November 2009 Newsletter “The Hope” Has Landed Safely Moran Iron Works, Inc. is very excited to have been awarded the unique contract to extend a Ferry Boat. Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry “The Hope”, will be extended 17 feet, with new engines, shafts, and props, before it returns to service. Currently the boat is 65 feet in length, 20 feet wide, 23 feet tall, and weighs over 60,000 lbs without the engines. Getting the boat to our facility took both parties several days of planning and communicating to lift the boat safely onto land. Using our two largest cranes, our barging facility at the Carmeuse Rogers City, Calcite facility and the high wire corridor,

Moran Iron Works was able to lift the boat out of the water and set it onto our trailer, where we fabricated the cribbing around the boat in order to secure it for the haul from Rogers City to Onaway. The coordination and control of this “blind” lift was performed by our crane operators Dan Shephard and Al Libby, and directed by Shepler’s Crew Chief. Our road crew of escorts John Sherburne and Tim Prow, along with our Semi driver Randy Kramer, hauled the load safely to our facility.

The dual crane lift successful. Loading onto the trailer in preparation for the fabrication of the cribbing to secure the boat for transportation.

It is expected to return to the Great Lakes, sometime around April 2010. See Page 2 for more photo’s.
