8th Grade Exploratory FACS Syllabus Welcome to Exploratory FACS on- line! This course is designed to let you, the student, experience a Career and Technical Education course that explores various areas in the Family and Consumer Science field. This syllabus will provide the following information: communication, class room materials, class policies and the grading procedures.

This class will give you the opportunity to explore and learn about careers, your interest areas, real world situations, wellness and nutrition, roles within a family and interpersonal relationships all on-line. In an on-line class you have responsibility for your own learning and I will support you in your learning process. Here are some ways to make this a positive experience:  Because this course is on-line, it is important for you to ask questions whenever you need to. If your question concerns your grade or your progress in the class, you should call or e-mail me. If your question is about how to do an assignment, please ask the entire class by using the discussion board. If you know the answer to a question that is on the discussion board, please post an answer so we can all learn.  Even though this is an on-line class, we will have opportunities to work in groups and do activities. Your class information will be posted on Blackboard Learn (http:courses.k12.sd.us). We will use the Blackboard email and discussion boards to ask and answer questions and to hold discussions. The Content section will be where your lessons, discussions and assignments will be located. All assignments are due in a timely manner, with all assignments due at the end of the 9 weeks.  It is important for you to do your own work on the assignments, projects and discussions. It is also important for you and the other students at your site to be able to figure things out together and learn with each other. If you’re not sure about how to do something, ask classmates. If they aren’t sure either, post a question to the discussion board. Work togetherbut do your own work.  You can contact me at the e-mail address above, through the Blackboard e-mail option. I read my e-mail every day and will usually reply to your email within 24 hours.  I can be reached by telephone at the number and times listed above. You or your parent/guardian can also ask me to schedule a meeting with them if you should need extra help. Remember your class room facilitator is also there to help.

 I am interested in hearing your constructive comments and questions and in helping you to learn the course material. Course Goals CE 1.1 Classify potential careers in the Human Services and Hospitality and Tourism Career Clusters. C 1.1 Interpret the knowledge and skills associated within each career cluster. C 1.2 Recognize the influences of social, economic, and technological changes within career Choices. HD 2.1 Compare the different roles within a family. NW2.2 Apply dietary guidelines in menu planning. R 4.1 Explain similarities and differences within interpersonal relationships.

Textbooks and Instructional Materials The book by Chad Foster “Teenagers Preparing for the Real World” is the only hands-on book you will need for this class. A variety of on-line resources will be used in the class. ** Be sure to start a folder on your computer hard drive to help in organizing your electronic work. Always check directions and rubrics for assignments and projects before submitting them so that they are complete and you receive all the points you deserve.

Class Policies and Procedures  Attendance and Class Time: A special time slot has been allotted to students in this class to be working on the class in the same room at the same time , so that you can help each other. It is important for you to work on this class during the assigned time. It is easy to fall behind and very difficult to catch up once you’re behind. Don’t let yourself get behind by not asking for help with questions you may have. Remember all correspondence through Blackboard is recorded and can be checked at a later time. I will have a record of whether or not you submitted an assignment, or what was said in an email.  Student Behavior: To successfully complete this course, you need to be working during your class time. Your facilitator will handle any discipline issues according to your school’s discipline policy. All assignments and projects must contain content that is appropriate for a k-12 classroom. Assignments or projects containing inappropriate material will not be accepted and may result in a 0 or, in extreme cases, removal from the course.  Assignments & Projects: You must do your own assignments and projects. It is also important to remember that using other people’s ideas, works, pictures, or any other content is illegal. In order to be successful in an online class, you need to turn work in promptly and consistently. For online classes use the due dates found on your Blackboard calendar. Status reports will be sent to your facilitator each reporting period and at the end of the quarter.

**Remember you are responsible for your learning in online classes more than in any other classroom situation! If you are behind, working on the material outside of the class period is encouraged.

Grades Your assignments are graded based on the maximum number of points possible. The number of points allowed for each assignment are shown near the top of each assignment. I’ll divide the number of points that you earn by the number of points possible to determine your percentage. The percentage that you earn determines your course grade based on the grading scale at your school.
