Newsletter of Green Point Christian College

Welcome …

Mrs Debra Walls | Principal

Galatians 5:22-25 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” The College is blessed by our Board of Directors, our current staff, our new staff, our parents and our students, and all those who support and encourage the work we do here. As I am sure you are aware, we have begun the building program for the TAS Block (Technological and Applied Studies) and the extension to the Science Block. This will eventually see the removal of all demountable buildings from the Secondary College. We will also be looking to refurbish what is currently known as A Block and B Block. This will then lead to updating parking at the College to accommodate parents, staff and students. Likewise, I am sure you are aware that there is much pressure on students today to find God’s voice among the competing voices of our current context – but it is a journey that they need to take – for then they will come into relationship with the God who created the Universe and created them in His own image. The College wants to work together with parents and caregivers to support students in seeking God’s Will for their lives and to share their gifting with each other whether it be academic, sporting, hospitality, thoughtfulness, or the other gifts of the Spirit. All we do at the College, as a community of God’s people, is based on belief in the authority of the Word of God. Unfortunately, many of our young people feel a sense of hopelessness, but at the College, every time I see a student step up to join a Mission team, support Samaritan’s Purse, participate in the 40 Hour Famine, help those who need help or who are less fortunate than they are – they are living out the Gospel and this builds character which gives purpose to who we are. Looking in allows us to explore our gifts and talents, but looking out helps us serve the community we live in and builds our character so that we are a caring and supportive people, mindful of our calling. God intended us for community and the Bible is filled with exemplars of the importance of this experience, for hope thrives in community.

WEEK 1 | TERM 1

A Ministry of Green Point Baptist Church

Wet, Wet, Wet … Yet Sunshine! As showers poured down on our first day back, excited little faces made their way to new rooms, new teachers and a new year of learning. Welcome to the 2015 school year! As we embark on yet another new year of adventure, I ask you to continue your enthusiasm and support for our exceptional school. God’s school actually. GPCC is outstanding because of our outstanding families. Please continue to thank God for all He allows us to enjoy here, and welcome those who are new to our community.

New Staff This year we welcome a few additions to our team: Mrs Bronwyn Frankham, Support Services. Mrs Nicole Petley, Music. Mr William Drover will be teaching Year 5B until June, when Mrs Bourke returns from leave. Mrs Rachel Kastelan will be teaching Year 6M one day per week. Mrs Alison Beveridge will be teaching Year 5L one day per week. Mrs Sarah Brown will be teaching Year 3/4D one day per week. Mrs Lisa Poll will be teaching Year 3P one day per week. We are blessed to have these dedicated staff join us and I encourage you to please take a moment to introduce yourself to someone you have not met.

New Children I am pleased to welcome 19 new students to Years 1-6 of the Junior School. This is a sign of the shared value we have in Christ centred education. We also warmly welcome the new Kindergarten children and their families who will join us from today.

Welcome Year 1: Charles Barnes, Luca Phan, Tyler Reid, Brian Tsang, Reese Vergara; Year 2: Olivia Edwards; Year 3: Carol Soliman; Year 4: Vangelis Barboutis, Charlotte Hughes, Madeline Nelson, Maxim Nikiforov; Year 5: Anyssa Cromer, Benjamin Eccleston, Emileia Vergara; Year 6: Brayth Cromer, Michael Drake, Eden Matterson, Daniel Nelson, Jake Prior.

Meet the Teacher Next Tuesday, 3 February 2015 we will hold a special evening at which time you are invited to meet your child’s new teacher and hear about class routines for 2015. You will also have the opportunity to ask general questions. Given many families have more than one child, times have been staggered as follows: Years 3 and 4: 6:45pm – 7:15pm;

Infants: 7:30pm – 8:10pm;

Years 5 and 6: 8:15pm – 8:55pm

Primary Swimming Carnival We are most privileged to use the Mingara Aquatic Centre for our Carnival which will be held next Friday 6 February 2015. A separate letter will be sent home detailing specific information with reply slips that should be returned to class teachers. Year 2 children who are competitive swimmers are also welcome to participate in this Carnival, otherwise it is best to wait for the Infants Carnival which focuses on fun rather than competition. We have always enjoyed the cheering of parents and grandparents at our carnivals, so please come along and enjoy the atmosphere.

Class teachers will be collecting email addresses again this year, in order to best keep you informed of happenings in the Grade. The College Office also needs current email addresses to communicate with you via the Newsletter and enable you access to the Parent/Teacher interview booking system. Please let us know if you have changed an email address in recent times.

Art Classes will be held on Tuesday afternoons in the Kindergarten Art room at 3:30pm. Please call Jo Francis to enrol on 0466 247 716 or attend the first session next Tuesday and Jo will advise costs and register your child.

Travel Arrangements Providing your child’s daily travel arrangements to your class teacher via email helps to ensure that each afternoon your child arrives home as expected. The College Office keeps a copy of this information and it is used to guide children if they are ever confused. Please provide this detail at or before the Meet the Teacher Evening.

Labelling Please make sure everything your child brings to school or to carnivals is clearly labelled with your child’s name. Sadly, we have a continuous flow of unlabelled items which costs you money.

WEEK 1

Junior School News

Welcome back for the new school year. It is great to see the enthusiasm and energy that has been brought by the students in their return to school. I would like to begin the year with the focus from 1 Corinthians 10:31 which states: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” In all things whether it is small or big, we should do it to glorify God. This includes the way we treat others, the way we wear our uniform, the effort we put into our class work, the respect we show our peers and teachers, whether we put our rubbish in the bin and so much more. This verse provides us with the correct motivation for all of our endeavours in life, big or small. We welcomed a wonderful group of Year 7 students this year. They were filled with nervous anticipation on their first day, but that will soon change as they get to know the running of the Secondary School. They will be loved and cared for and soon realise that they are part of a wonderful learning community at this College.

Coping with things often comes down to attitude. My encouragement to students is to put a 100% effort into everything they do and realise that they count. They count because they affect and set the tone for those around them. Everyone needs to work together to make a successful learning environment. Year 7 students met with their Year 11 Peer Support Leaders. The Peer Support program teaches students a range of skills to deal positively and proactively with life experiences, develop a sense of self-worth and belonging, and encourages taking responsibility for decisions and actions.

WEEK 1

Secondary School News

Year 12 HSC Students These students are going to struggle this year for so many different reasons, so I thought I would include these helpful ideas again at the beginning of this year. Please pray for these students during this year. Practical advice for the whole family: If your child is studying for the HSC, you are probably feeling the stress too. Many parents want to help but do not want to interfere. As well as pre-exam tension, there are other common factors that can make life seem even more challenging for the whole family. Year 12 is often the year when students: • lose interest in school • have no plans for after the HSC • develop an intense relationship with a boyfriend or girlfriend • get their driver’s licence • experiment with legal or illegal drugs • have a part-time job • are a member of a sporting team • develop an eating disorder • suffer from depression. If any of these concerns sound familiar, do not despair. You are not alone - and this will not last forever. How you can help Richard Cracknell, Counsellor and District Guidance Officer at Inverell High School, advises that “the most obvious forms of support parents can offer are the practical, physical things,” and recommends parents: Provide a good place to study that is quiet, comfortable, with good ventilation, good lighting, adequate desk or table space and free from distractions such as TV, noise, a telephone, interesting conversations, little brothers and sisters. • Provide healthy, balanced meals. • Encourage sleep and regular exercise. • Encourage them to avoid late night parties and alcohol consumption.

Less obvious but just important, is giving your child the support they need in the lead up to exams, which can be hard when emotions run high. Tips to remember • Be supportive and encouraging. • Highlight strengths and successes. Encourage your child not to dwell on failures, but to see them as “mistakes”, which can actually be something they can learn and benefit from. • Appreciate your child may be feeling very stressed, even if it is not obvious to you. Many students fear letting their family down, so beware of setting unrealistic expectations. Some worry they cannot do as well as a sibling, or friend. Many Year 12 students are feeling overwhelmed about what lies ahead: leaving home, leaving lifelong friends, the prospect of having to live in a new city. • Understand people under pressure become supersensitive and explosive from time to time. Family members are usually the first targets. Try not to overreact. • Be realistic in your expectations as to where the HSC leads. Not all HSC students will go on to university – but they can still have a wealth of excellent and satisfying career options. If they do not get the HSC marks they need and still really want to go on to tertiary education later, there are many other pathways. Interestingly, the success rate of mature age students is much higher than for those who go straight from school. • Encourage your child to seek help from teachers or the School Counsellor if they are having any difficulty with subjects, study organisation, stress or anxiety about examinations. • Encourage a healthy balance between work and leisure. Sometimes students need a total break from everything for a weekend or so, to recharge their batteries. • Take an interest in what your child is doing, if they will allow you to (some will not). This can include the subjects or topics being studied, how their study timetables and programs have been organised and their leisure pursuits. (Note: “Taking an interest in” does not mean interfering.) • Remember the occasional hug and “I love you” does not go astray, even when they are 18 years old. • Encourage and allow your child to be as independent as you can possibly stand. The more independent your child is in meeting the demands of Year 12, the better prepared they will be to succeed at a tertiary level or in the workforce.
