Why Coach Netball?

From our Coaching Convenor Beth Atkin.... Coaching is probably one of the best decisions I have made. It not only gives you an opportunity to teach and develop the players individually but helps them learn team skills and bond as a group in the sport they love. It’s so rewarding to see so many smiles and achievements made throughout the netball season even the little one like ‘not stepping for an entire quarter’ Woo! That’s so exciting for that player and it’s because of YOU and your continual guidance and training. You may have said 10 000 times to plant those feet and finally one day it happens! Now I understand that everyone is so busy these days but let’s think about it. Coaching does not need to be an elaborate piece of work - more importantly it should be kept simple and back to basics. Your training session plan can be scribbled on a piece of paper while eating lunch. It doesn’t take much, just 5-10 minutes. There are plenty of other coaches who you can ask questions and I am here to help you too plus there are so many good resources online you can use! The training session - well that’s just one hour once a week - on a day that is convenient for you :) The Saturday game - you would be there any way to watch your child play right? If this still seems way to much then grab a friend to help you coach and split the load. Co-coaching can be very rewarding as you can bounce around ideas, share and cover each other for training/games.

Coaching ... it’s totally worth it!

Coaching At GPCCNC: All of our GPCCNC Coaches are volunteers. The majority are parents of players, some are players themselves and others are parents of past players. Coaching is a rewarding and challenging activity and we are greatly appreciate all the time our coaches commit to training, skill development, team building and getting the players on the court each week. Coaches do NOT need previous experience in netball or coaching to take on the role. GPCCNC Coaches are supported throughout the season by the Coach Convenor, Beth Atkin. Beth will check in with coaches throughout the season to see how they are going, offer advice and assist with planning and skills. As a club we have a wealth of knowledge and experience within our Committee and coaching team. We provide all of our coaches with resources (paper and online) to help support them to determine skills sets, plan training sessions and foster a team environment.

Coaches come in all different shapes, sizes, backgrounds,

experience, motivation and approaches to netball - that is the beauty of volunteer coaching in childrens sporting clubs! Is there a coach inside of you just waiting to see some action? Coaches can look different for different teams: one coach, two co-coaches sharing the role, a coach with a trainee coach, a coach supported by an assistant coach - take your pick!

Structure of a Training Session

Training sessions are where players learn the skills they need to be able to play the game. They should be fun and interesting to keep the players engaged. Training sessions need to be aimed at the skill level of the players - not too hard and not too easy. Below is a basic structure for any age training session: QUICK GROUP DISCUSSION (5 mins): this is where you organise the players, have a quick discussion about the most recent game on the weekend and briefly explain what the focus of the training session is going to be based around. This is where you lay the foundation for your team - behaviour expectations, building relationships etc. WARM UP (10 mins): the warm up can be a fun time to mix things up for your team, not always doing the same traditional netball warm ups. The idea of this part of the training session is to warm up our muscles to prevent injuries so it can involve a range of game based activities, a simple jog/run/walk, obstacle course, circuit etc. Anything that gets the players moving! SKILL DEVELOPMENT (30 mins): this is where new skills are introduced and existing skills are practised and progressed. Different basic techniques need to be covered in this section throughout the season - passing and catching, movement, footwork, attacking and defending. There are a myriad of drills that can be used to focus on different and specific skills for individual players, groups of players and the whole team. GAME (10 mins): a game of netball (half or full court) is a fun way to practise skills - giving context to skills learnt. WARM DOWN (5 mins): the warm (cool) down consists of a gentle jog or walk to cool the muscles down and decreases any injuries. This session is also a good opportunity to review the training session and acknowledge players.

Coaching Tips and Tricks

If you have any questions or great ideas about netball coaching please contact Beth our GPCC Coach Convenor

Make things as fun as possible! Coach to the level of your team [email protected] [below will be boring | above too challenging]

Avoid elimination games Include variety each week [keep old favourites as ‘rewards’ or special]

Winning shouldn’t be the only goal of the season. Encourage your players to watch a professional game - there is so much to learn from just watching Chat to other coaches, ask questions and contact the Coaching Convener [Beth is here to help - she’s not scary!]

Over plan rather than under plan! Remember netball should be about the players enjoying the sport!

COME ON!

Get involved with GPCC Netball Club

Have fun with coaching, if you are enjoying it the players will too!

THE BOTTOM LINE - THE BOTTOM LINE - THE BOTTOM LINE

We are a volunteer sporting club like many others on the Central Coast.

All of our positions on the Committee are volunteers and all of our committee members are busy people like yourselves! As a club we need parents to step in and take on coaching roles. If coaching your child is not something that will work for you (we totally get it!) then become a coach of another team. With many other commitments in our lives we need to get smarter about the way we do things, so if you have any brilliant ideas please let us know!
