Expert Invest AB Manages Resources Expertly with Domino for Linux

About Expert Invest AB Expert Invest AB (www.expert.se) is a retailer of photo and consumer electronics with 209 stores throughout Sweden. Expert Invest AB is a part of the Expert Global International chain that serves customers in 22 countries with over 7,400 stores focused on consumer electronics, household appliances, personal communication, photo equipment and furniture.

Providing internal technical support and keeping track of equipment is a cost of doing business for a company like Expert Invest AB, the Swedish photo and electronics chain of more than two hundred retail stores. Today, Expert Photo is getting these tasks done efficiently and cost-effectively using INVID Help Desk software running on Lotus® Domino™ for Linux.

Managing inventory and handling support calls Just before Christmas in 2000, Expert started using the latest version of INVID Help Desk on a Domino for Linux server specially tuned by Cendio Systems, a Linux system integrator and Lotus Business Partner. All employees now access the system using a Web browser as their client. Expert administrator Andre Genkel says, “We’re using the application in the main office to do inventory on all our computers, our hardware and software. We can go into the database and find out what applications each user has on his or her machine, IP addresses, system specifications, which machines need to upgraded.” Genkel says having so much information easily accessible is helping Expert to better manage their resources. Expert uses the same software and its Domino workflow applications for its call center. “When end users call us with problems, we put the calls in our call center database,” Genkel says. Each call is logged, a message is sent to the user, and calls are tracked until resolved.

Anders Johansson of INVID says the latest version of INVID Help Desk is Web-friendly and works with a browser client. As the IT staff at Expert use the system more and more, they will be populating its knowledge base. Soon, they will be able to quickly search for known solutions using the advanced search engine.

Installing INVID Help Desk on Domino for Linux Cendio Systems and Expert were the first to deploy INVID Help Desk on a Linux server. Zoran Pucar, the Cendio account executive, recalls, “We installed a Linux system that is specially optimized for use with Domino on an IBM xSeries 240 server. We call it our Domino for Linux Business Server. It’s the ideal platform for this particular Domino solution.” INVID’s Help Desk application software — originally developed on Microsoft’s Windows NT — did not need to be modified for Linux. It just installed normally and ran. Now, INVID’s Johansson says, “We know that it works well and recommend Domino running on the Linux platform to new customers. We tell them it’s not only NT.”

Managing without special Linux expertise Although there is very little Linux expertise at Expert, the Help Desk, there have been no problems. “A few people here know a little bit about Unix, but nobody is a specialist on Linux,” says Genkel. “The server just runs and takes care of itself. Most of the time we don’t even know we’re running the database on a Linux server.”
