Praying for East Timor Anna Webster leaves today for East Timor. She is on a mission trip from 7th – 14th Feb. Anna has been involved for several years with a small group in NZ that has been supporting the work of YWAM (Youth With A Mission) in a village in East Timor. Their current project is to build a community centre in the village. They also run a child sponsorship programme for village children to enable them to go to school. Anna writes, “Prayer is needed for the community centre project as there have been frustrating legal issues for far too long. We have the money & the land, but there need to be signatures on papers for the centre to be built!” Let us pray for Anna and for the project in East Timor

Waitangi Day Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th Feb 1840 in Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. The Treaty is regarded as New Zealand’s founding document. It declared New Zealand part of the British Empire but also guaranteed the Maori people rights to their land & gave them the rights of British subjects. Due to mistrust of the British, had it not been for the respect the Maori had for CMS missionary Henry Williams & his son Edward, who helped translate & explain the treaty, very few Maori would have been willing to sign. About 40 chiefs signed on the first day & by September 1840 another 500 chiefs around the country had signed. Maori have generally seen the Treaty as a sacred pact, while for many years Pākehā (the Māori word for New Zealanders of European ancestry) ignored it. In modern New Zealand, the Treaty while not binding in law does outline principles of mutual respect & cooperation that our parliament recognizes as binding.

CHURCH NEWS

PRAYER ITEMS GIVE THANKS FOR:

Chinese New Year We had a wonderful Chinese New Year Celebration on Friday evening – with great fellowship, food, music, praise dance (Hawaii-style), testimonies & baptisms. To God be the glory!

March Baptisms

I am very grateful to our elder Warren for once again preaching for us. It has made it possible for me to work ahead a little & also get some of our sorting & packing done as we get ready to welcome Ps Abri & the Bracken family next month.

We plan another baptism on the 27th of March, Easter Sunday. All those considering baptism, please talk to Peter, Elizabeth or Wendy Liu.

Today Warren will share with us the challenge of what it means to be a Christian. He will point out that a Christian is a disciple or follower of Jesus – and this involves staying close to Jesus, obeying all His instructions, & following His will for our lives. Following Jesus in our secular society can be a real challenge, but it is incredibly exciting & worthwhile. It is the only way to true happiness & fulfillment in this life and also leads to eternal blessings.
