Dear Family, The reunion is less than seven months away — Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 4, 2013 in New Orleans. We are hoping that you are planning to join us for a weekend of celebration with the family. As with every reunion, we will be missing family members that we have lost in the past four years. And this year we will be missing a very special person, my uncle Hymie Samuelson. Without Hymie’s love, persistence, and dedication, these reunions probably wouldn’t have happened — and certainly would not have had the level of participation and attendance that they have enjoyed. We are hoping that to honor Hymie’s memory each of you will spend just a little time doing Hymie’s work — reaching out to family members, helping us to contact everyone, updating our family trees, updating our mailing list, doing a page for our reunion book, and attending the reunion. If each of us does a little bit, we can hopefully have a very successful reunion. We have a Samuelson Family Group on Facebook. If you are on Facebook, Please join the group. That will be the easiest way to post information. We also hope to have a simple website ready to use in a month or so. That way anyone with a computer will be able to access the most recent information.

Registration

We want to encourage as many family members as possible to attend the reunion. We will be sending this letter by US Postal Service and by email. If you know of a family member who does not receive the information, please share it with them and give us contact information so we can add them to our lists. Arrangements with hotel catering and other expenses dictate registration fees of $185.00 for adults and $85.00 for children ages 6-12. There will be no charge for children 5 and younger. This will cover the cost of Friday and Saturday dinners, Sunday breakfast, and some other necessary expenses. We will also be hosting a hospitality room that will remain open throughout the weekend. Hotel room reservations will be handled directly with the hotel. We have negotiated a price of $109.00 per night for rooms with two double or kingsize beds. I know that web link is ridiculously long. If you go to the Samuelson Page on Facebook or to the email we send, you can just click on it. We do realize that, while these costs may not present problems to some family members, others may find this less affordable. We do not want any family members to miss the reunion for financial reasons. And so we hope that those who can afford to, will contribute funds above and beyond the registration fee to help with additional expenses and enable us to provide funds for those who need some financial assistance. Funds may be donated to sponsor a particular part of the reunion (the reunion book, T-shirts, mugs, hospitality room) or you may just contribute money to be used as needed. Those of you who need financial assistance, please contact me personally at 504-495-5552 or bshear@shear grafix.com. All requests will be handled in strictest confidence. Again, we want everyone to be able to attend.

The Book

This year we are faced with some challenges regarding the reunion book. In the past, Hymie has always completely covered the cost of printing the book. And this year the rest of the family will have to undertake those costs. Hopefully we will be able to cover some of the costs of printing with our registration fees, but I would encourage anyone who would like to contribute to sponsoring the cost of the book to let me know. This is a very important part of the reunion, as anyone who has participated will tell you. I am determined that we will do the book and I encourage you to begin sending in your pages now. I am hoping to do a softcover book printed in color this time, allowing for better reproduction of photographs or artwork. Please send in your pages as soon as possible to participate in the book. Enclosed Reunion Book Note will give more detail on when and how to submit your pages. The Family Tree Charts and contact lists are important parts of the Reunion Book. These sections need major revisions every four years. There are births, deaths and marriages to be charted, and many people have new addresses and emails. Please send any new information that you know of. You can include changes on your registration form or send them to [email protected] or Dotsy Fisher, 805 Ridgelake Dr., Metairie, LA 70001. If you would like to be a branch updater and take responsibility for updating your grandparents’ descendants that would be greatly appreciated. Just let me know and I will supply our most recent chart for you to update.

The family reunion is really the people who attend. And we want you to participate in any and every way you can. Even if you can’t make it, please do your page for the book.. If you will be able to attend, make your hotel reservations now. They can be canceled before the reunion if need be with no cost to you. But we want to get an idea of who is planning to attend. Fill in the Family Registration Form and send it in with your check. Don’t miss this great opportunity to meet relatives you never knew you had and to see those who you have known and loved for years. As most of us already know, we are all part of a great family.

Reunion Book Notes Individual Pages

The Reunion Book for 2013 present some new challenges, but we are determined to produce an outstanding book to join our earlier volumes. We hope to print in color this time, enabling family members to include color photographs or art to their pages. Each person (of every age) is asked to contribute one single page to be included in the book. Writings, essays, memoirs, drawings, photographs, poetry, puzzles, riddles—or any combination—can be your page. These will be printed exactly as submitted and will appear in the order they are received. We want everyone—even the youngest family members—to participate. Pages are 8.5 x 11”. They can be emailed as a digital file (hi-resolution PDF or JPEG) or you can send a hard copy by mail which will be scanned. Digital files will save time in layout so are preferred. Digital files should be sent to: [email protected] Hard copies should be mailed to: Briann Shear 816 Hickory Ave, 2nd floor New Orleans, LA 70123 All materials need to be received by March 31, 2013 to allow time for indexing, layout, and printing.

Family Tree Pages

The family tree pages show every descendant of Julius and Dora Samuelson. And so the tree grows new leaves every single year. And even though there are leaves that fall and are no longer with us, they keep their place on the branch as the tree widens and reaches new heights. At this time we have reached seven generations. Hymie maintained the tree with great care with the help of our generous and skillful family member, Michael Cullick. This year we ask all members to help us with the updating. If you have your tree page from the 2009 book, please make a copy, add changes on the tree or on the back of the page and mail or email to the above addresses. If you need a copy of your family page email me ([email protected]) or call me at 504-495-5552. Again, we would like to have all updates by March 31, 2013.
