lester Private Eye? Cloak and Dagger?

Sandy:

Not likely. Fact is the Bible doesn’t tell us their names.

Mandy:

I really wish we could find out more about Rahab. I am sure she would have a story to tell! If only she could come and talk to us.

Sandy:

Well, I’m not sure if it would work, but what harm would there be in trying? Let’s see, if I type in some keywords on the B.I.B.L.E. Machine .. . Let’s see, how about just “Rahab”? Wonder what will happen?

Theme:

Rahab, remembered as the prostitute in Jericho, who hid the spies sent by Joshua, tells her story. This script is designed for younger audiences. Rahab shows the importance of being used by God. Through her faith and righteousness she is not only used but is one of only four women mentioned by Matthew in the genealogy of Jesus. This script could be used for younger audiences. (See also “Charred Vessel” for a comparable script for older audiences”).

Script: Did you see that? That woman saw me coming, looked away, crossed the street. And that woman over there . . . with the two children . . see how she scurries the children away, as if by seeing me the children would somehow be left scarred! It’s this way all the time. I am treated like dirt under the feet of those people. I am the lady no one loves. Little did they know what God was planning to do in my life. Yes, and how God was about to use me in His Master Plan. See, I was an innkeeper in a city called Jericho. (pause) An innkeeper. I had a place where people stayed for the night. Kind of like a hotel. (pause, smile) No, I was not rich, mine wasn’t a big fancy hotel, not like the ones downtown, in the rich part of town. In fact my inn was right against the outside wall of the city, just beside the gates. I even had a window that was on the city wall, so, perhaps . . if one were to climb out that window, and down a rope, why that person would be able to conveniently, and quickly, leave the city, without being noticed. And there were many times when the guests in my inn desired to leave unnoticed . . . and quickly. My guests sometimes were not . . well, they were not from the better families, or, in other cases, they did not want others to know who they were, or what business they were about.

have children mime out these activities as Rahab answers the door, talks to spies. Rahab will be sizing up these men without being noticed So it was one late afternoon when two men knocked on my door, seeking accommodation. They told me they were from the hill country nearby, I tried hard not to laugh, these were very obviously foreigners, but whatever, few of my clients used their given names and even fewer their true addresses. But these men were different, even for my usual clientele. By dress and accent, obvious foreigners, Israelites was my best guess. By their actions.. spies. There was little doubt these were the people of whom we had heard, those who had escaped from Egyptian bondage. Everyone in Jericho had heard rumours of how their mighty God had given them this land, how He had brought about awesome miracles, drying up the water in the mighty Red Sea that these people might pass through, destroying the armies and the wills of the Amorite kings in the land east of the Jordan, leading them for many years through the inhospitable desert. It was obvious that these things did not happen through human might or will, but through the power of the almighty Yahweh God. I am not an educated woman, but I am no fool. Obviously since these Israelites were sending advance spies they intended to take and destroy this city. And, given the obstacles and armies that they had already overcome, intuitively I knew it would be impossible, hopeless, that mere mortals of Jericho could stand against this mighty and mysterious God. So it was for my own protection that I felt compelled to do all in my power to protect these men. mime out these activities Immediately I took them up on my roof, covered them over with stalks of flax, and when the authorities came by looking for these two, I reported that the two had left out of the gates. Later, when the searchers had gone I lowered the spies to the ground outside the city walls, warning them to go to the hills for safety. In return for the assistance I provided the spies, I was given assurance from the spies that I and my family would be given safety by the Israelite armies when they besieged and destroyed the city. And the Israelites were true to their word. So it was that when the attack took place I, as had been agreed in advance, tied a red ribbon in my window and the attacking army saw to my safety. This was the end of my old life, and the beginning of the new. I met and married a good man, Salmon, and gave him a son, Boaz. The rest, as they say, is history. The writer of Hebrews refers to me as one who was faithful. James spoke of my righteousness. Matthew recorded my place in the ancestry of Jesus. And the books of the Old Testament dwelled on my improbable past. What a strange progression; how my life evolved from one shunned by society because of questionable status to one who was seen as being of faith and righteousness, one who miraculously was used by God in the human lineage of God’s own son. How fortunate that God can use all people, regardless of background, race, age or gender, when He chooses them to have a part in His Master Plan! I am proof of that, for after my encounter with God, I am no longer the woman no one loves! Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

That was interesting. God used Rahab, even though she wasn’t at all perfect, even though she wasn’t in what we would call a Godly country.

Mandy:

That’s right, you would think God could have chosen someone better than Rahab, someone who knew God well. That makes me wonder, what about you guys? Do you sometimes think God can only use adults? Or people that know lots more about the Bible and stuff?

Beautiful child. . but then don’t all moms think they have the most beautiful child in the world? But you know, incredible as my children were, I think maybe grandchildren are even more special to a woman. Like my grandson Jesse! Jesse he is a fine, successful man now, has children of his own. I know a great-grandmother is supposed to treat all her little ones equally, and I do love them all .. . but one of my grandsons, young David, now truly there is something special about little David! I visited his family just last week. David he was out in the pasture, looking after those precious sheep of his! David’s father, Jesse, he says David was born to be a shepherd, why David even sings to those sheep! And, far as I am concerned, if David becomes a shepherd, nothing wrong with that! Being a shepherd, owning a flock of prime stock, a fine occupation, providing a good living. But, I don’t know why I feel this, but something tells me David will be more than a shepherd boy. A born leader if you ask me! Oh there I go again, boasting about my kids! I better watch out, soon will sound just like my dear mother-in-law! I do want to tell you, never did see a woman brag about her kids the way Rahab did! (pause, as though listening to someone in the audience) Yes, I did say Rahab. Rahab was my mother-in-law, and my dear, dear friend! I would strongly suggest that you wipe that smirk off your face! (pause) Yes, of course I am aware of who Rahab was. But I am even more aware of who she became! Rahab was the one who hid the spies on her roof when the authorities were looking for them. And so it was that Rahab played a huge role in facilitating God providing this land to the Israelites. God made a major change in Mother Rahab, and she became a great teacher to her children, and to her grandchildren. (pause as though listening to someone in the audience) Where did Rahab acquire her knowledge, you ask? She memorized scripture. Yes, yes, that’s right! An uneducated, foreignborn lady, she memorized scripture. When I arrived in this country, after travelling back from Moab with my first mother-in-law, Naomi, I encountered my husband to be, Boaz, working in his fields. Oh, so handsome, so manly! I took to him instantly! But when I met his mother, Rahab, it was then I knew that I must be part of this family! After we married, Rahab, who was by this time a widow, lived with us. Had I been given the power and resources to choose the best teacher in all of Israel I could not have found a teacher of the quality of Rahab. teacher for my children, and for myself as well. Hour after hour as we tended to our household chores and worked in the fields, Rahab would teach me scripture. And she had the most uncanny knack of explaining the meaning of even the most difficult parts of scripture, and of making it come alive. And so it was that Rahab, a foreign born lady, exposed myself, Ruth, another foreign born lady, to the life-changing glories of scripture. I can just hear Rahab saying to me, “My darling daughter, meditate upon the scriptures, hide them in your heart, and teach them to my beloved little ones, your children and theirs, as long as you draw breath! For the truth in the scriptures is the very Word from the mouth of Yahweh God, and it will bring changes in your life and the lives of untold generations, changes the like of which you can not even fathom!” (pause, look into audience) And what of you? That Bible in your hand. Is it merely a badge of belonging, or a fashion statement, or is it the document by which your life will be renewed, changed,. .yes, changed! Rahab, that incredible lady, she was right you know! For those who will continuously expose themselves to the scriptures there is education, knowledge, understanding . . . and change. The power is not there in holding the book in your hand . . it is in locking the contents of that book in your heart! actress goes behind machine Mandy, looking at the Bible in her hand: changing changes!

Wow! The power of this book to make life-

Sandy, to children: Why do you think Rahab treasured the words in the Bible so much? encourage children to talk about the Bible can change lives Mandy:

Those are very good comments! And why was Rahab so important in Ruth’s life?

encourage children to see Rahab as a teacher to Ruth Sandy:

I like that. But Rahab didn’t just teach Ruth, who else did she teach?

encourage children to think of the children, grandchildren who were taught by Rahab Mandy:

Why is it so important that children be taught scripture?

encourage children to see that unless we know the Bible content we will not be positioned to stand against problem which confront us in life. Also it is only through children that Biblical understanding can be perpetuated into the future Mandy:

Wow, so kids really are important to God, aren’t they? Sandy, I wonder if the B.I.B.L.E. Machine would have a song about how the Bible can change lives?

Sandy types in information, lights flash, sounds are heard, and the music begins, words are projected on the wall Where do we find it Advice we need to see? I know the answer, It’s the B.I.B.L.E. The B.I.B.L.E. Has answers just for me I will never be alone It’s in my heart you see. The B.I.B.L.E. The truth that’s right for me I’m safe and strong Because I have the B.I.B.L.E. Do you know God’s provided A book through which you will grow? The book is called the Bible and It will change your life you know. The Bible it will help you To know what’s right and what’s wrong It keeps you strong and helps you grow And that’s why I sing this song. When I am scared and lonely When troubles are all around I just take out my dear Bible And I use the strength I’ve found! See the B.I.B.L.E. Sandy:

Yes, it was. It is so awesome to know that our lives can be changed by reading the Bible. Time for us to go now Mandy, we will be back next time boys and girls. Why not bring a friend next time? We would love to get to know your friends too!

Mandy:

Wouldn’t that be great? Then you can show your friends how the Bible can change their lives too! Bye kids!

Segment 7:

God Speaks To Us So We Can Understand

Sandy:

Guess who is here again? It’s me, Sandy Sunday, along with my friend, Mandy Monday.

Mandy:

I could hardly wait to get back again with you guys! Anything exciting happen with you guys this week?

encourage feedback Sandy:

Sounds like you guys were busy too! Guess what, we have another Amazing Adventure of Sandy Sunday for you. And of course we have the B.I.B.L.E. Machine here, so we can continue on with our “Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences!” Before we start let’s open in prayer, so I would like everyone to bow their head and close their eyes while (one of the leaders) leads us in prayer.

The theme of the session is about how God speaks to us in ways we can understand therefore the opening prayer should use this basis. Sandy:

Thank you so much, (name of leader who lead in prayer), praying is so important!

Mandy:

It sure is, Sandy, praying is how we can talk to God.

Sandy:

Very good, Mandy. Just the same way that I can talk to you, and to these children, we can talk to God.

Mandy:

Now can we sing our special song?

Sandy:

I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine for some good music! I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

Wow, was that some kind of awesome singing or what!

Mandy, kind of preoccupied: Uh, pardon . . . oh, yes, yes, great singing. Sandy, looks at Mandy, confused: You seem like you are away out there in outer space somewhere. I know you Mandy! There’s something on your mind. Tell! What are you thinking about? Mandy:

Sorry Sandy. I was just thinking about what you were saying, how we talk to God, just like we can talk to each other.

Sandy:

Yes we can, but why would that make you sad?

Mandy:

Sorry, I’m not sad, just wondering is all. I mean, like, God knows everything, and well, how can He talk to us and teach us things when even the smartest people can’t be anywhere close to as smart as Him?

There is a loud sneeze from VOB (Voice of B.I.B.L.E. Machine) offstage or from behind the B.I.B.L. E Machine Mandy:

What was that? (looks out among children) Was that you? Does someone here have a bad cold?

Several loud sneezes from VOB

Sandy:

That wasn’t the children Mandy. I think the sneezing is coming from the . . ..

Several more loud sneezes from VOB Mandy:

. . . from the B.I.B.L.E. Machine!

Sandy:

I think you are right, Mandy! B.I.B.L.E. Machine, are you not well?

Several more loud sneezes from VOB, VOB talks as though all stuffed up VOB:

Sorry, please excuse me, but I feel just . . parable!

Mandy:

Parable? The B.I.B.L.E. Machine feels . . . parable?

VOB:

I do so! I have this stuffed up nose, and this . . . Several more loud sneezes from VOB .. . this very bad cold, and I can hardly talk so that anyone can understand me! Several more loud sneezes from VOB Like I said, I feel . . . parable!

Sandy:

Oh I get it, B.I.B.L.E. Machine, you were trying to say that you feel . . terrible.

VOB, sneezes loudly: That’s what I said! I feel . . parable. Mandy:

I thought you meant like, . . . parable, like how Jesus kinda spoke to the people in like stories so that they could understand.

Sandy:

Guess you just got your own answer there, didn’t you Mandy?

Mandy:

Answer? What answer are you talking about Sandy?

Sandy:

Well, you were wondering how God can talk to even the littlest child in a way we can understand, and then you said . . .

Mandy:

. . . . that God uses parables. Right on! Excellent! Hey, listen! I’ve got an idea! Why don’t we talk to the children here about some of the parable stories Jesus used. (speaks to B.I.B.L.E. Machine) B.I.B.L.E. Machine, can you tell us about some of the parables?

VOB, sneezes: Oh excuse me! OK, let’s see first there was the Parable of the Snower. Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 41

Sandy, confused: The Snower? I can’t remember any parable about a snower. Mandy:

Me either. What is a snower anyhow?

VOB, sneezes: Oh, my nose! But you know, the parable where the farmer went out and snowed his sneeds in the ground. Sandy, laughing: ”Snowed his sneeds?” . . . . Oh, I get it, you mean sowed his seeds. VOB:

That’s what I said, “snowed his sneeds.”

Sandy:

Gotcha, the Parable of the Sower, in the Bible, in Luke.

Mandy:

I can’t remember hearing about the Parable of the Sower.

Sandy:

Well my guess is you will want to get to hear that right away! Boys and girls, would you help me show Mandy all about the Parable of the Sower?

Sandy:

This should be lots of fun, and at the same time we will learn lots about how Jesus used picture-stories.

Mandy:

“Picture-stories”?

Sandy:

Yes, picture-stories, parables. You know when someone is trying to tell you something, but you can’t quite understand, then they show you a picture?

Mandy:

Moose.

Sandy, confused: Moose? Mandy:

Yep. I remember when my mom was trying to explain to me about a moose, I could not figure out what it might possibly look like, then mom showed me a picture. You know, a moose sure does look different, my guess is that when God was creating all the creatures He made the moose out of spare parts He had left over.

Sandy, looks at Mandy, unbelieving: Anyhow . . . . God used parable, picture-stories, so people would understand what He was trying to say.

arrange for a pre-selected child or leader to be the main actor (farmer/God), all others will simply be improv, with leaders helping to create the right movements/effects A leader will be the narrator Mandy:

(name of narrator leader), would you please read the parable and the rest of us will paint the picture. Ready guys? We will tell you, and show you, what to do to make this picture-story come to life.

Narrator:

It was springtime . . .

Sandy:

Springtime. Boys and girls, how would we show a spring day?

Mandy:

I know, I know! We could look up, and cover our eyes a little, show that it is a warm, sunny day, a nice day to go for a walk. Here, like this.

all leaders show how to mime this Mandy:

And maybe we could hear a bird singing . . .

cup hand to ear, smile, look up in the air to find bird Mandy:

. . . or we could see a flower, lean over, pick it, smell the flower.

show children how to mime this, suggest other miming activities to indicate a lovely day Narrator:

It was springtime, and a farmer went into his field to plant his crops.

Farmer comes on stage, while all children mime a big man, walking “big and tall” Sandy:

Farmers back then didn’t have all the big machinery, they did all the work by hand, and they carried the seed in a bag on their shoulder. This is how they sowed their seed.

Farmer and all children mime taking a handful of seed and spreading from side to side on the ground Narrator:

As he was planting his seed, it went all over, some landing on roads where people would walk on it and trample it.

mime people “walking hard” and grinding the seed into the ground, farmer looks sadly at what is going on Narrator:

And the birds came along and ate the seed which was lying on top of the ground, on the road.

mime being birds, bending over at the waist, pecking at the seed, eating it, farmer looks sadly at what is going on Narrator:

Some of the seed fell among the stones. The seeds started to grow . .

mime on knees, eyes closed, eyes slowly open, smile, arms slowly move upward above head, palms together, hands and arms undulating, showing how the plant is coming up through the ground, farmer looks happy Narrator:

. . . but among the stones there wasn’t enough water for the plants to survive, and so the plants withered and died.

mime looking around, mouth opening, licking lips, thirsty, sad, frightened look, slowly start to shrivel and go back to knees, farmer looks sad Narrator:

Some of the seed fell on soil where there were many weeds, and the weeds didn’t give the seed room to grow.

Mandy:

I know, some of you guys can be the seed and others be the weeds.

show children how to mime the weeds pressing around the seeds, seeds trying to find a place, farmer sad Narrator:

. . . and the seeds died.

mime seeds shrivelling, slowly receding, farmer very sad Narrator:

Ahh, but some seed fell in good, rich, well watered soil. And it grew and grew, and produced lots and lots and lots of grain!

mime growing up tall, big smiles. all cheer, clap hands, happy, farmer holds hands above head, triumphant Mandy:

That was truly awesome, wasn’t it guys? . . . Except . . . what does it mean?

Farmer:

I can answer that. The farmer is God, and the seed is the word of God, from the Bible. Those who are on the road hear about God, . . . Then Satan comes and takes the Word of God from their hearts. Satan does not want people to know that God has sent Jesus to take all their sin, and to be a child of God. The seed that fell among the stones and died shows us that many people hear about Jesus, and how He came to save them, and this makes them happy for a while.

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 44

But because they aren’t going to church and Sunday School, and aren’t reading their Bibles, praying to God and hanging out with other Christians, soon they are tempted and they forget about God. The seed that was smothered by the weeds tells us about those who hear God’s word, but the weeds, all the other things in a busy life, keep us from growing, learning more about God, becoming stronger Christians. And because of all the busyness in their life they never become all that God wants them to be. But then there are those who hear the word, and who learn more and more about Jesus, who come to Sunday School and just keep understanding more about God’s purpose in their life. Because their heart is given to Jesus they become more like Him, as a Christian, and as a Christian witness to others. Mandy:

Wow, that was very good, farmer! I sure did learn a lot about parable, about story-pictures. This week I am going to read my Bible to learn about more of the story-pictures Jesus used. After all, He gave us those story-pictures to make it easier for us to understand what he wanted us to know.

Sandy:

Great idea! What about you children? Just look in Luke and you will find the parables. And in Matthew as well.

encourage children to discuss what they have learned about parables Mandy:

Wow, lots of great things we can learn through parables, right? Sandy, I wonder if the B.I.B.L.E. Machine would have a song about parables?

Sandy:

Let’s just check it out.

Sandy types in information, lights flash, sounds are heard, and the music begins, words are projected on the wall Where do we find it Advice we need to see? I know the answer, It’s the B.I.B.L.E. Now God had things to tell us Things He wanted us to see Said, “I want you to understand Here’s a picture just from me.” Jesus talked to the people In ways they understood He showed he cared about them all And he showed his ways were good. God talked to people back then He talks to people now He wants to walk beside you If you will just allow. See the B.I.B.L.E. Has answers just for me I will never be alone It’s in my heart you see. Yes, it was. And it’s nice to see that God still talks to his people today, he wants get to know you and your friends. A good way for this to happen is for each of you children to bring a friend next time. We would love to get to know your friends too!

Mandy:

Wouldn’t that be great? Then you can share God’s story-pictures with your friends too! Bye kids!

Segment 8:

God Is Born

Luke tells of the birth of Jesus Sandy:

Well hello there guys! It’s me, Sandy Sunday, back with my friend, Mandy Monday. I had an exciting day, hope you did as well.

Mandy, addressing children: What special things happened to you this week? encourage children to share experiences Sandy:

Sounds like all of us had great weeks. What about you, Mandy, anything exciting happen to you?

Mandy:

Sandy, I had an incredibly exciting week!

Sandy:

That’s wonderful, care to tell us about it Mandy?

Mandy:

Well, the Wilsons next door, guess what, they had a brand new baby boy!

Sandy:

Wow, that is exciting! I would like to hear more about that baby later! But right now its time for another Amazing Adventure of Sandy Sunday for you. And of course we have the B.I.B.L.E. Machine here, so we can continue on with our “Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences!” Before we start let’s open in prayer, so I would like everyone to bow their head and close their eyes while (one of the leaders) leads us in prayer.

The theme of the session is about how God came to earth to bring salvation, therefore the opening prayer should use this basis. Sandy:

Thank you so much, (name of leader who lead in prayer), that was a really great prayer!

Mandy:

You, know, funny thing, no matter how many times we hear about Jesus being born in a manger, it still is exciting to hear it again. You know, there is another thing I love to hear.

Sandy:

What’s that Mandy?

Mandy:

I like to hear your special song that we sing each week.

Sandy:

I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to play that song, and lets all sing along, OK? I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

Nice thoughts, aren’t they?

Mandy doesn’t answer, just stands there, deep in thought Sandy, looks at Mandy: Earth to Mandy! Hello! Mandy:

Sorry Sandy. I was just thinking about the new little baby next door at the Wilsons.

Sandy:

Pretty wonderful, little babies, aren’t they?

Mandy:

Yes, wonderful, but so small, so defenceless. That little baby can’t do one thing on her own; she relies on Mrs. Wilson to do everything for her. I

can’t help but think, this is how Jesus came to earth, as a tiny, defenceless little baby! Sandy:

Yes he did.

Mandy:

But Jesus was God! I mean, he made the earth and the stars and space. Yet when he came to earth he gave up all this, to become a man, a child, a helpless child.

Sandy:

Helpless, yet God.

Mandy:

Do you think the B.I.B.L.E. Machine could tell us more about the birth of Jesus?

Sandy:

Well, yes, I think so, that’s why we have B.I.B.L.E. Machine, Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences. We just type a search into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the details should come right back to us.

Mandy:

Wow, that’s great! So we can get answers from the B.I.B.L.E. Machine. Isn’t this exciting, boys and girls, to have the B.I.B.L.E. Machine?

Sandy:

We do need all of the boys and girls here to be our B.I.B.L.E. assistants.

Mandy:

Wow!

(takes child to the B.I.B.L.E. machine) See that keypad there? Would you punch in the secret code please?

Mandy:

But how would (child) know the secret code?

Sandy, confused: But I just told everyone the secret code. Please. See, it’s painted right here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. P L E A S E. Right there. child pushes the spot marked “PLEASE”, lights flash, noises come from machine

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 49

Sandy:

There we go! (opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today we are learning about the birth of Jesus, let’s see, here I will type in the code for birth of Jesus. (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Says here, good location for details to be found is from Luke, here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. Let me punch that in . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, here it is, let’s see . .hmmmmm . . . (pause as though reading) Luke . . . shepherds . . . Bethlehem . . . Yes, yes this should do just fine. Now then, (child), it says here that if we push this button the B.I.B.L.E. Machine will get more information from Luke.

child presses button, Luke walks out from behind the B.I.B.L.E. machine, speaks Luke:

There have been many others who have told what they have seen and heard of the birth of Jesus, he the Savior of the world. I think it is wise that I give you an accounting of all these reliable witnesses, told as it happened, one account after another. In this way you will have the whole story, the true story as it was seen by many, many reliable witnesses. The people had been waiting, impatiently, for a king, a Messiah. Some began to wonder if it would ever happen. But God had promised, and God’s promises are true. So it was that an angel visited a young girl, a girl not that much older than yourselves. As you can imagine, this girl, her name was Mary, was very surprised to see an angel there, speaking to her, telling her that some very unusual things were about to happen in her life. The angel said, “Mary, this is a wonderfully happy day for you! God is blessing you, more than any woman in history. Don’t be afraid or anxious for God will be with you every step of the way. Mary, you are going to have a child, the father of your child is God Himself! You will call your son Jesus; he is the Messiah, the one for whom generations have waited.” The angel went on to explain how this baby would be king of all the world, for all time! Mary was amazing! Although obviously she was shocked, and frightened, with what the angel said, still she accepted, and was excited for the future. She was satisfied since this was God’s plan for her life. Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter in Nazareth. Joseph too was shocked with the news that his bride-to-be was pregnant, but when the angel explained the situation, Joseph, like Mary, knew that it was God’s will. Strange sometimes how things happen. It was exactly at this time that the Romans decided to find out how many people there were in the world. So they told everyone that they must go to the ancestral homes, the places where their family had originally come from, and to register. Since Joseph was a descendant of King David, and David’s hometown was Bethlehem, that’s where Joseph and Mary had to go to put their names into the book

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 50

of registry. By this time it was very near time for Mary’s baby to be born. The trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem was a long and painful one for Mary, and for her concerned husband Joseph. No sooner had they arrived in Bethlehem when Mary began to feel labor pains. With all of the people who had come to Bethlehem to be registered, there was not one room available in the whole town. Mary was grateful when a friendly innkeeper gave all that he had, a space in the barn out back. And so it was that there in a drafty old barn, the king of all creation was born. Oh, but Mary and Joseph were not alone! Far from it! God had his angels announce the birth to all who would listen. Certainly some chose not to listen, but to lowly shepherds guarding their sheep, and to regal kings who were following a star, God announced the birth of his son! The shepherds and the kings, such opposites in society, bowed down together in that barn, and worshipped, gave gifts, and gave praise, to the newborn King of Kings! Luke leaves stage, encourage children to discuss what they learned from Luke’s account Mandy:

I have a poem about the birth of Jesus, I think you may like to hear it.

Sandy:

Great, may we hear it please Mandy?

Mandy:

It is called, “The Lamb of God”. Boys and girls I want you to think about what it would have been like to be those shepherds that the night when Jesus was born. I want you to sit around in a circle, pretend that your sheep are close in beside you. And listen as a lamb tells his story:

I lie alone on a green grass mat, In the silence here I lie, And I think to myself, how bright that star, Up high in the eastern sky. Around me weary shepherds sit, Who tonight will see no sleep. They keep their watch through the starry night, Looking after us temple sheep. Then suddenly, from out of the night, Comes those strains, a melodious sound, A song which out of the heavens rings, Bringing glory all around.

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 51

It is angels, it seems, who visit us, Their sounds ring through the night. With one accord, both shepherds and sheep Are brought to their feet in fright. The story they tell is a joyous one, For it tells of a Savior’s birth. The Messiah, the Lord, God's own dear Son Has tonight come down to earth. Quickly the shepherds make their way Until they find the stable. And, little they knew, I came too, As fast as I was able. As the shepherds enter the stable door, I look inside to see, There in a manger, among the hay, Is the blessed holy Baby. Since the shepherds kneel to worship Him, I feel that it would be right, I feel the need to be by His side, And to bring my praise this night. He is fair and sweet, this holy child, As He lays in that wooden stall. How can He save all mankind, This Babe so frail and small? And now a shepherd sees me there, And he feels I should have no part. He sees me there at the Baby's side Does he know what's in my heart? As the shepherds set to turn me out, A voice says, "Let him stay". It's Mary who had silenced them: "He is welcome here today". "My Son will be the shepherd of men, He will lead His flock to the light. So let him stay by my Baby's side, As a watch throughout the night." So there in the manger I lay down, Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 52

And I'm sure some think it odd, That I, the lamb, am here this night, Beside the Lamb of God. Sandy:

Very nice, now I wonder if the B.I.B.L.E. Machine has a closing song for us?

Sandy types in information, lights flash, sounds are heard, and the music begins, words are projected on the wall Where do we find it Advice we need to see? I know the answer, It’s the B.I.B.L.E. Segment 9: God’s messengers God sends angels, His very special ambassadors Sandy:

Hello boys and girls! I have had an awesome week, and I have been excited about getting back to see you guys again today! I see some new faces here, that’s great, so let me introduce myself, it’s me, Sandy Sunday, back with my friend, Mandy Monday.

Mandy, addressing children: You are right Sandy, I have been looking forward to today all week! But what about you guys? What happened with you this week? encourage children to share experiences Sandy:

Sounds like all of us had a good time. You know what I have been reading about this week Mandy?

Mandy:

Hmmmm, let me guess. Winning the Indy 500 car race?

Sandy:

Nope.

Mandy:

Being the first person to barbeque hamburgers on Mars?

Sandy:

Not even close. I have been reading about angels.

Mandy:

That was going to be my next guess.

Sandy:

Angels are quite amazing you know. And I would like to tell you more but first its time for another Amazing Adventure of Sandy Sunday for you. And of course we have the B.I.B.L.E. Machine here, so we can continue on with our “Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences!” Before we start let’s open in prayer, so I would like everyone to bow their head and close their eyes while (one of the leaders) leads us in prayer.

The theme of the session is about how every creature, including angels, has a part in God’s master plan, therefore the opening prayer should use this basis. Sandy:

Thank you so much, (name of leader who lead in prayer), that was a really great prayer!

Mandy:

Can we sing it again?

Sandy:

“It?” What’s that Mandy?

Mandy:

I like to hear your special song that we sing each week.

Sandy:

I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to play that song, and lets all sing along, OK? I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

play CD, leaders lead in singing How am I certain And how can I know? I have His promise God loves me so. He is my Father I am His child, His love so amazing So tender and mild. Father in heaven With me below. Love and protect me, Others to show, You love all people, Caring and kind. Lord of creation Be Lord of my mind. As I am growing Show me your will Strengthen and keep me Guide me until Working for others Your work to do Me an example My Saviour, of you. Mandy:

That was really nice. Thanks Sandy.

Sandy:

And thanks to the children who sang that song.

Mandy:

OK now, let’s talk about angels.

Sandy:

OK, lets see what the B.I.B.L.E. machine has to say about angels. And for that I need a volunteer, who will be our volunteer?

choose a volunteer, either boy or girl Mandy:

(call child by first name). This looks like a fine volunteer!

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 56

(takes child to the B.I.B.L.E. machine) See that keypad there? Would you punch in the secret code please?

Mandy:

I remember the code, it is P-L-E-A-S-E, right?

Sandy, confused: Yes it is, and it’s painted right here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. P L E A S E. Right there. child pushes the spot marked “PLEASE”, lights flash, noises come from machine Sandy:

There we go! (opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today we are learning about the birth of Jesus, let’s see, here I will type in the code for angels. (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Says here, good location for details to be found is in the Gospels, that’s Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. Let me punch that in . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, here it is, let’s see . .hmmmmm . . . (pause as though reading) .angels . . . Gospels . . . Yes, yes this should do just fine. Now then, (child), it says here that if we push this button the B.I.B.L.E. Machine will get more information about angels.

child presses button, there are computer, printer noises, sheets of paper come out Note there are many ways this could be handled but we suggest that you have the following verses printed up so that the B.I.B.L.E Machine will be able to “print” them on demand. Matthew 1:20-24 Matthew 2:13, 19 Matthew 4:6, 11; Mark 1:13; Luke 4:10 Matthew 13:39, 41, 49; 26:53 Matthew 16:27, 25:31; Mark 8:38; Luke 7:26 Matthew 24:31; Mark 13:27 Matthew 18:10 Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32 Matthew 25:41 Luke 22:43 Matthew 28:2, 5; Luke 24:23; John 20:12 Luke 1:11-19 Luke 1:26-38 Luke 2:8-15 Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Luke 12:8-10 Luke 20:36 John 1:51 John 12:29 These verses from the Gospels show angels recorded in critical and interesting activities. It also shows how angels bring very important attributes, qualities, to their ministering. Individual verses could be handed out to teams of children, each team having one or more leaders, the team would investigate the bible reference and think of the role which the angels played in that situation. Some possible answers are shown below: Joseph receives news of Mary's pregnancy from angel Matthew 1:20-24 angels are instructive/assuring Joseph is warned to take his family to Egypt, and later told it was safe to return home Matthew 2:13, 19 angels are instructive/protective Angels were there at the temptation of Jesus Matthew 4:6, 11; Mark 1:13; Luke 4:10 angels are support and service to Jesus Angels are the protector and the army Matthew 13:39, 41, 49; 26:53 angels are strong and reliable With Jesus at his second coming Matthew 16:27, 25:31; Mark 8:38; Luke 7:26 angels are responsible and reliable in major situations Angels will come to take home the believers on that final day Matthew 24:31; Mark 13:27 angels are responsible and reliable in major situations Angels are the protectors of the weak, the small and the young Matthew 18:10 the importance of angels to children Angels are not given all details of what is to happen Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32 Angels are not God, not privy to all that God knows Some angels chose to sin, following Satan rather than God Matthew 25:41 Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Angels, like humans are tempted and sometimes fail With Jesus at the crucifixion Luke 22:43 angels are protective, brave At the empty tomb Matthew 28:2, 5; Luke 24:23; John 20:12 angels are informational/instructive With Zechariah Luke 1:11-19 angels are informational but also corrective, handing out punishment for non-belief With Mary Luke 1:26-38 angels are instructive/supportive/joyful With the shepherds Luke 2:8-15 angels are instructive/joyful/rejoicing/musical At the judgement seat Luke 12:8-10 angels are reliable/in charge/positions of authority Angels live forever Luke 20:36 angels are superior beings Angels are communicators between heaven and man John 1:51 angels are in positions of authority Jesus talked with angels John 12:29 angels are reliable/in positions of authority leaders do a wrap-up of the activity then Sandy and Mandy would bring it all together. Sandy:

Wow, isn’t it amazing how much investigation we are able to do using the B.I.B.L.E. Machine!

Mandy doesn’t answer, just stands there, deep in thought

Sandy, looks at Mandy: She is doing it again! Mandy! Hello! Mandy:

Sorry Sandy. I can’t help thinking about how important angels are.

Sandy:

Pretty amazing isn’t it?

Mandy:

Yes, amazing and wonderful. God sure does have things all well planned, doesn’t he?

Sandy:

Yes he does.

Mandy:

Guess that’s why he is God. Do you think the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song about angels?

Sandy types in information, lights flash, sounds are heard, and the music begins, words are projected on the wall Where do we find it Advice we need to see? I know the answer, It’s the B.I.B.L.E. The B.I.B.L.E. Has answers just for me I will never be alone It’s in my heart you see. The B.I.B.L.E. The truth that’s right for me I’m safe and strong Because I have the B.I.B.L.E. Sandy:

And an incredible message! Angels are watching over each of us! I want all of you children to always remember that.

Mandy:

I can’t wait to see what the B.I.B.L.E. Machine will teach us next week. Bye kids!

Segment 10: God’s Unlikely Leaders David being chosen to be king when he was still a shepherd boy Sandy:

Hello boys and girls! Remember me, Sandy Sunday? And as always I have my best friend, Mandy Monday here as well. Guess what I have been learning about this week.

Mandy:

Hey, that could be tough, care to give me a hint?

Sandy:

Well, it has to do with elections.

Mandy:

I know, I know, . . boring speeches on television.

Sandy:

No! But I guess there are some of those, aren’t there? But I haven’t been learning about boring speeches on TV.

Mandy:

Kissing babies.

Sandy:

No, not . . . . . (does double take) . . Kissing babies? What has kissing babies got to do with elections?

Mandy:

My dad says that kissing babies is the most important thing people do when they are trying to get elected. Dad says that the guy who kisses the most babies has the best shot at getting elected.

Sandy:

That’s awful! I mean, surely people look for more than baby kissing skill when choosing a leader.

Mandy:

Like what?

Sandy:

Well, I think our leaders need to be smart, and understand what is important in running our country.

Mandy:

Yes, I guess that would be important. (gets an idea) Hey, Sandy, I know what! Why don’t we ask the B-I-B-L-E Machine what it thinks our leaders should be like?

Sandy:

You know Mandy, I think that is an excellent idea. And of course we have the B.I.B.L.E. Machine right here to help us, so we can continue on with our “Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences!” Before we start let’s open in prayer, so I would like everyone to bow their head and close their eyes while (one of the leaders) leads us in prayer.

The theme of the session is about how leaders were selected in the Bible, so the prayer should be on traits of leadership. Sandy:

Thank you so much, (name of leader who lead in prayer), that was a really great prayer! Now then, would you children like to learn about leaders in the Bible and how they were chosen?

Mandy, loudly clearing throat: I believe we have forgotten something! Sandy:

“Something?” What “something” have we forgotten, Mandy?

Mandy:

I look forward to hearing your special song each week, and I know that the boys and girls do too.

Sandy:

You know, I did almost forget that! OK, I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to play that song, and lets all sing along, OK? I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

Page 63

Me an example My Saviour, of you. Mandy:

That was really special. Thanks Sandy. I just love singing! Now then, let’s talk about how God chose leaders back in Bible times.

Sandy:

Excellent idea! But maybe we should start by asking if anyone here knows what a leader is?

encourage children to express their opinions about leaders and leadership, guiding them in arriving at some Christian attributes in leadership Mandy:

Those are all excellent comments. Now that we know what skills a leader should have and know, I wonder if we can think of the leaders that we know?

guide the discussion, it will likely include presidents, prime ministers, governors, mayors and others Mandy:

Yes, there are lots of leaders, aren’t here, all over the world. But likely you and I don’t know any of those leaders really well, personally, do you? But can you think of any leaders that you know personally?

try to guide the children to see that they have many leaders, and if possible lead them from the leaders who are teachers, to the leaders in the church, including the pastors and also the Sunday School leaders, right in their own class. Sandy:

That’s amazing Mandy! You are right, teachers and the leaders here at church are very important!

Mandy:

Yes, very important indeed! But there is another group of leaders who are likely even more important in our lives. Can anyone tell me who that would be?

encourage children to realize that parents, mothers, fathers, other family members are very crucial in leadership, and how their leadership has a huge impact on each of us, and on society as a whole Sandy:

Wow, Mandy, you sure are teaching all of us a lot about leadership! Now I wonder what the B.I.B.L.E. machine has to say about leaders? And for that I need a volunteer, who will be our volunteer?

choose a volunteer, either boy or girl Mandy:

(call child by first name). This looks like a fine volunteer!

(opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today we are learning about leadership, let’s see if I just type some things here . . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Says here, we should look in 1 Sanuel Chapter 16, here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. Let me punch that in . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, here it is, let’s see . .hmmmmm . . . (pause as though reading) .Samuel. . . search for king . . . . . . Yes, yes this should do just fine. Now then, (child), it says here that if we push this button the B.I.B.L.E. Machine will get more information about how God showed his people who He wanted to be the king, to lead the people.

child presses button, there are computer, printer noises, sheet of paper comes out Sandy:

Mandy, why don’t you read what the B.I.B.L.E. Machine has to say?

Mandy:

Excellent, I sure would like to know this. (takes page and reads) God knew that his people needed a new leader, a king, because Saul was not doing what he should be. Many men wanted to be king but God wanted that they have the very best person to lead them. So God asked the prophet Samuel to go to Bethlehem, to the home of Jesse, and to find the son of Jesse who God had already chosen to be the new King. When Samuel arrived at Jesse’s house he found that Jesse had eight sons, all very strong and handsome. Samuel took one look at the eldest son, Eliab and thought, “Here he is! God's anointed!” But God talked to Samuel and said, “Looks aren't everything. Don't be impressed with his looks and stature. I've already eliminated him. God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart.” So Samuel met with each of Jesse’s seven oldest sons, Abinadab, Shammah, and all the rest. But with each of the young men. Samuel said, “This man isn't God's choice either. God hasn't chosen any of these.”

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 65

Then Samuel asked Jesse, “Is this it? Are there no more sons?” ”Well, yes”, said Jesse, “there's my youngest son, David, but he is just a boy. He's out tending the sheep.” Samuel ordered Jesse, “Go get him. We're not moving from this spot until he's here.” So Jesse sent for David. David was brought in, the very picture of health-bright-eyed, good-looking. As soon as David walked in the room, God said to all who were standing there, “Get up on your feet! Anoint him! This is the one.” So Samuel took his flask of oil and anointed him, with his brothers standing around watching. The Spirit of God entered David like a rush of wind, and from that moment on God was gave His power to David, allowing David to be a powerful and wise leader. Sandy:

I wonder what God saw in David that He didn’t see in the others, and why did God choose David to be their leader?

Mandy:

Well, like it says in the Bible, God doesn’t see things the way humans do, God sees what is inside, in a person’s heart, in their minds. People get too wrapped up in how a person looks, what they say, but to be a Godly leader takes faith, strength and a will do to what God wants that leader to do.

Sandy:

When others saw David all they saw was just a shepherd boy, but when God saw David He saw a king! You know something? I think that the B.I.B.L.E. Machine has a song about that. Let’s listen!

Sandy types on the keyboard and “Shepherd Boy” by Ray Boltz and Steve Millikan is played. Alternatively you may have live singer(s). Play only first verse and chorus. At end of song discuss with children the selection of David as king, and how we too need to live our lives in a way that makes us available and worthy to be chosen as a leader with Christian values, to be used by God. Sandy:

Wow, isn’t it amazing how much God was able to see what was in David’s heart? . . . . Mandy. . . . Mandy . . . .

Mandy doesn’t answer, just stands there, deep in thought Sandy, looks at Mandy: She is doing it again! Mandy! Hello! Mandy:

Sorry Sandy. I can’t help thinking about what God sees in my heart when He looks at me.

Sandy:

Kinda scary, isn’t it?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 66

Mandy:

Yes, scary, and amazing, and wonderful. There’s nothing we can hide from God.

Sandy:

Nothing at all. Boys and girls, do you think the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song about David, and Godly leaders?

Sandy types in information, lights flash, sounds are heard, and the music begins, words are projected on the wall Where do we find it Advice we need to see? I know the answer, It’s the B.I.B.L.E. And the B.I.B.L.E. Has answers just for me I will never be alone It’s in my heart you see. The B.I.B.L.E. The truth that’s right for me I’m safe and strong Because I have the B.I.B.L.E. Sandy:

And that’s just what King David was, a shepherd leader of his people.

Segment 11: The Family Tree exploring the lineage, genealogy of Jesus, and the kind of people who Jesus had in his family tree Sandy is carrying a large scrapbook, with the words, “MY FAMILY”, on the cover Sandy:

Hi boys and girls! Remember me, Sandy Sunday? See what I brought along? It’s my family tree.

Mandy:

That’s a tree? Looks like a book to me.

Sandy:

Sorry, boys and girls, I forgot to introduce my best friend, Mandy Monday, but then you know Mandy, she’s here every time as well. But I am just so excited about working on my genealogy here! (shows off the book)

Mandy:

Genealogy? I thought you said it was a tree? Anyhow, how can those be jeans, I mean, they aren’t big enough to wear. And kinda squarish too.

Sandy, confused: Wear? I don’t understand. Mandy:

Well you said that was your jeans.

Sandy:

No! Genealogy. . . . Family tree. . . . My ancestors?

Mandy:

Oh that kinda genealogy. That was gonna be my second choice . . . . honest . . . it was . . . kinda.

Sandy:

Ya, right Mandy! Anyhow, I am busy looking back in my ancestry to see who were my great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents, and even way back beyond that.

Mandy:

Wow, have you found anybody interesting yet?

Sandy:

Actually yes, I found that one of my ancestors actually came to America on the Mayflower.

Mandy:

The Mayflower? You mean that your ancestor came to America in a moving van?

Sandy:

No, not Mayflower moving van, the Mayflower ship, back centuries ago.

Mandy:

Oh that Mayflower, that was going to be . . .

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 69

Sandy:

Don’t tell me, it was going to be your second choice.

Mandy:

It’s my story and I am gonna stick to it. Besides, it’s time that we opned in prayer, (name of leader), would you lead us in prayer?

since the theme of the day is Godly ancestors, the prayer should focus on the importance of Godly men and women in our families and how these people leave such an incredible legacy for future generations Sandy:

Thank you so much, (name of leader who lead in prayer), that was a really great prayer! Now then, do you children realize that just as I have a family tree with many ancestors, that is true of every person. Each of you have a family tree, ancestors.

Mandy, loudly clearing throat: Well I would like to hear more about that . . . but . . .. first things first! Sandy:

“First things”, Mandy? What “first things”?

Mandy:

Well we haven’t hear our “Sandy’s Prayer” song yet!

Sandy:

You know, I did almost forget that! OK, I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to play that song, and lets all sing along, OK? I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

That was really great singing, children. I just love singing! Now then, let’s talk some more about ancestors. But I was wondering, if each of us here have a family tree, and ancestors, well, did people in Bible times also have ancestors?

Sandy:

Yes, everyone who ever lived had ancestors.

Mandy:

Except maybe Adam and Eve, huh?

Sandy:

Well, yes, Mandy, I guess you do have a point there.

Mandy:

OK, but, so, does that mean that even Jesus had ancestors, a family tree?

Sandy:

Yes, he certainly did.

Mandy:

So where do you start with checking up on who were your ancestors?

Sandy:

Well, you start with your own parents, your mom and dad.

Mandy, excited: I have a great idea! Sandy:

Should I be worried about this?

Mandy:

Sandy, why should you be worried about me having a great idea?

Sandy:

May I remind you of your great idea to put bubble gum on the carpet to take out the grape juice stains?

Mandy:

Oh fine! One mistake and all of a sudden my ideas are all disasters! Anyhow, this idea will be great, you just wait and see! My idea is that we could use the B.I.B.L.E. machine here to tell us about Jesus’ ancestors, and we could make up a family tree with Jesus’ ancestors.

Sandy:

Hey Mandy, I like that idea, don’t you like that idea boys and girls? Now, like I said, we start off with a person’s mother and father. Who can tell me who was Jesus’ mother?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 71

encourage and reward answers Mandy:

OK, so Mary was Jesus’ mother. Who was Jesus’ father?

encourage input, children may answer that it was Joseph, don’t discourage this answer, but rather as follows: Sandy:

Those are all excellent comments. But I think what we should do is ask the B.I.B.L.E. machine to see what the answer may be. So who will be our volunteer today?

choose a volunteer, either boy or girl Mandy:

(call child by first name). I know s/he will do a great job!

Sandy:

Yes, (child), would you help us get the B.I.B.L.E., Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences program started? (takes child to the B.I.B.L.E. machine) See that keypad there? Would you punch in the secret code please?

Mandy:

I remember the code, it is P-L-E-A-S-E, right?

Sandy, confused: Yes it is, and it’s painted right here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. P L E A S E. Right there. child pushes the spot marked “PLEASE”, lights flash, noises come from machine Sandy:

There we go! (opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today the question we are asking is . . . who was Jesus’ father? Let’s see if I just type some directions here . . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Says here, we should look in Matthew 27:54 and Mark 1:1, here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. Let me punch that in . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, here it is, let’s see . .hmmmmm . . . (pause as though reading) .S Yes, yes this should do just fine. Now then,I wonder if we could get two more volunteers to read these two quotes from the Bible?

chose two children old enough to read the passages Reader 1:

Truly this was the Son of God

Reader 2:

Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Mandy:

Interesting! So who is Jesus’ father

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 72

encourage some discussion about Jesus being the son of God, and what was the relationship between Joseph and Jesus Mandy:

OK, so if God was Jesus’ father, then we can perhaps sat that Joseph was Jesus’ earthly father, right, the person who looked after Jesus when he was young.

Sandy:

True, and that’s kind of how it is recorded in the Bible as well. Did you know that the very first thing that is written in the New Testament is Jesus’ family tree?

Mandy:

There is a family tree in the New Testament?

Sandy:

Yes there is. Can anyone tell me which is the first book in the New Testament?

encourage children to identify Matthew, if they are unable to do so take a Bible and have them find it Sandy:

Now earlier the B.I.B.L.E. machine printed out Jesus’ family tree, and I have a copy for each of you.

hand out copies of Matthew 1:1-17 Depending on time available, discuss with children some of the prominent men mentioned in that portion of scripture, including Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Jesse, King David, Solomon, and any others who have been mentioned in Sunday School or church recently.

Mandy:

Hey, this is awesome, but I notice something else that is pretty impressive in Jesus’ family tree.

Sandy:

What’s that Mandy?

Mandy:

The many women who were mentioned as well. See there’s Ruth and Rahab, Tamar and Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba, and of course Mary, Jesus’ mother.

Sandy:

Good point Mandy, there were both Godly men and Godly women in Jesus’ family tree. Boys and girls, do you think the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song about the people in Jesus’ family tree?

Sandy types in information, lights flash, sounds are heard, and the music begins, words are projected on the wall

For every man and woman And for every boy and girl There’s Godly men and women who’ve Gone before them in the world. You and I are blessed that we Had before us Godly ones Who told the truth of Jesus Christ To their daughters and their sons. And the B.I.B.L.E. Our ancestors, telling their children about Jesus! Wow!

Sandy:

Yes Mandy, we are so fortunate that we have had Godly ancestors. And some day it will be our duty to tell the next generation about Jesus.

Mandy:

You are right Sandy, and that’s why it is so important that we learn about Jesus in Sunday School. Isn’t it great that we have the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to help us each week?

Segment 12: Singing to the Lord telling of how David wrote Psalm 23 and many other beautiful songs to God Sandy comes in singing “Sandy’s Prayer” How am I certain And how can I know? I have His promise God loves me so. He is my Father I am His child, His love so amazing So tender and mild. Father in heaven With me below. Love and protect me, Others to show, You love all people, Caring and kind. Lord of creation Be Lord of my mind. As I am growing Show me your will Strengthen and keep me Guide me until Working for others Your work to do Me an example My Saviour, of you. Mandy:

Oh Sandy, that is such a beautiful song!

Sandy:

Thank you Mandy, I love singing that song. It tells about God’s love for me, how He protects me every day, strengthens me and guides me. But it also reminds me that I need to tell others about Him.

Mandy:

That’s why we should all be talking to our friends about Jesus, right?

Sandy:

That’s right Mandy.

Mandy:

Can we sing that song again Sandy, all of us, the boys and girls too?

Sandy:

That would be nice.

music plays and Sandy’s Prayer is sung by all Mandy:

I just love singing songs about Jesus, in church and during the week too!

Sandy:

Well singing songs to God has always been important, even way back in the Old Testament.

Mandy:

They sang way back in the Old Testament times too? Likely songs like “Jesus Loves Me” huh?

Sandy, laughing: Well, actually “Jesus Loves Me” isn’t quite that old. But perhaps the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can help us to learn more about some of the songs that were sung in Old Testament times, and about the people who wrote those songs. But first, we need to have (name of leader) lead us in talking with God. the theme of the session is singing praises to God so the prayer should have this basis Mandy:

That is so awesome to be able to talk to God, anytime, anywhere, if we are all alone or with our friends just like now!

Sandy:

Yes it is Mandy, that’s cause God is always right here with us, so there is never a time we are without him!

Mandy:

That is enough to make me sing!

Sandy:

And that’s how people way back in Bible times felt too. Why don’t we ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to tell us more about how songs were used to praise God in the Old Testament?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

child pushes the spot marked “PLEASE”, lights flash, noises come from machine Sandy:

There we go! (opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today the question we are asking is . . . singing songs to God. Let’s see if I just type some directions here . . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Says here, we should look in Exodus 1:1, Judges 5:3, 2 Samuel 22 and in most to the Psalms, here on the B.I.B.L.E. machine. Let me punch that in . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, here it is, let’s see . .hmmmmm . . . (pause as though reading) .S Yes, yes this should do just fine. Now then, I wonder if we could get two more volunteers to read these quotes from the Bible?

chose two children old enough to read the passages Reader 1, from Exodus 15:1 The Song of Moses and Miriam Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord : I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Reader 2, Judges 5:3: Hear this, you kings! Listen, you rulers! I will sing to the Lord , I will sing; I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel. Sandy:

And the whole chapter 22 of 2 Samuel is called “David’s Song of Praise”.

Mandy:

You mean David, as in King David, the shepherd king?

Sandy:

Exactly! David had always been a person who loved singing. Even back when he was a boy looking after his father’s sheep David would sing songs, the Bible says this calmed the sheep and made them less afraid.

Mandy:

OK, but what was this about the Psalms being songs?

Sandy:

Many of the Psalms were songs which David wrote. One famous psalm is Psalm 23.

Mandy:

I know that psalm, “The Lord is my shepherd”, right? You mean David wrote that?

Sandy:

Yes, he did. Why don’t we learn more about Psalm 23? I am going to get the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to show us this psalm and we can learn about it together.

Sandy types in information, lights flash, and the words are projected on the wall

Page 78

Sandy:

Such a beautiful song! Easy to see how David not only was a shepherd, David thought like a shepherd! I can’t help but wonder what David would say if he were right here, with us today, explaining what he meant in the words he wrote.

David comes out from behind the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, likely dressed in traditional costume, if available have lyre (stringed instrument) music playing softly in background David:

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. It is true. The Lord God is my shepherd. Just as I, David, spent my youth, working as a shepherd, tending the flocks of sheep in my father’s fields, so does God tend to my needs. My duty as a shepherd was to see to the safety and comfort of each sheep in my care. Although my flock numbered in the thousands, I was responsible, and held accountable, for each sheep, whether young or old. Early on I learned that a sheep is an animal which will not settle down unless they are content. And to be content the sheep must be well fed and watered, and must feel safe from enemies such as wolves and lions. Now firstly, to be well fed means that I, the shepherd, must guide the flock to places where there is good grazing. In my father’s fields were areas where nothing grew, where there was desert, and where there were only rocks to be found. These areas could not provide grazing for my sheep because there was no grass for my flock. As a good shepherd I saw to it that my flock avoided these areas, but stayed in those areas where the grass was tall and lush, perfect for growing big, strong, fat, and very contented, sheep.

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 79

But, as well, remember that I said the sheep must feel safe. How does the sheep get that safe feeling? While I tried as mush as possible to avoid areas where enemies of my sheep, the wolves and lions, were likely to be, still the fact is that there were wolves and lions about. These animals realized that sheep were not able to protect themselves, and so they came out to get an easy meal of fresh lamb. But that is where I, as their shepherd, came in. Using my dogs and also my slingshot, it was my job to protect my flock from danger. But although my dogs and my slingshot were able to keep the wolves from getting to my flock, still the sheep could see and sense the wolves lingering out in the shadows. And the knowledge of them being there had an unsettling effect on my sheep. So to make the sheep feel safe, I would sing to them. From time to time there were storms, and sometimes when I took my flock to water the water was all churned up and the sound of the waves was frightening to my flock. To keep my flock calm and content I would try to find protected areas where the storm was not as noticeable. Still, sometimes, in spite of my best efforts, there were attacks by wolves, and there were storms. At these times I would quickly bring them back to contentment by walking among the, and by talking and singing to them, restoring their feeling of calm and content. Amazing you know, how the sheep were calmed by my voice, by my presence there among them. When moving my flock, I thought of possible dangers and tried to choose the safest routes. Reminds me of how God has real concerns that we take the right paths in life and through His teachings in the Bible “leads us in the paths of righteousness”. My shepherd's equipment was simple, just a rod and a staff. With my rod I protected my sheep. With my staff I pulled sheep back to safety when they had lost their footing. And when the flock needed to go in a different direction, or needed encouragement to move a little faster, both rod and staff could be used. In the same way it is good to know God will provide protection, correction and direction in my life. There isn’t a much nicer thought than having “a table in the presence of my enemies”. Can’t you just see my sheep calmly gathered around a huge all-you-can-eat buffet of the favorite sheep goodies while all around are wolves, afraid to come near? Can't you just hear the sheep calmly telling the wolves to back off and leave them alone? See that’s the kind of safety and protection that the shepherd gives. Psalm 23 is really not about sheep at all, it’s about people, people just like you and I. And when I say that “My cup overflows” it means that I will always have more than enough in what I need most: comfort, love and a peaceful heart, even through difficult times. So the great thing about Psalm 23 is that I learn the two important lessons in life: how to live a contented life here on earth, and the wonder of a home in heaven when we die. Throughout life I will have goodness and Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

mercy. And when the end of life comes I will “dwell in the house of the Lord forever”. Think about it, God, he truly is some shepherd, isn’t he? Shepherd leaves the stage area Mandy:

Amazing! A story about sheep and a shepherd. God, the Good Shepherd.

Sandy:

Yes Mandy, we are so fortunate that we have had God as our shepherd, every day, wherever we may go. Now, boys and girls, do you think the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song about the Good Shepherd?

Segment 13: Knowing The Future Isaiah telling of future events and happenings Sandy and Mandy enter, there is an obvious disagreement Mandy:

I don’t care what you say, Sandy, this guy could tell me everything about me.

Sandy:

Like what?

Mandy:

My age, my weight, name of my cat.

Sandy:

But Mandy, you don’t have a cat.

Mandy:

That’s what I told him, and he said that if I did have a cat her name would be Peter.

Sandy:

“Her” name, “Peter”? Now how much sense does that make?

Mandy:

I really do believe that I would call my cat Peter. If I had a cat, that is, of course.

Sandy:

Just where did you meet this fella, Mandy?

Mandy:

At the circus.

Sandy:

You met the guy at the circus and he just strolled up to you and started telling you all these things about yourself?

Mandy:

Mostly . . . . not exactly.

Sandy:

Well then, exactly how did you meet him?

Mandy:

He was working in this side show at the circus. And he kinda called me over.

Sandy:

Kinda, huh? And then he immediately started rattling off all these things about you?

Mandy:

Well, mostly, not exactly immediately though.

Sandy:

Not immediately? What happened before he started telling you about you?

Mandy:

Well, I had to pay him a little bit of money, actually, first.

Sandy:

Mandy! You mean you gave money to a guy you had never seen before to tell you . . . . what you really didn’t know? I don’t believe this!

Mandy:

It was a bargain, I tell ya! For twenty bucks he told me all these things about myself.

Sandy:

Twenty bucks! Surely you didn’t give him twenty dollars Mandy! And just what did he tell you about yourself?

Mandy:

Oh, tons of stuff. He told me my name, my age, my weight, my height, a ton of stuff, isn’t that cool? I was on my way to play soccer and I stopped off at the circus for a minute before I went to the field. Amazing, when I walked in he immediately knew my name. Isn’t that awesome?

Sandy:

Uhhhhhhhhh, yes, amazing. Tell me, did you have your soccer uniform on?

Mandy:

Of course! We play soccer right next door to where the circus is, so I was all ready to play.

Sandy:

And if I remember rightly your soccer sweater has your name on it, right?

Mandy:

Yep, in big red letters, I just love my new sweater it . . . . . Ooops, do you think that . . . .

Sandy:

Yes, I think that . . .

Mandy:

But he told me my age and . . . oh, yeh, that’s on my shirt too, huh? But he also told me my height when I stood against that wall that had a measuring . . . . Ooooops. . . . . But he told me what I was going to be doing . . . . That guy really did rip me off didn’t he, Sandy?

Sandy:

Yes he did Mandy.

Mandy:

I should have known that no one can what is going to happen in the future!

Sandy:

Actually Mandy, yes some people can. Matter of fact, way back in the Old Testament many people prophesied what was going to happen.

Isaiah comes out from behind the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, likely dressed in traditional costume The Prophet Isaiah Isaiah: What a blessing to be a prophet of God! I, Isaiah, a prophet, it was my job to speak to my people about things God wanted to do with us, through us, and for us. Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 86

I was not alone, there were many prophets throughout the ages. Even my wife was a prophetess. (frowns as though listening to a question) Why were there prophets, you ask? God had messages for the people, things God wanted the people to do, reminders that God had great expectations of them, and great hopes for their future. God would tell me these things, and then I would pass along God’s comments to my people. Unfortunately sometimes they did not listen. Sometimes God told me of his plans for the future. I could hardly believe some of the wonderful things God was planning to do for our people! Often He spoke to me about how he would be sending a Messiah, a Savior, one who would come to earth to save us from our sinful natures. I remember one time when God was telling me of his chosen Messiah! He said, “Look well at my very best servant; I love him so much, I take such delight in him. I've placed my Spirit on him; he'll bring justice to the nations. He won't yell, won't raise his voice; there'll be no commotion in the streets. He won't walk over anyone's feelings, won't push you into a corner. Before you know it, his justice will triumph; the mere sound of his name will signal hope, even among far-off unbelievers. He will be the one who will bring my perfect plan to the entire world.” God told me how the Messiah would come as a child, and what a beautiful, happy thought that was! God called the Messiah a redeemer of the people, and how through him salvation would reach to the ends of the earth, how he would be a light to the nations so that all people will turn to God. (saddens) But not all of God’s news was happy. I was told how the Messiah would be mistreated by the very people he came to save, and how the people would pick on him, and even . . . kill him! God explained to me that it was our sins that would do that to the Messiah; our sins that ripped and tore and crushed him--our sins! The Messiah would take the punishment, and that was the only way God could save us. Through his bruises, his suffering, we would be healed. We're all like sheep who've wandered off and gotten lost. We've all done our own thing, gone our own way. And God said he would pile all our sins, everything we've done wrong, on the Messiah. Think of it! Our sins! On the Messiah! Yes, God’s messages told me to explain to the people about this wonderful Messiah, his birth and the glory surrounding this wonderful event. God also told me to prophesy that the Messiah would be beaten, tortured, . . . killed! God went on to tell me how they would bury him in a rich man’s grave. So sad! But there was a happy ending to this sad prophesy! Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 87

The Messiah would rise from the dead! That is right! He who was dead would come back to life! And he would reign glorious, forever. Wonderful stories you say? Not stories at all. Facts! Throughout history, and right through until today, there have been people who, because of some special powers which they say they have, claim to know what will happen in the future. Be very careful in listening to those who claim special powers. See, you must understand, I do not have some personal power which lets me tell about the future. I have no power. The reason I was able to foretell the future is that God spoke to me, he told me what I was to say to my people. The source of my power was God himself! And my message? God was sending a Messiah. Who would be born. Who would die. Who would rise again. Who would go to heaven. And who would return one day to live among us. Forever. Isaiah leaves the stage area Mandy:

Amazing! A prophet. Telling God’s wonderful story of the coming Messiah.

Sandy:

Yes Mandy, we are so fortunate that we know that Isaiah’s prophesies were all true, Jesus was the coming Messiah. And, just as Isaiah had prophesied, Jesus was born, was crucified and rose again. Now, boys and girls, do you think the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song about the prophets?

What is that you have Mandy?

Mandy, keeps attention on the magazine: Ummmmmmm, oh, it’s Careers Unlimited Magazine. Sandy:

Careers Unlimited?

Mandy, getting annoyed: Yes, Careers Unlimited! Now if you will excuse me, I have some big decisions I have to make here! Sandy:

Decisions? About what?

Mandy, annoyed: What exactly is the name of the magazine? Sandy:

Careers Unlimited. See, right on the front it says . . Careers . . .

Yes, it does, doesn’t it. So can you just kinda guess what kind of decisions I am making, seeing as how I am carrying around a . . . Careers Unlimited .. magazine? Really, now do you don’t mind if I just . .

How does she come up with these? Look, sorry Sandy, but I really am stressed out here, see I’m not just hoping for a career, I am hoping for the right career for me.

Sandy:

Maybe I can help you decide.

Mandy:

Hey you know that’s not a bad idea, I mean you are my friend and I respect your opinion and all.

Sandy:

OK, now what kind of a career do you think you would enjoy?

I have it pretty much narrowed down to two choices.

And what are those choices Mandy?

Well, I am hoping to be either an astronaut or a brain surgeon.

Sandy:

Lots of blood.

Mandy:

I was hoping there would be no blood in the brain.

Sandy:

Sounds to me like you are hoping for a lot.

Maybe hoping for too much huh? Guess all that hoping is a bad thing.

Now you said we were going to be talking about hope, exactly what did you mean?

Sandy:

Well Mandy, back in the Old Testament the Israelites were living in hard times, being at war, being in slavery. And God had promised through his prophets that he would send a leader, a Messiah.

Mandy:

We learned about prophets last time didn’t we boys and girls?

Sandy:

Does anyone remember the prophet who came to talk to us last time? What was his name?

(opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today the question we are asking is . . . waiting for the Messiah. Let’s see if I just type some directions here . . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Let me punch in some information . . .(types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, we go, now then . .hmmmmm . . . If I hit “enter” Now then, I hope this works!

actor, (male or female) comes out from behind the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, likely dressed in traditional costume The Messiah of the Manager Actor:

You have no idea what I just heard! Preposterous! I met a group of shepherds, running all over Bethlehem, shouting out the strangest message I ever did hear!

Page 93

“The Messiah has come!” The Messiah, the long awaited Prince of Peace! Born! Born in a . . (incredulous) . . manger? The long awaited Messiah, he who would rescue us from our enemies. A child? The Messiah? A child? In a manger? Absurd! Israel has waited centuries, has believed the prophesies as told to us by our forefather Isaiah. What a cruel, heartless joke, to think that anyone could imagine our people waiting, hoping, praying all these centuries only to be told the Mighty Messiah was a . . . child. I will not, I can not believe that! The very idea! “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! ”Meet the Messiah of the Manger!” Not too likely! How can we remain hopeful, anticipating release from oppression, if reality is that what we have is the Messiah of the Manger? The Messiah of the Manger! (watches off stage, thinking) Look at all of them, over there! Running about, excited, welcoming the Infant King. It can’t be, I mean . . . can it? I mean, our hopes, what does this do to our hopes? (thinks, agitated) I must remember exactly what the prophesies said . . . . I know that it was said that Bethlehem, this little town, would bring forth a king . . . but surely . . . And, now that I think of it, Isaiah did make mention of a child being brought forth to lead us, but . . . . Our people have not waited all these generations, hoping, praying . . . hoping . . . only to be informed that this . . . (motions offstage) . . . this child is the answer to our prayers. If this child is the Messiah, what kind of child is this? (listens offstage) The shepherds say there were angels, multitudes of angels, praising God, singing, “Glory to the Highest God!” Do I dare hope that this, the newborn baby . . . is . . . the Messiah? Can the Lord God Yahweh bring deliverance through a . . baby? (shakes head, comes to realization) What am I saying? Can God do this or that? Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 94

Forgive me Lord God, I know that you can do all things! But . . . . It is true, isn’t it? Just as the shepherds, the angels reported. He has come! He, the one hoped for, . . . . he . . . is . . . here! The Messiah of the Manger! Here, to live among us . . forever! (starts to walk off, turns back, thinking, worried look) Our father Isaiah said something about the Messiah being crushed, broken, for us. Could it be that . . .? Nooooooooooo! Not possible! He is here. Finally! Among us! Our hopes, our prayers, finally made real, here, among us! Of course he will be among us, living, right here, forever. That has been our hope, now the hope of all creation. That hope now a fact of our daily lives. Let us celebrate the Messiah of the Manger! Here among us, to conquer our enemies, the answer to our prayers. Of course he will be with us, lead us, day by day. Our hope, our continuing hope, is built on this. Our Messiah of the Manger. Our hope . . . . actor leaves the stage area Mandy:

I guess I can understand that the people would be kind of disappointed, after hoping all those centuries, waiting for the Messiah, then to see a little baby.

Sandy:

Yes, and born in a common barn.

Mandy:

They likely were thinking this was a cruel joke.

Sandy:

Yes Mandy, the people who lived at that time were not fortunate like we are, we have the full Bible which tells us the complete story about Jesus and how he was the Messiah, and how he brought he brought salvation for everyone.

Mandy:

You are right Sandy. We do know the complete story. We know that Isaiah’s prophesies and the hopes of the people in the Old Testament were all true, Jesus was the Messiah, the Messiah of the Manger. (thinking) Sandy, do you suppose the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song about the Messiah of the Manger?

Sandy:

Good idea, let’s try, are you ready boys and girls?

Yes Mandy, yes he was. And throughout the centuries the people never gave up hope that some day the Messiah would come.

Mandy:

I guess that’s our hope too, isn’t it, that some day Jesus will come back to earth, just as he said he would do.

Sandy:

Yes, and because we have God’s word in the Bible, we know that someday we will see him, and will spend eternity with him in heaven! (looks at watch) Mandy, look at the time! It’s time for us to leave. Bye kids! See you next time!

Segment 15: The Hope in the Resurrected Messiah Isaiah telling the people of the hope in the Messiah Sandy and Mandy enter, Mandy is very excited Sandy:

I have never seen you so excited Mandy! What happened?

Mandy:

Oh it is so great! My uncle and aunt, Don and Marie, came to visit. They are missionaries in Indonesia, we had been expecting them to be home last month when that awful tsunami happened in Asia.

Sandy:

That must have been very scary!

Mandy:

Yes, it was. They were right in that area where so many people were killed. When we got in touch with the missionary office in Indonesia we were told that Don and Marie were missing.

Sandy:

Oh Mandy, I am so sorry!

Mandy:

Thanks Sandy. We didn’t hear from them in three weeks then last week we had a phone call telling us they were safe and were trying to get a flight back home. And last night they arrived.

Sandy:

Wow, you must have been very worried!

Mandy:

Yes we were. It was especially hard on my mom. When we didn’t hear anything from them we started to think we would never see them again. But we all just kept hoping and praying, and God brought them home safely. It was almost like they had come back from death.

Sandy:

What a time you have had!

Mandy:

Yes, from excitement when we were expecting them to come home, to total despair when we thought they were dead, to unbelievable joy now that we have them home, safe and sound.

Sandy:

You know Mandy, that almost sounds like what Jesus’ friends went through in Jerusalem!

Mandy:

How do you mean?

Sandy:

His disciples were excited about being in Jerusalem, celebrating the Passover. But then when Jesus was arrested, tried and crucified on a cross, their whole lives came crashing down. But then there was the resurrection!

I can see what you mean Sandy! They would be excited!

Sandy:

Actually today we are going to talk about that with the boys and girls.

Mandy:

Wonderful! But first we really do need to talk to God. (Name of leader), would you talk to God for us?

the theme of the session is our hope in Christ so the prayer should have this basis Mandy:

Thanks, (name of leader). Now Sandy, can we sing our special song, and can all the children sing along please?

Sandy:

Sure can, I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to play that song, and lets all sing along, OK? I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

Oh Sandy, did you hear the song talked about strengthening and keeping us? That’s what my family and I were praying for while we were waiting for new about Don and Marie.

I am sure you were. And I expect that’s what Jesus’ disciples were doing back at the time of the crucifixion as well.

Mandy:

You know, last time the B.I.B.L.E. Machine helped us get in touch with someone from the time of Jesus’ birth. I wonder, do you suppose . . . .

actor comes on stage, walking slowly, looking at the ground, shaking head, mumbling to self. Mimes almost bumping into someone, annoyed. actor keeps up conversation with this unseen person

actor, annoyed: Will you watch where you are going? There is enough road for all of us, choose your own part please! (looks offstage at unseen person, thinking, as though asked a question) I? Who am I? What does it matter? You would not know my name, I am simply one of the disciples of the Nazarene, the one we used to call the Messiah. (uncomfortable, looks around, fearfully) That is to say, I once was a disciple, a lesser follower, I simply met some of that group and I tagged along, and I . . . . You, . . you aren’t a . . . Roman are you, by any chance? (relieved, smiles a little) Good, well, can’t be too careful now, the way things have gone the last few days! I will have to get used to being less open about my relationship to the Followers of the Way. (looks offstage) What do you mean, what has happened in the last few days? Where have you been man? Jerusalem is upside down, very unsafe at the moment for those of us who . . . are you sure you are not a Roman? Very well then, but surely you must have been living in a trance to be unaware of the happenings of the last three days. See all of us, Followers of the Way, disciples of the Nazarene, Jesus, the one we called the Christ, the Messiah, all of us came to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The Passover, a happy event, all of us in great spirits . . . . Well, the master did make us less exuberant with his constant predictions that he was going to be handed over . . . “to be crucified” as he put it. How could we know that was exactly what would happen? Judas, the traitor, made a filthy deal with the synagogue leaders to have him arrested, tried and convicted. And so it was that on Friday that he was . . . killed! (listens to unseen companion) Of course he was dead! I saw him with my own eyes, on the cross and in the tomb! (listens to unseen companion) Where am I going? What does it matter? I gave up all I had to be with him. I have nothing left to live on, or to live for, for that matter. (listens to unseen companion) How is he supposed to come back to life? Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 101

Dead is . . dead! You sound like the foolish women this morning, nonsense about the tomb being empty, foolish talk that he had risen! Empty foolish talk! I know what I saw, he was dead I tell you! (listens to unseen companion) Of course he raised Lazarus from the dead. But that was different, he isn’t here to raise himself from the dead. Truth is, I wonder if I really saw Lazarus raised, . . I am not sure of anything anymore! I mean, what am I supposed to believe? How am I to keep my emotions straight? My mind is full of every emotion known to man, from the heights of triumph to the depths of despair! From the pinnacle of joyful camaraderie as one of the disciples, to the pits of bleak isolation as everyone, from Peter on down, has ran and hid! And now, more than ever, I need to think clearly. (listens to unseen companion) Yes, I am fully aware of the prophesies of our father Isaiah, that the Messiah was to be God’s chosen instrument of the House of David, the redeemer of our people, the suffering servant. But . . . did he have to die? (listens to unseen companion) What do you mean do I not know you? I have never seen you before in my life! How could I . . For a moment there, just the way you smiled, the gentle look in your eyes, you looked just like . . . I am loosing my senses! You are some lonely traveller on this Emmaus road, same as myself and though you remind me of . . . (listens to unseen companion) What do you mean, was I not listening when you spoke of rising again . . Rising . . Wait! It can’t be, can it, is it, could it possibly be . . . Oh Master, it is you, isn’t it? Master, come let me touch you, hold you, . . . . Master . . . . (listens to unseen companion) Yes, Master, anything you say, anything, I will go tell the others, I will . . Master, it is you, isn’t it? Yes, I know you now. Know you as I have never known you before. Master, if you must go, please hurry back, please . . . (listens to unseen companion) Yes, yes, I will tell them, I will find them, I will . . . Thank you Master, thank you for confronting my unbelieving heart! (actor mimes watching as companion leaves, waves goodbye) He is risen indeed! Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Did you hear what I said? (louder) He is risen indeed! Thank you prophets of old, thank you foretelling of the Messiah! Thank you Isaiah who said, “Salvation will reach the ends of the earth and his glory will be shown to all people. to bring justice to all the nations, a light to the nations that all will turn to the Lord!” Oh yes, the good news! He is risen. Risen indeed! He truly is the Messiah! The Messiah of the Resurrection! actor leaves the stage area Mandy:

Wasn’t that something boys and girls? Just like my family, the disciples were so excited about spending the Passover holiday with Jesus. But when he was arrested and crucified they thought all was lost.

Sandy:

Can you imagine how excited they were when he came back from the grave, back to them?

Mandy:

Well I sure can imagine it, kind of like when my family were found safe in Indonesia, and they came home to us!

Sandy:

I can see that Mandy. It is Easter, what an exciting season, what a wonderful time to think about Jesus and all he has done for us!

Mandy:

Isaiah’s prophesies and the hopes of the people in the Old Testament were all true, Jesus was the Messiah, the Messiah of the Manger, and the Messiah of the Resurrection. (thinking) Sandy, do you suppose the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song that would be right for now?

Well, yes, God is definitely a special friend, but we also have special friends on earth as well.

Mandy:

Wouldn’t it be awesome if they were to bring their friends here to see us next time?

Sandy:

I think that would be super great! After all, that’s what friends are for! And speaking of friends who told others about Jesus, that is our Bible lesson for today.

Mandy:

You mean, friends from the Bible like David and Jonathan?

Sandy:

Well David and Jonathan were friends back in the Old Testament, but today we are going to learn about a friendship in the New Testament. Paul was travelling throughout the country, telling all the people about Jesus. Along the way God provided a man by the name of Silas as a helper to Paul.

Well I want to tell you, you came to the right place, asked the right person is what! I was there, from the beginning, I saw it all. Oh, forgive me, my name is Martha. (Matthew if male) I was a disciple . . still am, far as that’s concerned. You will have to forgive me, sometimes I think we live too much in the past. I was a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, the Messiah. (looks out into audience as though being asked a question) Yes, yes, he was crucified some time back, in Jerusalem, at the time of the Passover. (again looks into audience as though fielding a question) Why would I still be hanging around after the Messiah was crucified? Where have you been? You mean you haven’t heard the news, the news of the resurrection? Or might it be that you have heard and have chosen to not believe? See, that’s the reason we are here, to explain to folks like you the pure facts, as I saw them with my own eyes. (looks into audience, pauses) Yes, of course I was there at the crucifixion. I watched him die. (shakes head in disbelief) Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 108

You truly are a disbeliever aren’t you? Related to Thomas by chance? (laughs, holds up hand) Sorry, an inside joke. But fact is that, yes, I did see him die. And I was destroyed, I felt as though there was no more meaning to life. Ah, but then, three days later! He rose from the dead! Yes I did see him with my own eyes! And I have hundreds of witnesses. (looks out, frowns, shakes head) Be sceptical if you wish, but the resurrection is still a fact! And I want to tell you, as a first hand observer to all that was going on, if you heard the facts, you would be a believer too! Anyhow, that brings me to what you asked about. . . . . Paul and Silas. See, after the resurrection, all us disciples, we were instructed by Jesus to go to the furthest ends of the earth, telling everyone who would listen, the good news of Jesus and his salvation. Of course there were many who did not believe. One in particular, Saul of Tarsus, tried to stop us at every turn. But even Saul came to understand and believe in the message of Jesus, to the point where Saul, who changed his name to Saul, became one of us. Soon Paul was travelling all around the country, telling people about Jesus. At one time or another many people came to help Paul in preaching the word of God. But one of these was very, very special, and he became a special friend and co-worker with Paul. How did they become friends you ask? Were they alike? No, actually, in most ways Paul and Silas were very different. Paul was loud and aggressive, Silas quiet and calm. Paul was a small man, Silas a mountain of a man. But there were similarities as well. Obvious things, like both were Roman citizens. Much more important, they shared a deep and abiding belief in Jesus Christ and his purpose to bring salvation to all people. And both men were passionate about bringing this news to all people. So it was that they travelled many miles together, brining people to a knowledge of salvation through Christ. And so it is that we must choose our friends, based on similar beliefs, a sharing of the same values. Although Paul and Silas went through some very difficult situations they had their friendship, and each other as support, and their common faith in God kept them focused through many trying times. Ever heard the saying, “Of one mind?” That’s how it was with Paul and Silas, and that’s how it needs to be with

us when we choose our friends. ”Of one mind!” actor leaves the stage area Mandy:

Wasn’t that something boys and girls? It is very important how we choose our friends.

Sandy:

Exactly Mandy! The right friends sure can help us when times are tough. But the wrong friends can take us to places and situations we really should not go.

Mandy:

Yes Mandy, very concerned indeed! God wants us to be friends to everyone, but for the very special, close friendships, God wants those who will be a good influence on us.

Mandy:

I know what I am going to do when I am choosing my close friends! I am going to think, “I wonder if this is the kind of person God would want as my close friend?”

Sandy:

Sounds like an excellent plan to me Mandy!

Mandy:

But the good thing is, I already have a closest, closest friend! That’s you, Sandy! And now I know it is time for us to leave. Think I can help you walk out on that sore ankle?

Sandy:

It is really feeling much better, but I would appreciate if I could just lean on you a bit Mandy. I am glad we can be best friends! Bye boys and girls.

Mandy:

Bye kids! See you next time!

Segment 17: When Things Really Fall Apart Paul and Silas in jail, the earthquake Sandy and Mandy enter, Mandy is talking animatedly Mandy:

I have got to tell you, Sandy, I do not believe that any time in my whole life have I been that frightened!

Sandy:

That is awful Mandy! What did you do?

Mandy:

Well, luckily I wasn’t alone. Me and my mom were together, so it wasn’t like I was all alone or anything. And there were two or three others there as well.

Sandy:

What happened?

Mandy:

Well we were downtown at the new mall and we were going up to the second level.

Sandy:

On the escalator?

Mandy:

No, the elevator. Anyhow, all of a sudden there was this big bump and the elevator seemed to fall and then stop dead in it’s tracks.

Sandy:

Oh no! That would be scary! So what did you do?

Mandy:

Well, first thing my mom prayed, and that kinda settled us down so we could at least think straight. The others on the elevator, they had been screaming, yelling, they seemed to be a lot more calm too after mom prayed.

Sandy:

Then what happened?

Mandy:

Well, then mom used the phone, called mall maintenance, they said they were working on it, that we just had to wait a little.

Sandy:

Wow! That waiting would be really hard!

Mandy:

Yes it was Sandy, especially for this one lady who is claustrophobic.

Sandy:

I have heard of people like that, afraid of small spaces. Couldn’t be much worse than in a little elevator!

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 112

Mandy:

My mom asked all of us to hold hands and pray together. Funny thing you know, even the lady who was claustrophobic settle down really well. Next thing we know the elevator starts moving and the door opens.

Sandy:

That was some excitement!

Mandy:

Even more, some proof of how God calms us when we pray to him, even in the most scary situations.

Sandy:

Wonderful example! And now it’s time for all of us to pray. (Name of leader), would you talk to God for us?

the theme of the session is on praying to God in all situations so the prayer should have this basis Mandy:

Thanks, (name of leader). Now Sandy, can we sing our special song, and can all the children sing along please?

Sandy:

Sure can, I will ask the B.I.B.L.E. Machine to play that song, and lets all sing along, OK? I will just type the information into the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, and the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can also show the words up here on the screen.

Guide me until Working for others Your work to do Me an example My Saviour, of you. Mandy:

Oh Sandy, that song is such a beautiful prayer.

Sandy:

Isn’t it so great to know that God always wants to talk with us, no matter when, no matter what is the subject?

Mandy:

It amazes me how God, who is father of all that exists, cares enough about me to listen whenever I call to him.

Sandy:

Boys and girls, what kind of things do you talk to God about?

encourage the children to discuss times and situations when they might have a special prayer to God. Try to guide them to realize that while God is with them and interested in the big, scary situations, God is also there during the happy times, or the very minor happenings in life. Show how we need to learn to call on God at all times, and make this both a habit and a priority in our everyday lives. Mandy:

Wow! So we can talk to God at any time and for any reason, can’t we?

Sandy:

Right now we are learning about Paul and his friend Silas, and some of their adventures as they travelled around, telling people about Jesus. I remember reading something in the Bible about how they were thrown in jail, and there was this huge earthquake.

Mandy:

Earthquake? Now that would be some scary!

Sandy:

Suppose that the B.I.B.L.E. Machine can get in touch with someone from the time of the Paul and Silas, someone who was there during the earthquake? Let’s give it a try!

Mandy:

Who will be our volunteer today?

choose a volunteer, either boy or girl Mandy:

(call child by first name). I know s/he will do a great job!

Sandy:

Yes, (child), would you help us get the B.I.B.L.E., Bringing Incredibly Bold Learning Experiences program started? (takes child to the B.I.B.L.E. machine) See that keypad there? Would you punch in the secret code please?

Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 114

(opens the B.I.B.L.E. machine) Now then, today the keywords are . . . crucifixion, resurrection. Let’s see if I just type some directions here . . . (types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) There, there, I believe we’ve got it. Let me punch in some information . . .(types on keyboard, lights flash, computer noises) Paul . . . . Silas . . earthquake . . . prison . . There, we go, now then . .hmmmmm . . . If I hit “enter” Now then, I hope this works!

actor, (male or female) comes out from behind the B.I.B.L.E. Machine, likely dressed in traditional costume Scared to Life actor, asking question: You want to talk about scared? I was simply beside myself, I was so scared! And that is saying something, I mean I am the warden, in charge of a large prison near Philippi, in Macedonia. With that kind of job, I tell you, I run into a lot of scary situations, scary people. I mean there are people in that prison who have done some awful things, and I work with them, trying to make them into good citizens. So sometimes I am in situations which most people would consider very scary indeed. But I want to tell you, all the fear I had ever known was nothing compared to the night when . . . . Listen, why don’t I start at the beginning? Makes sense, right? See we had some travellers from Jerusalem some to Philippi. A couple of men from Jerusalem I think, talking some kind of new religion, sounded like. Me, I have no time for yet another religion, who needs it I always say. Anyhow, on the Sabbath these two guys, Paul and Silas were their names, they went out the city gates, out to the river. A bunch of our women folk were out at the river, washing clothing, and Paul and Silas they got to talking with the ladies. One of the ladies, Lydia , a rich trader from Thyatira, she decided she wanted to be baptized. Apparently that is what they do when a person decides to grab hold of this particular religion. Anyhow, this got everyone around town to talking about these two foreigners and their strange new religion. Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 115

Personally, way I feel is so long as they don’t cause trouble, don’t go over the line, what harm is there. So me and most other folks in town, we just kinda ignored them. That is until a few days later, when the two strangers were walking through town with a buncha their friends, minding their own business, along comes this slave girl fortune teller. I gotta tell you this young lady is not what you would call real sound of mind, know what I mean? But thing is, she was popular with guys who wanted their fortunes told. Don’t ask me is her fortune-telling on the up and up, never did try her myself. All I know is this slave girl she made a ton of money for the guys who owned her. Slave girl she was making some kind of a nuisance of herself, running after Paul, yelling things at him like, “these guys are servants of the most high God, telling people that they must be saved.” Personally I felt sorry for Paul and his friends, you could see Paul tried to ignore her, hoping she would just go away, leave him alone. But the more he ignored her, the louder and more of a pest she became. Finally seemed like he just snapped, yelled out at her, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” Well just like right now she was a changed person, no more yelling and screaming, and that was a good thing. Only problem, when the spirit left her body there was no more fortune telling either. And the guys who owned this slave, they saw the writing on the wall: no more fortune telling, no more money coming in! And they did see red! They and their friends grabbed Paul and Silas, dragged them off to the authorities and the judges, making claims about what Paul and Silas were doing. Way those guys told the story you would swear Paul and Silas were out to take over the town. But, sure enough, there was enough people around looking for excitement, soon the whole town was up in arms, wanting Paul and Silas to pay for, well, whatever it was they had supposedly done. So the judges, they gave in to the mob, told the police to have them stripped and beaten. Then they brought the two to my jail, and severely warned me that Paul and Silas were to be guarded very carefully. Truth is, I couldn’t quite figure out what all the fuss was about, those two looked no more dangerous than my gardener. I mean they were smiling, laughing, singing hymns and praying to this God of theirs. No matter, one thing I have learned over the years, don’t try to second guess the politicians, just do like they say, let it go at that. So I made a big show of putting the two of them in the inner cell, where, to break out they would have to also break through all the other cells. And just for good measure I fastened their feet in stocks! Hey, that should hole these vicious criminals, I thought with a smile. I want to tell you, that was some night! Here’s Paul and Silas, all night long, praying, singing hymns! Not one prisoner there wasn’t dead serious, listening to these two. I want to tell you, some of the toughest old birds on Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

death row, they were standing there, tears pouring down their faces, giving their lives to this new God. And you haven’t heard the strangest part. Along about midnight, Paul and Silas still praying away, all of a sudden there is this rumbling, shaking, it’s an earthquake! Dust everywhere, every last one of the prison doors off their hinges and on the ground. Chains holding the prisoners fell to the ground. When I see all that has happened I know just that all these prisoners will have escaped. And I know what that means to me, as the one in charge. I am not about to have some tribunal decide my death penalty so I pull out my sword, about to take my own life when this guy Paul he yells out, “We are all here, no reason for you to harm yourself!” And when I checked I found it was true! Not one prisoner missing! Not so much as one! It was easy to tell this was no normal happening. I didn’t have all the details, and likely couldn’t have understood even if I had. But this much I knew: all this was because of this God that Paul and Silas were praying to. And I also knew that I had to have this God, both for me and for my family. So it was that night all of my family were baptised and we started to learn more about this wonderful God who loved us so much he sent his own son to die for my sins. And I learned how to talk and pray with him. See, it wasn’t just the prisoners who were set free that night. I was set free. Free from my sins. Free to live a life of joy and peace. actor starts to walk away, turns back Have you got this peace and joy? It is free for you too. actor leaves the stage area Mandy:

The power of prayer! Wow!

Sandy:

Exactly Mandy! It is amazing what prayer did in that prison long ago. But it is even more wonderful that prayer still works today.

Mandy:

(thinking) Sandy, do you suppose the B.I.B.L.E. Machine might have a song that would tell us about prayers?

Sandy:

I am sure it will have, are you ready boys and girls?

Segment 18: What I Am, Not What I Was Highlights of Paul’s life before and after his conversion Sandy and Mandy enter, Mandy is carrying a photo album Mandy:

I have got to tell you, Sandy, some of these pictures sure are embarrassing!

Sandy:

I think you look very cute in your baby pictures.

Mandy:

But I was so . . . young!

Sandy:

Most children are.

Mandy:

Seems like they dressed me so . . . cutesy!

Sandy:

Baby clothes are meant to make babies look cute.

Mandy:

I guess, but I can just imagine someone finding these pictures and making smart comments about how I used to look.

Sandy:

I don’t think you have too much to worry about. I guess we all think about what we were like, what we used to do, say. But seems to me you have nothing to be ashamed of.

Mandy:

I guess you are right. I can’t imagine what it must be like for a person who feels like they have something from their past to hide, or to be ashamed of.

Sandy:

Did you know that’s what we are going to talk about in Sunday School today?

Mandy:

Really? Who do we know who had something to be ashamed about?

Sandy:

Well actually Paul was ashamed of what he had been, but even more he was proud of what God had made of his life.

Mandy:

I am excited about hearing more about Paul. Let’s get started, OK, but first I think maybe I will go hide my pictures.

Sandy:

I mean we are talking major massive changes here! Changed so much that even his name was changed! Paul, he started out Saul, from over in Tarsus. And Saul, of well-to-do parents, taught as a rabbi by no less than Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 122

Gamaliel, a young man of fiery disposition and firm opinions. Nowhere were Saul’s opinions more firm than where it came to the people known as “The Way”, followers of the recently crucified prophet of Nazareth, Jesus Christ. In Paul’s mind there was no room for discussion where the Way were concerned. What they were doing was wrong and needed to be stopped, whatever the cost. Or whatever the pain. Early on there was a young man, Stephen, who spoke long and loud of Jesus, calling him the long-awaited Messiah. You should have seen the veins pop out on Saul’s forehead, so upset was he with such blasphemy! And when Stephen became the first martyr it was Saul who was there, lending his approval. So severe was Saul’s hatred for these Christians, as they became known, he would even go door to door, dragging sympathizers off to prison. So it was that Saul journeyed to Damascus, to hunt down and arrest followers of the Way. And I, as a friend, went with Saul. But before we reached Damascus something wild happened. There was this bright light from the heavens which flashed around us, knocking Saul to the ground. And a voice said, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” The voice claimed to be that of Jesus, he who had been crucified. But this couldn’t be, because Jesus was dead! And if he wasn’t dead then it meant that . . . all of the things being said by the followers of the Way were . . true. And we were . . . wrong. When the light had gone, and Saul stood up, we found that Saul was blind. So I took Saul’s hand in mine, and like a child I led him into Damascus. What was this all about? The voice had said that Saul would be told . . . “what he must do”. For three days Saul saw not so much as a shred of light. Then on the third day a man named Ananias came to visit, telling us that he had a visit from the spirit of Jesus, and that he was to lay hands on Saul, in order that Saul might receive his sight. And immediately as Ananias laid hands on Saul, his sight returned. From Christian fighter to Christ believer was a very quick turnaround for Saul. Although some Christians were afraid of Saul, he soon proved that he was a true follower. Later Barnabas convinced Saul, or Paul as he was now known, to assist in teaching the people at Antioch. From that point on it was one amazing assignment after another. Delivering aid from the church in Jerusalem to the new churches around the area. Teaching and preaching wherever God led Paul. Settling disagreements among the many factions and interest groups within the new church. There were many divisions which developed: Jew versus newly converted Adventures of Sandy Sunday© ©Copyright DramaShare® 2004

Page 123

Gentile. Rabbinically trained Jew versus those who converted from other faiths. But more incredible than were the situations in which Paul found himself was the sudden and immediate change within Paul. He who would have walked a hundred miles to eliminate a Jesus sympathizer now literally walked thousands of miles to bring the good news of the Jesus who offered salvation to all, Jew and Gentile alike. He who would have stamped out the name of Jesus now saw as his life’s calling the need to bring that life-changing name to the lips of every man, woman and child in the world. It has been said that a change in a man happens seldom, and slowly. Those who believe that to be true do not know my friend Paul. When confronted with the reality of Christ and his message, Paul had no second thoughts, no looking back. From that day when face down on the road to Damascus, Paul made a complete, permanent and irreversible turnaround. Total makeovers are possible. Total commitments do happen. The possibility and the lead-time for makeover are much more dependant on the cause than the person involved. No one could have been more steadfast than Saul in his pursuit of the elimination of Christianity. But Saul’s enemy was Paul’s saviour. And the outcome was really never in question. actor leaves the stage area Mandy:

From Saul to Paul.

Sandy:

Amazing what God can do in a life. Even a life dedicated to working against the will of God.
