2012 Fall Investigation: Who are You?

Luke 10:25-37 25

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26

“What is written in the Law?” He replied. “How do you read it?”

November 11, 2012 27

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28

“You have answered “Do this and you will live.”

correctly,”

Jesus

replied.

29

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30

“What must I do to inherit eternal life?“ “Who is my neighbor?“ Luke 10:25-37 ________________________________________

In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37

“Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

What Must I Do To Inherit Eternal Life? What Is My Neighbor? Luke 10:25-37 “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “And who is my neighbor?"

The Question In Acts 16, Paul and Silas are asked a question in v. 30 similar to the lawyer’s first question. How do they answer?

The Story What does verse 25 reveal about the lawyer’s motive?

How would you have answered the lawyer? Why do you think Jesus answered as He did in verses 26-28? Why did He not ‘present the gospel’?

How has the lawyer’s attitude changed in verse 29?

How is that situation different from the situation of the lawyer in Luke 10?

Why does the lawyer ask his second question in v. 29?

Application When we are faced with questions from unbelievers, is it important to consider the motive of the questioner?

Jesus tells a story in verses 30-36. What features of the story strike you as most important for His meaning? How may the story of the Good Samaritan apply to us?

How does Jesus apply the story to his interrogator in vv. 36-37?

Dealing with the Door Luke 13:22-30

22

Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as He made His way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked Him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’

“Lord, are only a few going to be saved?"

“There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”
