OOI Review March 9-10, 2015
Review of the Development Process • Concept of Operations (CONOPS) – Describes how system should function at a high level
• Use Cases – Flows from CONOPS, describes how users interact with system
• Requirements Development – Derived from Use Cases and CONOPS; list of “Shalls” that describe the functionality of the system
• Software Development – Implementation of requirements into software
• Software Testing – Verification that the software performs as specified by requirements
• Validation – Validation that the system performs a desired by the user, and provides valid output data products

uFrame OOI • uFrame CI focused on: – – – –
Leveraging existing Raytheon uFrame SOA technology Improved User Interface Simplified hardware and network architecture Collocated Data Management organization
• Incremental Build Schedule – Allows for identification and resolution of integration issues – Permits feedback into later builds
• Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) – OOINet Build schedule is linked with new SEMP, which defines commissioning plan, specific deliverables, and is represented in schedule 3

uFrame OOI Architecture
OOI Review March 9-10, 2015
uFrame OOI Architecture Notes • Plug-in Development – The uFrame team is developing or extending plug-ins to meet some of OOI CI capabilities. – Other capabilities will be implemented via hardware or network infrastructure and via graphical user interface development by other OOI CI development teams.
• Database – Postgress database implemented to hold metadata about ingested data files and to hold the information about the physical assets that collect the data.
• Streaming Ingest – Data ingest performed using Cassandra engine. Cassandra provides for better performance than original (PyPies) technology, and includes support for clustering (allowing scalability), and replication. 5
OOI Review March 9-10, 2015
Data Ingestion Processing • Data Streams ingested via Sensor Integration extension • Python parsers used to parse incoming data – L0 Data stored within Cassandra – Meta data stored within Postgress • Profilers & Profilers and Moorings Moorings – Input through Java Messages to Apache Qpid queue
Sensors 1 Sensors 2 Sensors 1:n
Data Stream 1 Data Stream 2 Data Streams 1:n
• Streaming Data – Instrument Agent driver translates data stream into a Qpid queue 6

Algorithm Processing • Data arriving via streams is converted to usable data products through application of algorithms which apply calibration constants, perform quality control functions, and merge data from co-located sensors to generate data products •
•
Input Data streams (L0) from Mooring/ Node/ Sensors are transformed to output Product Derived (L1 & L2) via algorithms Algorithms require that calibration information be stored and managed (as calibration data may change over time

Information Lifecycle Management in OOI • Solution integrates two paradigms – Disk-based: Enterprise SAN • Deduplication – reduces data footprint • Redundancy – maintains data integrity • Management – increases administrative leverage
– Tape-based: Robotic Library • Acts as “Last Tier” of SAN hierarchy • Delivers no-power, no-cooling, long-life storage target • Suitable for backup, disaster recovery, data transport
• Data distribution (replication) – East Coast CI (Rutgers): main site/access point – West Coast CI (currently Pittock): mirror, data locality
• Highly available, 24/7-4hrs response support

Instrument data is stored in Cassandra DB. Metadata is stored in a Postgress DB
CI Deployment Plan Phase 1 – Minimal CI hardware (Current status) – Essential compute, storage, networking, software to support construction, testing, commissioning – Leveraging existing capabilities – End-to-end high-bandwidth network connection operational – Ramping up personnel – 5 positions on interviews
Phase 2 – Immediate O&M CI (Target*: 03/31) – Functional compute, software; intermediate storage solution – Expect to hire 3-4 systems/software personnel – Need to address reliability, quality of service
Phase 3 – Commissioning O&M CI (Target*: 05/31) – – – –
Full compute, software; redundant/reliable storage with backup solution; Full datacenter capability; west coast re-deployed and operational OOINet in production Security solution deployed * Contingent on funding 40
OOI Review March 9-10, 2015
Other CI Issues • Long-term data archival – Working with NODC
• Federated CI identity management – Leverage existing XSEDE/NCSA infrastructure
• Security audits – Working with Center for Trustworthy Scientific Cyberinfrastructure (CTSC) – http://trustedci.org
• Monitoring capabilities – Performance, availability and communications pathways
• CI evaluation – Quality of service (exclusive of scheduled downtime) – Network bandwidth utilization (e.g., prioritize non-user facing functionality when bandwidth utilization reaches >85%)
