Curriculum Melissa ISD gifted and talented programs are designed to enhance and expand the gifted learner. Gifted learners have distinct needs. The gifted student learns in a variety of ways that are different from their peers. They take in information at a faster pace. They examine information in depth. They show insight into the whole picture or in the specific details. Finally, they have interest in multiple areas, often similar to adults or older students. Gifted learners often show attitudes and traits such as autonomy, nonconformity, leadership, and creative imagination. The curriculum is supported by a commitment to fill the individual and group needs of gifted and talented students as well as progressive alignment with the student’s varied learning stages. The students are serviced in a variety of ways: individually, with other students, with other gifted students, and through related services. The curriculum of these services involve depth and complexity, critical thinking, individualization, interest grouping, challenging instruction, opportunities to explore leadership skills, and advanced activities, and is differentiated for their individual needs.

Program Assessment The Melissa ISD gifted program has an on-going assessment system. This multifaceted process provides the students and community with a consistently effective and productive gifted education program. The curriculum is assessed through the year as the gifted coordinator works with teachers to assist in updating resources, curriculum, reviews, and student evaluations. There is the opportunity for teachers and staff to give input into the program’s evaluation. The program assessment involves an annual review of the year’s accomplishments, including student’s outcome and performances, as well as overall progress of the program as it adheres to district goals and accommodations to the needs of our students.

Professional Development Melissa ISD believes in updating teacher performances though professional development so that each teacher can achieve at his/her highest level in the classroom. Gifted training will be offered in certification or as gifted updates throughout the year, so that we may reach the district goal of 100% of the teachers gifted certified. There will be seminars and workshops in specific content areas and interests available to Melissa ISD teachers through Region 10 Educational Service Center. The professional library located in the Melissa Elementary library lists several gifted books and other publications for teachers’ use.

Family and Community Involvement One of the most important components in our gifted and talented program is the parents and community members. It is through their effort and interest that we can achieve beyond our own goals and imagination. When we work together, the students have the best chance to succeed.
