Meaningful Resolutions John 1:1-4 January 1, 2017 New Years Day

I. So, as I think you all know, during Advent we looked into those things that give our lives meaning. A. I’m going to start off the new year by not reciting again the litany of background information; suffice it to say that—belonging, having a meaningful purpose, having a redemption story and a sense of awe will help to give our lives that meaning. B. It’s also probably important to note that there is a big difference between seeking happiness and seeking meaning in life. C. Those seeking happiness are usually focused on what will bring them pleasure; while those seeking meaning are usually focused on the wellbeing of others and the spiritual state associated with that is not so much happiness as it is JOY.

D. With that said, I’m about done saying anything because what I would like for us to do now is to take that piece of paper you were given and while we listen to Bruce Cockburn sing “The Last Night of the World” write down what you are going to do in the coming year to make your life more meaningful. You may write down more than one. E. And yes, you will be asked to share it.

II. Sharing of Resolutions A. My Resolution Now this probably won’t save the world or anything, but in the coming year I’m going to try to begin teaching Grayson, our grandson, how to play guitar, so that he can enjoy making music and have a pathway into the beauty of God’s creation. B. So how about some of yours.

III. While you may not be able to fulfill your other New Year’s resolutions let us pray that these meaningful resolutions will come to be fulfilled and your lives in the coming year will be filled with the meaning that comes from loving one another. AMEN.
