Witness to Genocide: Syrian Archbishop Speaks in New Haven Melkite Catholic Archbishop Jean-Clément Jeanbart of Aleppo, Syria, spoke on the genocide being waged against his people and the future of Christianity in the Middle East on Sunday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m., during a talk at St. Mary’s Church, 5 Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven, Conn., co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Aleppo, Syria’s largest city, has been shattered by civil war and genocide at the hands of ISIS. In 2013, American aid worker Kayla Mueller was kidnapped by ISIS and killed in their custody. Aleppo’s Syriac Orthodox and Greek Orthodox archbishops were also kidnapped that same year and have not been heard from since. Archbishop Jeanbart was a featured speaker during the States Dinner of the 2015 Supreme Convention in Philadelphia. “We have seen people killed, slaughtered, women violated, priests and bishops kidnapped, houses destroyed, churches and convents invaded,” Archbishop Jeanbart said at the convention. “But we persist with the help of God and with the help of those who help us.” Archbishop Jeanbart also explained that the ancient city of Aleppo, which has been at the center of trade between the East and the West for centuries, has become a disaster zone, where Christians have suffered the worst devastation. “The support of our Christian brothers and sisters in the West is extremely needed. Are they willing to hear our desperate appeal?” St. Mary’s Church is where Father Michael McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882. The Order has since become the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization, with 1.9 million members worldwide. To date, the Order has raised more than $8 million to provide housing, food, medical aid, education and general relief to persecuted Christians and other religious minorities through its Christian Refugee Relief Fund. 4th Degree News The picture on page 4 is of SK’s John Ashburn, Cody Stoltenburg, and Kevin Berkel. Cody is the one in the middle and recently became a 4th degree at the Exemplification held in Macon last month. It is great to see him step up to this degree. Cody is very involved in our council and will be in the assembly. I’d still like to see more of our 3rd degree Knights take the next step, and join the Patriotic Arm of the order. With the increasing age and decreasing health of many of our SK, let’s see if there are any other 3 rd degree knights up to the privilege of wearing the regalia and representing the Knights patriotic arm of the order. If any brother has a question about the 4th Degree or would like an application, please contact SK Kevin Berkel (Color Corps Commander) at 241-7251 or any officer in the assembly. Some upcoming events: May 21 2016 – Consecration of St. Anthony of Padua (Ray City) / 10:00 AM Mass – show time is 9:30 AM at the new church. We need a good showing of Sir Knights for Bishop Hartmeyer. We will be working with SK from Warner Robins, GA. If there is enough response we will plan a car pool. May 23, 2016 – St. Anthony of Padua Confirmation (Ray City) / 6:00 PM Mass – show time is 5:30 PM at the church. May 24, 2016 – St. John the Evangelist Confirmation (Valdosta) /6:00 PM Mass – show time is 5:30 PM at the church. May 31, 2016 – Memorial Day Service (Andersonville) / 11:00 AM Mass – show time is 10:30 AM at the rostrum. Please continue to pray for the sick and recovering Sir Knight (SK) members of our assembly from the Valdosta, Thomasville, Douglas, Tifton and Waycross councils.

Mary Stewart’s Prayer Keep us, O God, from all pettiness. Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. let us be done with fault-finding and leave off all self-seeking. May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face, without self pity and without prejudice. may we never be hasty in judgment, and always be generous. let us always take time for all things, and make us to grow calm, serene and gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses, to be straightforward and unafraid. Grant that we may realize that it is the little things of life that create differences, that in the big things of life, we are as one. And, O Lord God, let us not forget to be kind! Amen.
