by Bonnie Chilton, Director of Community Relations and Brooks Parent

Peter Shanahan is a Music Academy faculty member who not only teaches flute, but instructs classes in Stomp percussion after school for Brooks Magnet and Lindley Elementary Schools. If you’re not familiar with Stomp, it is a percussion class made up of drumsticks, pots, pans, paint buckets—just about anything that is noninstrumental—to beat upon. Peter is a North Carolina A+ Teaching Fellow, which makes him an extraordinary teacher for students of all ages. I’ve had the pleasure of watching him in action with Kindergarten through 2nd grade students; he has the patience of Job! I don’t know if you’ve been around a 5year-old lately, but they don’t have a very long attention span and can find all sorts of interesting things to do with drum sticks if left idle for long. Each week Peter manages this class with such precision that not a moment is wasted. In just

four short classes, he has managed to get these eight children to learn four complex rhythms and while transitioning

between each rhythm, they’ve learned to listen intently to his specific stage directions. It’s been a humbling experience to see how he keeps his cool, and maintains a smile all the while, even when an occasional drum stick breaks and pieces fly across the room. Peter is very creative, keeping the class captivating and fun. Ah, but he has an agenda all the while, getting these young drummers ready for a finale—a school talent show in the spring. I’ve also had the privilege of observing

him as he gives Stomp demonstrations to Lessons for Life Tour guests and PTA presidents around the county. It’s always worth a laugh to watch him, stick drumsticks in an unexpecting grownup hand and proceed to tell them how they are going to spend the next ten minutes beating on a paint bucket and stomping around the room. Everyone always enjoys his playful manner and dry humor. Peter, I for one applaud you for your contagious enthusiasm and tireless cooperation. You do an outstanding job with the young and old alike. Thank you for your support of The Music Academy! You never miss a beat!

Concert Introduces Children to Freckles Snoopy. Marmaduke. Scooby-Doo. They’re all canine characters who’ve won our hearts over the years. Now, add another to the list— Freckles, the brainchild of Ellen Bryant Lloyd. The Greensboro author has crafted a series of children’s books based on the lovable character, earning her five awards including a Mom’s Choice Award and Indie Excellence in Publishing Award. “Freckles,” the debut in the series, was published in 2001 through Lloyd’s publishing company, Butterfly Creations. “Freckles and the Great Beach Rescue” followed in 2006.

together they find the strength to rescue baby sea turtles trapped in fishing nets. For the concert, the story was read by a professional reader, accompanied by classical music performed by The Music Academy of North Carolina. The event was part of the 17 Days Festival, sponsored by the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro. The music academy helps students of all ages and abilities to discover, develop, real-

approached Lloyd about the concert. Through the years, the music academy has presented other children’s concerts, but they have typically used existing works written for narrator and piano. “This time, I wanted to bring together faculty who were interested in developing a new work built around a great story that would be meaningful for young children,” Holley says. The theme of the Freckles books –– and the fact that the character is so endearing – – provided the perfect formula, Holley said.

The character is based on a real dog named Freckles, who grew up next to Lloyd in her native Wilmington. “(Freckles) was kind of cute and always mischievous. You always wondered what he was up to,” Lloyd said.

Laura Holley, executive director of the music academy, was familiar with Lloyd’s books, having read them to her own children. In June, she

“I think what has made this relationship so special is Ellen’s love for storytelling combined with her love of music,” Holley said. “In meetings with our faculty, she’s been able to explain the characters and emotions so well that ideas for pairings with classical music flowed from our conversations.” The story further teaches lessons of believing in yourself, recognizing individual strengths and talents and mustering courage when facing challenges. “This has been so exciting Continued on page 3

"It has been a tremendous experience working with MANC on the Freckles and The Great Beach Rescue Children's Concert. The amazing talent of the faculty involved and the commitment to this project has been most impressive. The final result of all their hard work was revealed during the premiere performances on October 7 and 8 as part of the 17 Days and was wonderful in every way. I am excited about continuing my partnership with MANC with the promotion of the Freckles Children's Concert performances at area schools, daycares, and other venues with young children. My hope is that all children in our community will have the opportunity to experience this fantastic concert!"

on so many levels, especially being able to introduce children to classical music and to see a live performance,” Lloyd says. “It will be an experience for them to enjoy classical music in a casual environment and see how music and a story go together.” The production will continue performances at public and private schools throughout Guilford and Forsyth counties. I’m so inspired by working with an amazing group of musicians who have given their time, expertise, and dedication to this project,” Holley said. “We want audiences of all ages to love this story and this music as much as we do.” Contact Caron Myers at [email protected] www.funwithfreckles.com Printed October 6, 2011 ©Greensboro News & Record, All Rights Reserved

Facility Facelift As you have probably noticed walking through The Music Academy lobby, we are undergoing a lot of changes! No, we aren’t colorblind, but we are going through a facelift that has not been a quick procedure, but a slow process. Thank you to the Hillsdale Fund for awarding a $25,000 grant to The Music Academy for much needed improvements and renovation.

Performance Hall

Randolph Community College has decided to take us on as a class project, so they will be presenting their ideas for lighting, paint and overall improvements in early December. Thank you Holly Barker, Interior Design Instructor at Randolph, for making this exciting possibility a reality.

After-School Partnership Programs Interested in the Afterschool Partnership Program at your child’s school? If you are, please pass the information on to Bonnie Chilton, Director of Community Relations. Currently, we are providing voice, violin and Stomp classes each week at Brooks Magnet School. Lindley Elementary just completed a four week Stomp class. Jesse Wharton and Florence Elementary are both interested in setting up classes in the spring. Each after-school course is tailor-made to meet the

needs of the particular school. Classes for elementary school students are generally divided up K-2nd grade and 3rd-5th grade. One course can be as short as 4 weeks, extend to include an entire semester, 12 to 15 weeks, depending on the need. Each class is usually open to all students, both ACES and non-ACES, and is held at the particular school. The class fee is nominal, averaging $10/per student/per class. For example, a 6 week Stomp class, would cost a total of $60. This cost is paid

by each parent interested in registering their child for the classes and class enrollment is securely managed through MANC’s Constant Contact Program. For classes that require an instrument, we offer competitive, short term rental rates. We are very interested in providing this convenient service to middle schools and high schools as well. If you are actively involved in your PTA organization, please let them know we would be willing to give a brief presentation of this program and the benefits it has to offer.

MANC Selected as Heritage Greens’ Vendor of the Year The Music Academy was selected as Heritage Greens’ Vendor of the Year for the lectures and performances we provided as part of their "Celebrate a Century" programming.

Lessons for Life Tours! Spread the Word and Mark Your Calendar Lessons for Life tours are held at MANC every third Thursday of the month from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. We would appreciate you letting folks in your sphere of influence know about these tours and encouraging them to come and enjoy learning more about The Music Academy, while enjoying a live performance and light refreshments. In addition, we also provide what we refer to as a “tour in a box.” If you know of a civic club,

service organization, church group, retirement center, or social club, please consider having The Music Academy come speak at your next meeting. We would love to provide entertainment and some time to share just what The Music Academy is all about. Our intent is not to ask for funding, but to raise the awareness of The Music Academy’s programs.

Allison Willet won an audition with Western Piedmont Symphony and now serves as associate principal second violin. WPS is based in Hickory, NC.
