UNOFFICIAL MINUTES Board of Education Muscatine Community School District April 27, 2015 The Board of Education of the Muscatine Community School District, in the County of Muscatine, State of Iowa, met in regular session on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Administration Center. President Nathan Mather called the meeting to order. Directors Tim Bower, Brenda Garcia, Tom Johanns, Randy Naber and Mary Wildermuth were present. Director Tammi Drawbaugh was absent. Also present were Superintendent Jerry Riibe and Director of Finance Jean Garner. The board recited the Pledge of Allegiance. President Mather welcomed media representatives and visitors. Lory Aguero, 2611 Steeple Lane, shared her concern about the district not replacing the two elementary counselor positions for the 2015-‐16 school year that were vacated due to retirements. A motion was made by Director Bower and seconded by Director Naber to approve the consent agenda to include the following: the minutes of the April 13, 2015 regular meeting; the bills and claims against the district dated April 27, 2015; the student teaching agreement with the University of Northern Iowa; and the following employment recommendations: The certified resignations of: Cody Charles – MHS Math and Shannon Bean – kindergarten at Washington. The schedule C resignations of: Cody Charles – MHS assistant baseball, Wendy Robinson-‐Koch – middle school drama, Tom Wilson – MHS assistant football, Andy Prinsen – MHS assistant wrestling, Ann Edkin – MHS assistant girls basketball, John Robinson – middle school musical, John Jindrich – MHS assistant girls basketball, and Taylor Fountain – MHS robotics. The 2015-‐16 certified new hires of: Marinda Gacke – CMS Science, Jonna Hall – MHS Social Studies, Jason Stolzfus – MHS Social Studies, and Jordan Walgren – CMS Math. All ayes; motion carried. Superintendent Riibe shared with the board a possible modification to the approved 2015-‐16 calendar with a start date of August 26. He noted that even with this start date, first semester would not be able to end prior to the holiday break in December. He recommended to keep the start date of August 31st. The board agreed with Superintendent Riibe’s recommendation. No action was needed since the board did not wish to modify the already approved calendar. A motion was made by Director Bower and seconded by Director Johanns to approve the use of Hometown Plumbing & Heating’s Engineering Design Services for the evaluation and replacement of the heating water boiler for West Middle School in the amount of $15,600. All ayes; motion carried. A motion was made by Director Bower and seconded by Director Wildermuth to approve the School Fees for 2015-‐16 School Year as presented with no increase to the general fees and transportation fees. (Food Service fees were not part of this action item.) The motion passed with five ayes and one nay (Director Johanns voted nay).
A motion was made by Director Wildermuth and seconded by Director Naber to accept and place on file the Audit Report for fiscal year 2014. All ayes; motion carried. Superintendent Riibe provided the board with information on the summer feeding program. Last year the district lost $5,000 primarily because of a lack of participation noting that between breakfast and lunch the district served 500 meals per day between 9 sites. He noted that there are local community organizations that have expressed an interest in helping to cover any losses for this summer’s feeding program. The board recommended that the district continue discussions with the local groups. President Mather provided the following announcements of future meetings and events: April 29, 2015 – 2 hour early dismissal for teacher professional development May 11, 2015 – Regular Board Meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall May 17, 2015 – Excellence in Education Scholarship Program at 2 p.m. at MHS May 24, 2015 – Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2015 at 2 p.m. at MHS Gymnasium A motion was made by Director Naber and seconded by Director Wildermuth to adjourn the meeting.
