Southeastern Center for Industrial Energy Intensity Reduction

• The Mississippi Development Authority – Energy Division, along with its project partners, has recently established the Southeastern Center for Industrial Energy Intensity Reduction • The primary purpose of the center is to inform industrial facilities about the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program’s goals of reducing industrial energy intensity in the Southeastern region as well as to provide companies with assessments, energy management training, and implementation services • The Center’s overall objective is to collaboratively achieve a 7.5% overall reduction in industrial energy intensity in the Southeastern region over the next three years.

OUTLINE – Project Overview – Who We Are/What We Do – Objectives – Center Website – Services – Contacts

• Project Overview: – The Southeastern Center for Industrial Energy Intensity Reduction focuses its efforts on nine states which include: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee – The Center attempts to create partnerships between DOE, state and local governments, academia, end users, utilities, and NGOs – In order to achieve its goals, the Center focuses on marketing, outreach, education, project identification and implementation, and recognition of end users who have achieved a significant impact

• Project Overview: – The Center has worked to form an industrial advisory board (IAB), which consists of organizations that have an interest in providing guidance to the development of the project objectives – The IAB consists of state energy offices, utility providers, NGOs, and industrial manufacturers – The Center participates in regional and state level conferences and also works with the IAB to develop workshops and trade shows

• Project Overview: – The Center has developed a website which serves as a resource for information sharing, best practices, case studies, etc. – The Center publishes a quarterly newsletter which focuses on ITP technologies, state and federal policy incentives, and successful projects – Through case studies as well as the DOE Industrial Energy Savings Program, the Center will strive to openly recognize projects which result in significant energy reductions

• Who We Are/What We Do: – The Southeastern Center for Industrial Energy Intensity Reduction was established by the Mississippi Development Authority – Energy Division – MDA – Energy chose to partner with the North Carolina Solar Center at North Carolina State University, the Micro-CHP and Biofuels Center in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Mississippi State University, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Florida

• Who We Are/What We Do: – The Center provides no cost energy assessments which result in reports detailing the potential for energy reduction – These reports are similar to those prepared by the DOE Industrial Assessment Centers but are not subject to the same stipulations – The Center also sponsors a number of DOE ITP Qualified Specialist training sessions

• Objectives: – Over the three year period of the project, the Center will make every effort to achieve the following project requirements • Provide Qualified Specialist training sessions for up to 360 students • Provide Short Course and Distance Learning training for up to 150 students each • Perform 27 Save Energy Now energy assessments • Perform 30 Industrial Assessment Center style energy audits • Perform 30 level I energy assessments • Perform 9 level II energy assessments

• Objectives: – The potential annual energy reduction impact associated with the previously listed objectives is estimated to be 65.76 TBTU – The amount of these energy reduction recommendations that actually get implemented is estimated to be 40.72 TBTU by the end of the Center’s third year of operation – All energy savings recommendations, implemented or not, will be tracked and logged by the Center

• Center Website: – The Center’s website can be found at the following link: www.secieir.org – The website contains information regarding upcoming training sessions, workshops, and conferences that are relevant to the Center’s focuses – The website will also contain a database of case studies of previous projects

• Center Services: – Key services offered by the Center are as follows: • IAC style energy audits for industrial and commercial facilities as well as municipalities • Level I energy assessments • Level II energy assessments • Assessment follow-up interviews • Technical assistance • Training, workshops, trade shows, etc.

• Center Services: – Industrial Assessment Center style audits: • The Center has the capability to perform energy audits similar to those conducted by the regional DOE Industrial Assessment Centers • Since the IACs have a number of guidelines and requirements that the facility must fulfill before they conduct an audit, many non-manufacturing facilities are excluded from an IAC audit • The Center offers the same service as the IAC to these types of facilities

• Center Services: – Level I Energy Assessments: • Based on the ASHRAE definition, a level I energy audit includes a preliminary energy use analysis, an on-site visit, and a report detailing low-cost/no-cost measures and potential capital improvements for further study • The Southeastern Center for Industrial Energy Intensity Reduction offers this service to any commercial or industrial facility as well as municipalities within the Southeast

• Center Services: – Level II Energy Assessments: • Based on the ASHRAE definition, a level II energy audit includes a preliminary energy use analysis as well as a level I audit, but also includes more detailed energy calculations and financial analysis of the proposed energy efficiency measures • The Southeastern Center for Industrial Energy Intensity Reduction offers this service to any commercial or industrial facility as well as municipalities within the Southeast as well

• Center Services: – In addition to performing level I and level II audits for facilities, the Center also aides these facilities with technical assistance before or after the report is completed or during project implementation – The Center performs follow-up interviews with facilities where projects were recommended at given time intervals – The Center also routinely conducts training sessions and sponsors workshops and trade shows in an effort to provide technical knowledge and encourage information sharing for representatives from facilities where the Center has been involved with energy efficiency projects
