Location Asks, “Where is it?” Two Types of location: Absolute Location: refers to the exact location on the earth’s surface as measured by latitude and longitude. Every location on the earth can be found this way. Relative Location: is less precise. It helps you orient yourself to a location that is relative to something else.

Place The idea of place includes more than just where something is located. It includes those features and characteristics that give an area its own identity or personality. Physical characteristics: such as landforms, weather, plants, and animals. Human characteristics: language, religion, architecture, music, and politics.

Human/Environment Interaction Focuses on how people respond to and alter their environment. To live comfortably or even to survive in many parts of the world, people must make changes in the environment or adapt to conditions they cannot change, or both.

Movement The movement of people and things between places means that events in other places can have an impact on you personally. Transportation routes, communication systems, trade connections link people and places to the world. The movement of people is very important because it can spread ideas and cultural characteristics from one place to another.

Region A region is an area that is unified by one feature or a mix of features. These features can be: Language, landscape, religion, location, occupation of people, or a legal definition such as “county”.

Because we cannot learn in detail the geography of every place, a region is used to generalize about parts of the earth’s surface in either human or physical terms.
