Conference Information About the Theme: “Hometown SuperHeroes: Compassion in Action”

Every year the Iowa CareGivers Association develops our annual educational conference around a fun theme. The theme is used to enhance the overall conference experience and make learning more enjoyable. This year’s theme blasts us into action with “Hometown SuperHeroes: Compassion in Action.” On August 30 and 31, 2010, the Iowa CareGivers Association will be celebrating you, Iowa’s direct care workers, as our “Hometown SuperHeroes.” Not only do you provide care and supportive services to those who need it, you also do the little things that make a difference in the lives of your clients. You honor the dignity of others as you provide compassion and care. You have qualities of humility and inner strength that provide you with the courage to do this rewarding but emotionally and physically challenging work. You contribute essential services to our communities. And that’s why you are all “Hometown SuperHeroes.” So get your capes, masks, and other superhero gear ready! We’ll see you in August.

Take Time to Participate in the Health Screenings: It’s Time to Take Care of You!

As direct care workers (DCWs), you often put the care needs of others before your own. But, a healthy YOU is vital to the welfare of those who depend upon you. Take this opportunity to participate in the health screenings. The screenings are being offered through a partnership with Des Moines University’s Physician Assistant Program. Screenings that may be offered are bone density (PIXI DEXA), blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood lipids and glucose. Additional resource information on self-exams, diet/exercise, and other important health issues will be available.

NEW! Oral Care Screenings and Education

The Iowa Department of Public Health in partnership with the Iowa Dental Hygienist Association will be providing simple oral care screenings and education on proper oral health care during conference. Oral health kits will also be available to attendees.

SHIIP (Senior Health Insurance Information Program) Counselors Available During Conference “What do you need to know about Medicare and health insurance before you retire?” SHIIP counselors will be available to help you answer this important question.

Conference Session Descriptions contributing to society. Participants will receive a variety of tips for working with individuals with disabilities. Participants will learn techniques for successfully communicating with individuals who experience a wide range of disabilities, examine their own beliefs about the roles individuals with disabilities play in society, and identify at least three ways in which people with disabilities contribute to society.

D3: “I am not gone--I am just lost:” Understanding Alzheimer’s Behavior as their Mode of Communication

Connie Lucas, Program Specialist, Alzheimer’s Association Greater Iowa Chapter

In this program we will examine possible triggers for behavior of people with Alzheimer’s type dementia. If we are to understand how to be a

superhero for people with dementia we must first understand the disease and then understand the person better than the disease.

GENERAL SESSION: It’s All About Me! Care for the “Hometown SuperHero”

The Reverand Christine A. Tinker, Chaplain, Mayflower Community

You spend your life focused on others. This session will focus on you! We will address issues that impact your life every day: 1. Skills for organizing clutter. 2. Strategies for living with less. 3. Tips for destressing. 4. Eco-friendly living. All this and a little humor! Objectives for this program: To encourage caregivers to make self-care a priority, to introduce skills caregivers can adopt and/or adapt to create a balanced lifestyle, and to affirm that health for me is health for the planet and everyone in my “world.”

Direct Care Workers are often referred to as the “unsung heroes” by the Iowans they assist. But at this conference, we’ll be “singing your praises.” The selfless and heroic acts of caring must be celebrated. Superman and Wonder Woman had their sources of superhero power! You need yours. The Direct Care Worker Resource & Outreach Center (The ROC) can be a source of strength, support, and empowerment! C2: The Importance of Oral Health Care

Heather Miller, Public Health Dental Hygienist Oral health is essential for everyone throughout life, and especially those with compromised health. The need to focus on the oral health of seniors is based on reports issued by the US Surgeon General stating that lowincome senior citizens have an 80% higher prevalence of untreated oral disease than any other age group. A longer lifespan means that oral health is just as important in older adults as it is at any other age. In addition to gaining a better understanding on how oral health affects overall health, participants will participate in a visual presentation that demonstrates good oral hygiene techniques.

C3: Supporting Income, Building Assets

Becky Miles Polka, President, Within Reach Consulting Services
