Making the Transition Back to College after an Extended Break 1. Reacquaint Yourself with LLCC • • • •

Familiarize yourself with the programs, degrees, and certifications offered. Find out what new services or programs, if any, they now offer. Look for other changes that may have occurred on campus in your absence. Take any entrance exams and/or fill out new paperwork required. Update your address and phone number so your contact information is correct. Contact the ITS department to make sure your LLCC e-mail account is active.

2. Have a Clear Goal for Going Back • • • • •

Are you finishing a degree previously started? Do you want to obtain a new degree or certification? Are you looking for additional training or education for your current job? Request a transcript and take inventory of prior college credits. Think about the life and work experience skills you now have and how that affects your new goals.

3. Make an Academic Plan • •

Don’t be afraid to meet with and utilize an Academic Advisor. They are there to help you! Decide which courses to take, checking on pre-requisites and class offerings for each semester.

4. Be Realistic about Your Time Commitment • • •

Have reasonable expectations for yourself as a student so you can succeed. Carefully plan your study time so it consistently works for you-taking into account your work schedule, children, commute time, community activities, etc. Keep a planner for all your commitments! You could use a calendar, smart phone, or online resources to keep you organized and not overwhelmed or overbooked.

5. Seek Support! Ask for Help! • •

Don’t be afraid to ask for help from staff, instructors, academic advisors, counselors and Academic Success Professionals. Everyone wants to support your Success!! If possible, build a support system in your personal life too. Ask family or friends to help and support your recommitment to college.

6. Embrace Your Return! • • • • •

Have a positive attitude! Attend every class session and make an effort. Ask questions and continue to use resources. Keep track of your grades and goals. Continue to think about the future, and make sure you stay on track to accomplish what you set out to do. Be willing to change any old habits from before that hindered your success.
