Rethinking Relationships: A strengths- based approach to responsiveness to Māori

A WORKSHOP FOR SOCIAL SERVICE WORKERS, MANAGERS AND BOARD MEMBERS Friday 1 August 2014 9.00 am – 3.00 pm (lunch provided) Anglican Action Conference Room, Te Ara Hou Village, 100 Morrinsville Rd, Hamilton In this full-day workshop, you will learn from new Waitangi Tribunal evidence about Māori intentions for the Treaty relationship (Ngāpuhi Nui Tonu WAI 1040). These learnings can assist organisations to respond in strengths-based ways to the expectations and aspirations of Māori. An organisation’s responsiveness to Māori, from governance through to operations, is now a requirement of government contracts and many community funders. The impact will be an alternative conceptual framework to assist in your approach to funding applications, strategy, service provision and evaluation of your Treaty-based practice. Bring your current strategy documents and funding applications, etc, with you to look at through a different lens during the workshop. Presented by: Dr Rawiri Waretini-Karena is Waikato Tainui from Ngāti Māhanga, Ngāti Māhuta, as well as Ngāpuhi Nui Tonu. His PhD from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi investigated Transforming Māori experiences of historical intergenerational trauma (2014). He is currently a lecturer at Wintec in the area of Māori Counselling, Social Work and Mental Health. And Dr. Ingrid Huygens, is Pākehā of Dutch ancestry, and a researcher in cultural relations, community psychology and social change. Her PhD from University of Waikato investigated Processes of Pākehā change in response to the Treaty of Waitangi (2007). She is currently national coordinator of Tangata Tiriti – Treaty People, an independent Treaty education programme for students, organisations and new migrant communities.
