Basil and Mary Swatzell (left) and Asmyr Cano (right) were recognized by Sterling Police Chief Roy Breivik who presented community service awards to the recipients on behalf of the Sterling Police Department. The Swatzells were acknowledged for their continued recognition of the department’s officers every year since Sept. 11, 2001. Cano was recognized for helping locate the owner of a missing bag he found. “Their involvement made a real difference in peoples’ lives and the community as a whole and greatly assisted the Sterling Police Department in our mission to protect and serve,” Breivik said. The corpsmembers - young adults aged 16-25, complete conservation and community development projects throughout the eastern Colorado region. Of the 11 youth corps in Colorado, the Range Riders serve the entire eastern part of the state in 16 counties. This summer, the Range Riders will be joining in a cooperative effort with the Governor’s office and the Office of Energy Management and Conservation to provide youth corps teams to service LEAP (Low-income Energy Assistance Program) households to help bring energy costs down. “We will pilot this program in Logan County this summer,” Shea said, “in Sterling and the surrounding area.”
While the program has been underway in Denver, Shea said this is the first time energy crews will be working in a small town setting. The summer crew will start in Sterling, with plans for two counties for fall teams. One of the projects of the energy team will be changing out incandes-
