13 November Nelson, 14 November Dunedin, 15 November Wellington & 16 November 2017 Hamilton- 9.00am - 4.30pm When Tanya Breen was training as a clinical psychologist in the 1980s, she remembers being told that autism was such a rare condition that it was unlikely she would ever work with an autistic person. Now over half of her clinical work is with autistic adults. Given that around one person in 68 is autistic, and that many are undiagnosed adults of average intellectual ability, Tanya believes that all psychologists should be competent and confident to work in autism. That’s what Tanya hopes this workshop will help you become. Psychologists who attend this workshop, which focusses upon autism in adulthood, will: • Develop an understanding of the historical, social and political context of autism in Aotearoa New Zealand, and learn how this knowledge will help them build positive therapeutic relationships with the autistic adults. • Learn how to recognise and differentially diagnose autistic adults. • Be introduced to ‘good autism practices’, used to support autistic adults in everyday life. • Identify strategies that enhance therapy and interventions, and increase the likelihood of meaningful engagement and good progress. • Find out about sources of further information and advice on working with autistic adults.

Tanya Breen Tanya loves being around autistic people. This is fortunate, because many of the clients in her private practice are autistic, and she has autistic friends and family members. Known also for her work on the New Zealand Autism Spectrum Disorder Guideline, Tanya was the clinical consultant for Altogether Autism for eight years, and she has been involved in many autism related projects. Tanya is currently working towards the degree of Doctor of Health Science, and is particularly interested in the experiences that autistic adults have had with Aotearoa New Zealand’s criminal justice system. Tanya lives in Hamilton, with her husband, Trefor and their greyhound, Gibson. Visitors to Tanya’s home and office never fail to notice that she has a strong interest in Dr Who. Isn’t that interesting?
